Okay I am not sure if anyone can help me with this one but here it goes... From a quick google search I can tell that the problem has happened before but no one has an answer that works for me yet...

I pulled up Firefox as I normally do and I got a pop up box telling me to pick a profile to use. There were two to pick from. My name and then a default one. That part never normally happens as you know. So I picked my name and it said that it does not exist and I need to select another one or make a new one. SO I selected default as it was the only other choice and now I lost all of my bookmarks and saved passwords and such. Such a pain in my arse...

Can anyone help me get it back?

THanks guys...

Are you using 1.0.7 or RC3 1.5?

Is this for a linux machine or windows?

take a look in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile

you may find your bookmarks in there if you did a default install

not a perfect fix, but may help

also 1.5 is out, not a whole lot of visible changes, but some things just seem to work better

This is probably the easiest fix.

yup, it's mostly background fixes - security, functionality, etc.

This happened to me and I did a ctrl-alt-delete and found Firefox running in the background so I ended the program and restarted Firefox with no problems.

Yup, this is the general reason this kind of thing happens. Firefox crashes but you think it closed normally. Since it crashed, it hasn't "released" the profile data. When you start Firefox again, it's actually a NEW instance of the program. Since it sees that the old profile is still locked by the frozen instance of Firefox, it asks you to create a new one, which then becomes the default. Since it's a new, blank profile, it appears as if all your settings are gone.

To the original poster, if you're still having problems, try restarting (which ensures that all possible copies of Firefox are gone from memory). Then, since you want to reenable your original profile, you'll need to access the Firefox profile manager. Try doing Start->Run-> and then type "firefox -profilemanager" in the box. Then, choose the one that says your name, and you should have your original profile back.

I also have a FF problem, when I click on it it simply won't run. Should I go to their website and re-install?

Ironically yesterday I signed on to ASFN and got the same error and now I have my original bookmarks back. Which is nice, but after I put all my old passwords and such into the new profile.

Seems to me like the people working on this stuff should keep working on it before they can take a huge bit out of EI...

Thanks a lot guys I will try the suggestions next time it flares up.
