than maybe finley could sell the book sarver makes for him to recoup some of the salary he loses by signing here. if sarver ever makes me one of those books im gonna tell him to p..s off and get a new move.

I had this thought about JJ's book.

There's 2 ways to look at it.

  1. "The book, how many players do they think are gonna fall for that."
  2. "Where's my book? Penny got one, Nash got one, JJ got one. The Suns must not have the same level of respect for me?"

Not sure I understand.....

If you sign player A for 3 years starting at $1 million you can't give him a max contract at the end of the 3 years unless you have the cap space. Rookies are different.

MAybe I'm confused but I seem to remember something like this.

Actually, the issue only relates to bird rights. There is nothing to keep the Suns from signing someone and then using their MLE the next year.

maybe we could just give him JJ's

LOL. Use a scissors to cut out the Johnson pictures and put ones of Finley in with a glue stick.

Let's sign him for min for 3 years and give him a 21 mil 3 year deal after that, when KT's is off the book. That'd be 24 mil in total which'd be comparable to the MLE for 5 years, which'd get him about 22mil in total. Fins knows we'd reciprocate like we did to Manning back then. ;) ;)

Yeah then we can trade away him with all of our draft picks in year two of that deal to gain flexability.

Look at this scenario:

1. Go to super team maimi for mucho $$$ and probably ring
2. Go to recent 2003 2005 champion spurs
3. Go to suns for vet min

Which one on that list do you think the most unlikely choice?

We are SCREWED

Is there some "Internet Cantina" out there I don't know about. Please don't drive home.

1. Get $2 mil more (already making nearly 17) and play behind Antoine, Posey, JWill, etc.

2. Get less than Miami can offer and come off the bench behind Manu.

3. Come to Phoenix and step into a hole in the lineup custom made for you. Get paid $17 mill plus 1. Win a championship, be the selfless hero. Play with your best buddy (and the player who knows best how to get you the ball).

Yes, there's a chance he might not come here, but I got to believe Phoenix has the inside track.

Its ALWAYS about the money....I hope I'm wrong but two million dollars is two million dollars...with the NBA just throwing around millions we lose perspective on how much money that really is....I would'nt turn it down...I'm hoping Fins is a better man than me........

no it is not.it is about perspective. with the money finley is going to still be making from dallas the money is less important then other things. when you have more money then you ever will ever use in your current life style then money isnt your main goal. you start looking goals that havent been meet, people you like to work with, and places that might lead you into being happier. personally i think that finley will sign with the suns. for the extra money the heat isnt that good of a place for him to go to. jason william and walker would scare me off.

About 20 teams inquired about Grant, whose waiver allows the Lakers to avoid the luxury tax on his due salaries. He weighed Chicago, Miami, New York and Denver but chose Phoenix, which is expected to sign him Wednesday after he clears waivers.

Grant spurned "much more" lucrative offers to be another veteran Suns banger with defensive and rebounding prowess, like fellow power forward/undersized center Kurt Thomas.

Perhaps Finley could get an "endorsement deal" from Sarver's Bank, eh?

:D

(j/k, I'm fairly certain there are rules against that kind of thing)

Maybe he'll sign with Atlanta for the minimum because he wants to be happy and it's not about the money, it's about respect and if the Suns really respected him they would have saved their midlevel for him in the prayer and hope that he would be waived.

The main point I failed to make in my post was (don't kill me) that joining the spurs or heat will bring him a higher chance of a potential championship ring then joining the suns at this point, ALSO along with more lucrative offers.

Miami has a super lineup, great place to live, money to throw around, and are in the eastern conf and won't run into the spurs until the final round.

OR

Spurs are the champs.

It's just the cold hard truth.

Hopefully he has parts of JJ in him and doesn't want to be the 6th wheel (pretty much) on either the heat or spurs but I am not getting my hopes up on something like that just to be let down. I hope other people do the same and don't completely brush away the points I am trying to make.

My guess is you are not a millionaire...simple economics my friend...as your income goes up, so do your needs (or percieved "needs") I'm not saying that it has'nt happened before and that some one with a boat load of money has never taken less for a better situation...BUT how many more times has it happened that they can "set their family up for life" or "make a decision for my future"...its a business guys and as Marc Stein points out, alot of Finley's money is deferred...while Brian Grant turned down more lucrative offers, who do you think was willing to give them their entire MLE like Fins will get? My guess is nobody...

It has happened before but Miami has a great chance at the title (although i think that team has to many cooks stirring the pot) and they can offer pretty much 4 MILLION DOLLARS MORE A YEAR. and they can sign him to three or four year deal....Now how the heck are the suns going to top that???? You can say all you want about that hes already rich, but the rich dont get that way by turning down 20 million guaranteed.......

I'm not trying to be a pessimist because if we finish this off season with

Bell
KT
Diaw
Grant
Finley
and two first round picks
AND salary cap flexibility...

I will help send JJ off at the airport, send Q a postcard, and laugh as Steven Hunter gets ten minutes a game in a plodding offense...I would be extremely happy if the Suns get Finley, and they have a chance....but you are being a homer if you think its a slam dunk... that is unless you are part of Finley's entourage

they may be able to give him 4 million more but half of that goes back to the mavs. so he only gets 2 million of it and he doesnt get to stick it to cuban as bad.:D

I'd love to have Finley (and his 40% 3point accuracy)...

...but he was making what...$14 mil last year...now he's going to make $5mil from his "annuity payment"...yes he'll still get the entire contract amount, but at the rate of $5mil per year...

...I don't care how much you make...a drop from $14mil to $5 mil...makes money an issue. If he can get the full MLE from Miami (so he'll get $10mil total)...and have a chance at a ring...

I hope Nash is one heck of a salesman.

To clarify once again, if Michael Finley gets the full mid-level exception he will not make $10 million next year. He'll get his $5 million from Dallas + the veteran minimum of $1.1 million + half of the remainder of that mid-level exception which would be about $2 million. That would give him $8.1 million. If he signed with Phoenix for the minimum he would get $6.1 million.

Right, people overlook that.

Also, I think that the 5 million deferred payments don't start right away - it is after a cetain dollar amount. I remember reading a story that had a much more in depth look at the issue than Stein's did. I'll try to find it again.
