Just curious.

Let's say Phoenix can only offer Finley the 1 million veteran exception but another team can offer him the full 5 million MLE.

How much more money would Finley net if he signed with the other team?

I'm thinking perhaps only 1.5 million more than the Phoenix offer. Doesn't 2.5 million of the MLE go to Dallas?

Can anyone clarify the difference in money Finley would lose if he signed with Phoenix rather than a team with the 5 million exception?

The difference should be $2 million. No matter what his new contract is, half of it goes to Dallas. So if he signs for $1 million, he really gets $500,000 (additional), and if he signs for $5 million, he really gets $2.5 million.

The San Antonio Express-News reports that the Spurs will aggressively pursue Michael Finley. The long-time Mavs player is expected to be released prior to the midnight amnesty-provision deadline.

i think that half the difference between the minimum that he can get and what he does get is subtracted from what Dallas owes him. for example:

We offer him the vet min:
($1mil-$1mil)/2=$0.....so Finley would get $1mil+$16mil.

Miami offers him the MLE:
($5mil-$1mil)/2=$2mil.....so Finley would get $5mil+$14mil.

i THINK that's how it goes, but i'm not totally sure.

Is there anyway that Phoenix can offer Finley more than the veteran minimum?

I really want Finley in a Phoenix uniform. Is there anything us fans have forgotten?

There must be a way... please. :(

Mainstreet, all Phoenix has left is the vet minimum and whatever is left of the MLE (not much).

Devil - I am pretty sure that is how it works as well.

At least Sarver can make him one of those $10,000 books.

The competition for Finley is likely to be intense and if comes to money, the Suns have no chance. If it comes to joining a team that fits his style, he has connections to, and includes personal friends, then the answer is....

Sorry about the questions?

Could Phoenix just sign Finley to a one year contract?

Phoenix has a good history of taking care of their players in the long run. I know he would lose at least 2 million for that one year.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out if Phoenix could sign Finley to a short term contract with no guarantees and rely upon their reputation to make it right with Finley in the long run.

It seems liked this changed somehow with Danny Manning.

than maybe finley could sell the book sarver makes for him to recoup some of the salary he loses by signing here. if sarver ever makes me one of those books im gonna tell him to p..s off and get a new move.

Lol, yep. Those rules were changes in the last CBA.

In order to go over the salary cap to resign their own player, the player must be on his contract for at least 3 years.

Even then you can't give him more than a certain percentage obove whatever he was making.

If they can pull it off the team is deeper although much more injury prone. Finley would solve my biggest concern floor spacing with good shooters, my next biggest concern how do we get Nash to play under 35+ a game without signing The Cancer.
