The NBA didn't need this. It's not exactly 'NHL-like', but the game is now so far behind the NFL in the eye of the American sports fans, this won't help at all.

Good point....When was the last time this board has so much action on the Suns' page???

Detroit fans are just classless. Non Pacers that wasn't involve in the fight fans were dousing them with beer and pop.

I don't care what fans are doing, the players should never go into the stands. Were the fans out of line.....hell yes and they should have gone to jail (which I'm sure some did). I guess Artest will get the break that he wanted after all and some of his teammates probably will too.

no one took a swing at artest - a ball boy walked up to and Artest cold cocked his ass and then when his buddy was bieing held back - Jermaine O'Neal took a running start and clocked HIS ASS - I hope the Pacers like losing this year - because THERE ARE GONNA BE HUGE SUSPENSIONS - AND WELL WARRANTED.

The Detroit fans are classless, but they did not deserve to be ATTACKED the way they did - that was the most appaling thing I have ever seen in sports. Ron Artest wanted a break - I think he's gonna get a VERY LONG ONE.

I'm in complete agreement with you guys. I think Artest should be suspended for at least 10 games. He should probably also be sued by that and he attacked in the stands. Not that having a beer thrown on you is justification for attacking somebody, but that's not even the guy who threw it. They should think about suspending Jermaine O'Neal for longer. He absolutely sucker punched that fat guy in the Pistons jersey.

The fans were obnoxious, no doubt. It's the Pacers who are to blame for this though. I think it's just terrible that ESPN is trying to justify their actions. Most of what they're saying is that the fans were really bad all game long. So what? You can't attack somebody for that.

Defenseless fan my arse...the guy was attacking Artest, Jackson just came to his rescue...

Fans started this whole thing, it was getting under control until that moron threw the beer.

Mike

I saw both Ron Artest and Jermaine O'Neal punch who I believe was the same guy before he did anything to them. Neither Artest nor Jackson should have been in the stands in the first place.

Artest didn't hit the right guy with the first punch.

Once Rick Mahorn grabs artest off of the guy he was hitting, the person who started it all hits Artest in the head twice.....

This is horrible

I'm just in shock. Part of me wants to be like "DAMN FOOL! DID YOU SEE JERMAINE ONEAL PUNCH SOME WHITE DUDE IN THE FACE!' then that other is like "That was so sad..."

I admit, that was good to watch, but that was pretty scary. That ESPN reporter was scared S**Tless. I heard him at the end of the game talking about it, and his voice was just... scared.

It did make Jermaine, Artest, and other players looks like thugs beating on those guys, but part of me thinks they deserved it. But, that doesn't mean Artest can run into the stands and pick fights.

INSANE!!

Bedlam breaks out in final minute of Pacers victory

Associated Press
Oct. 19, 2004 09:39 PM

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Indiana's Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson charged into the stands and fought with fans in the final minute of their game against the Detroit Pistons on Friday night, forcing an early and ugly end to the Pacers' 97-82 win.

The game was stopped with 45.9 seconds remaining when a pushing and shoving between the teams spilled into the stands after fans began throwing things at the players near the scorer's table.

"It's the ugliest thing I've seen as a coach or player," Pistons coach Larry Brown said.

After several minutes of players fighting with fans in the stands, the Pacers were pelted with beer, ice, and popcorn as they made their way to the locker room in one of the scariest brawls in an NBA game.

The Palace announcer said the game was being stopped and pleaded with fans not to throw things.

It all started when Detroit's Ben Wallace went in for a layup and was fouled hard by Artest.

Wallace wheeled around and pushed Artest in the face. The benches emptied and punches were thrown.

As the players continued shoving each other near center court and coaches tried to restore order, Artest lay on his back on the scorer's table.

Just when it appeared tempers had died down, Artest was struck by a cup thrown from the stands. He jumped up, and charged into the stands, throwing punches as he climbed over seats.

Fans were punching back, and Jackson and another teammate joined Artest in the melee. A Pistons player came running into the crowd.

Detroit's Rasheed Wallace and Indiana's David Harrison were also in or near the stands.

As the crowd roared, drinks and debris showered the court and the Pacers players covered their heads as they hustled through the runway leading to the locker room.

I think the thing that saddens me the most about this, is the fact that there were young kids who probably witnessed this. Maybe some who were really close to the fight. It's a shame, really.

If I were a parent at that game, I would be furious.

One of the player's kids were courtside. ESPN has a shot of a 14 year old boy holding his little brother while he crys to no end.

Quentin Richardson of the Phoenix Suns watched the brawl on television.

``I have never seen a fight like that in a game since I was in high school,'' he said. ``Man, there are going to be some lawsuits. You don't think some of those fans aren't going to want some NBA money?''

Lamar Odom of the Lakers saw it for the first time as he was being interviewed:

``Whoooo. When you see things like that, just think about what it takes for NBA players to go into a crowd,'' Odom said. ``Sometimes fans get kind of out of hand, but it must have taken a lot for NBA players to go into a crowd and start a fight.''

Man, I missed the fight!

10 games my a$$! Anyone involved in that should be dismissed without pay for at least the whole frickin year! The fans should be arrested and banned from attending any NBA game. That was awful. Watched Jim Gray on ESPNNews recount the event and he sounded shook up. Like he was about to cry or something.

Yeah, "I love this game." NOT!

I think the players and the fans involved in this need to be arrested. The NBA is going to have to make an example of the players involved in throwing punches at the fans.
