I agree
I originally justified that Matt was only an elite QB on this Cards team that He has been on for years. I still think that until proven otherwise.
I mean He outperformed both Mannings, Brady and Brees this preseason on this trainwreck of a football team.
I don't know if any other QB in the NFL would have outperformed Matty on this 2010 Cardinal Team? 19-24 QB rating, 7-8/4-6/9-10 in the first 3 games with UFA WR's, a bad oline and negative running game.
All that with a HC limiting his snaps, undermining his leadership and testing him every down to see how he responds to adversity. The other teams blitzed every single down in the preseason and that was the least of Matt's worries. He did nothing wrong to deserve to be cut. except maybe call out Cris Carter for being a turd.
thats pretty elite in my book, like I said I raised his rating to 91 after he was cut for these reasons. Yea this team wouldn't follow him and thats their bad, They gave DD a new contract and followed DD right down the toilet,
Wonder who said that before? hmmm.
the main QB skillsets Matt is elite at 6'5 232lbs. throws on the run right or left, elite but inconsistant with his long touch throws, reading and reacting, accuracy, cool under pressure.
His downfall was the run game, It was not automatic pilot, its a lost art cause we are practicing and playing the pass 70% of the time. We need to practice run plays as long as it takes to become automatic at the fundementals of football, before we ever attempt a forward pass.
tackling instead stripping woyuld be a nice change right about now, or defending a forward pass instead of risking for the INT every play.
Thats on Coach, We are last in rushing attempts and will remain there at this rate. Our Playoff run and the games we actually won in 08, Edge was the engine of this offense. THT is a good role player but declining, but Whiz keeps kissing those frogs as they remain frogs.
That is what my grading system does for me as a fan, shows improvement or decline in individual players, at positional skill sets. it also shows improvement and decline of units or weakness in units and the team overall. draft needs.
for example AW is no longer elite overall as a SS. his coverage skills have eroded, He is still a great man but must adjust his game to his over 30 body. less bulk more repetition training, what He loses in thumping we need in coverage yesterday. He'll still hit like a mule but not a Rhino.
again I'm just a seasoned fan of horrible football teams. not an expert but I know i like to see and not see on a weekly basis from players I fan for.
Leroy Kelly in 1972 up.
These are only my opinions, its the best i get for buying that ticket Monday night and feeling that god awful depression afterwards.
Oh, I don't doubt that. ML is light years better than what we have on the team today. My bone of contention with your evaluation is that ML is an elite QB right now. Maybe he could have grown into that (and maybe he will), but right now he's just not.
That's debatable. Call me a koolaider, but I think that despite the 9ers and the Rams getting better, the shambles of the NFCW is still the easiest place to gain ground in a short amount of time. I think this is fixable in a year or two (at least, relative to the competition in the West).
