The NBA announced to its teams this week at its annual pre-draft camp that fines will be imposed on players starting next season for clear cases of "flopping," ESPN.com has learned.

The league office has yet to determine exact fine amounts for offending flops and how fines might escalate for repeat offenders, but in-game arena observers and video reviewers will be instructed to report instances of theatrical flopping for potential punishment as part of postgame reports on officiating and other matters.

I'll be really interested in seeing how the rules are written and then how they are enforced.

In my mind the only way this works is if there are technicals called for repeated instances. Rines aren't going to change behavior unless the money is awfully big.

Hopefully offensive flopping is monitored just as much as defensive flopping. Manu is the worst offensive flopper IMO.

I'd love to see the number of charges go down as a result.. It really ruins a lot of spectacular scoring plays. This could be great for Amare and Shaq.

I disagree. At times, you can't even talk to a ref about a call without getting T'd. I'd say it has marginally worked at very best.

I would argue that has worked.

Not anymore. I saw several instances of players yelling at REF's etc. When they first were enforcing the strict rule, the T's were coming quick. I wish they would go back to the quick T. I was probably in the minority but I loved it when they were doing the quick T's last season.

Then the NBA decided to back off the quick T. Big mistake IMO. It would have cleaned it up. Now players are slowly but surely going back to their old ways. It has started to get bad again.

In terms of the flop rule......Manu better save his lunch money. That guys is going to lead the league in flop fines.

It worked for the first month when they focused on it. Then after that, it was back to normal. Hasn't had any lasting effect. Kobe's notorious for getting a chunk of a ref without repercussion. Then sometimes, a T is called for a pumped fist or a "gtfu" hand gesture.

There's no rhyme or reason or parameters to their calls on that. I fear that the flop rule will be the same poorly worded, difficult to interperet and easy to have heated debates about type of rule.

I disagree. I think fines will be affective, especially if they come out tough in the beginning of the year. Fines have certainly worked in other areas like referee criticism. Just look to Spurs comments after game 4 in regards to the Fisher foul. I do agree with you that there should be more punishment for repeat offenders. Perhaps something like a game suspension after a certain amount of offenses, sort of like the technical foul rules.

Also, it is difficult for refs to see flops in real time. A lot of times they only see the end result of the flop. It keeps the refs from having to make yet another judgment call.
