LAS VEGAS - For all intents and purposes, Derek Fisher will re-join the Lakers.
Fisher and the Lakers have agreed to a three-year contract worth about $13,959,000, league sources said.
However, there will be a holding period before he can sign the contract. Fisher, who was released by the Utah Jazz last week, has to clear waivers first.
It'll take seven days before Fisher can clear waivers, and that won't start until his previous contract of $20,592,600 that he walked away from is amended to zero dollars.
As of Wednesday night, the Jazz had not filed the paperwork with the NBA about Fisher's release. The seven-day countdown to Fisher's being free and able to sign with the Lakers won't start until Utah does.
Another team could pick up Fisher before he clears waivers. But if it does, that team will be on the hook for all of Fisher's $20,592,600 salary.
Fisher's contract with the Lakers will start at $4.3 million, which is less than the mid-level exception for next season at $5.3 million.
But Fisher, who will turn 33 next month, will get 8 percent raises on the next two years of his contract that will pay him $4.644 million during the 2008-09 season and $5.015 million in the final year.
Fisher became available after the Jazz released him from the last three years of a guaranteed contract so that he can concentrate on getting the best care for his 11-month-old daughter, who has cancer in her left eye.
Los Angeles is one the cities that can provide Fisher with the health care he needs for Tatum, who has been diagnosed with retinoblastoma.
The Lakers will hold a news conference today, and Luke Walton will sign a six-year, $30 million contract. Walton's agent announced that deal last week.
Walton and his agent agreed to help the Lakers out as far as the luxury tax is concerned by taking just $4 million in the first year.
That's still a significant raise from the $1,375,000 he earned last season.
Still, if Fisher signs, the Lakers will have committed $67.98 million to 13 players.
That would be slightly over next season's luxury tax threshold of $67.865 million.
Teams that exceed that have to pay a dollar-for-dollar tax. The Lakers could trade a player to get below the tax.
But the Lakers still want to re-sign center Chris Mihm, which could put them in luxury-tax jeopardy again.
Fisher spent the first eight years of his NBA career with the Lakers and was a part of three championship teams (2000-2002).
He was known as a good person in the locker room and in the community and was a close confidant of Kobe Bryant, whose agent, Rob Pelinka, just became Fisher's agent.
Fisher left the Lakers after they lost to the Detroit Pistons in the 2004 NBA Finals. He signed a six-year, $37 million contract with the Golden State Warriors, then was traded to the Jazz last summer.

I hate the Lakers and all, but you know what? Good for him. There's only a few cities that have the hospital his little girl needs, so huzzah for going where he needs to go, even though he loses money.

How do we just release Banks and get rid of his salary? Do we need to convince him that he needs to be released? ;)

That's most of the Lakers' MLE. Fisher is fine, but he's far from an impact player. Unless the Lakers are able to swing the O'Neal trade, it looks like this is pretty much what they'll have next season, and they haven't even come to terms with Walton yet. Bryant must be delighted.

Im usually usually indifferent to this certain thought process, but I keep asking myself

"Too Soon?"

He had the whole offseason to select/sign with another team, why not focus on the daughter even if LA has the best facilities.

I thought that they gave Walton a 6 year 30M deal?

I don't think you're appreciating how terrible the Lakers have been at the point guard position the past few years. Their team is going to run a lot more smoothly and Fisher is going to get more credit than he deserves. When you replace something terrible with something adequate, you tend to over appreciate the adequate replacement.

They'll be a lot better. Phil Jackson is a great coach who had been working with what was essentially a team with three NBA players on it and made them competitive. Now they have four NBA players. That's a huge upgrade.

In other news, Mitch Kupchak got another lucky break to keep him from losing his job.

In other news, Mitch Kupchak sucks.

:). Now can you explain what the heck the Vos is dos quote please?

It was from an online translator of the write-up of a World Championships game, or something. It was originally written in Spanish and someone else from the board fed it through a translator. But the Spanish used some non-standard forms (standard for that region) and the translator didn't recognize them, so the result was this hilarious mish-mash. I keep thinking it's time to change it, but it has worn well.

They've signed Luke already.

Ooops...sorry...didn't read the rest of the thread.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure they swing the JO trade once the KG thing is completely dead with no hopes...the question is what goes out for JO..

Cobe Karl might make the roster if they move out some people in a deal and quite honestly, I'd love to see this kid make it on the Lakers.

Well, if he didn't do it until later in the year, he'd lose even MORE money. He loses a lot of money as it is, but once teams use up their MLE, his chances go south and he has to take a vet deal or something, in most cases. Quick action gets him more money, which is important when taking a paycut.

I love Fish...he's a class act. I hope he does return to LA because mr .4 is an all around good guy.

How can it not include Odom? The numbers just aren't there otherwise. You know that O'Neal makes $19.7 million this season, right?

Kwame, Bynum and filler works. Vlad or cook. They only have to get to 16 mill or so. There are a lot of ways to do it. Kwame makes 9 mil next year. Cook 3.5 mill. Vlad 5.6 mil (though that contract doesn't come off the books for awhile). Kwame and Cook = close to Lamar's 13 mil salary. Farmar makes a mil, and with Crittendon and Fish he is expendable and Indy wants young PGs...there another million. It can be done.

Odom and Bynum is overpaying for JO and doesn't improve the Laker team. LO alone doesn't entice Walsh, as he's hot for Bynum.

Dream on. O'Neal is far too valuable to go out in a pure salary dump. Just Bynum isn't going to get it done, and the Lakers don't have any good picks to offer. Radmanovic has substantial negative value: You probably don't think so because you are a Lakers fan, but he's in the top ten of least attractive trade pieces in the entire league.

So basically you're hoping that the Pacers will take Bynum, cap room, and an assortment of other pieces that are collectively worth less than zero. No chance.

There is a chance for the Lakers to get JO for Bynum and filler, etc. This is the NBA, there is always a chance.

And if that's the case, you just roll on with what you have. Losing Bynum and LO and is far too steep for JO. It comes down to how much Walsh wants Bynum. If he balks, you don't make a trade. The goal is to pair LO and JO with Kobe, not to wash out and maybe break even.

And before its brought up, ef Kobe and what he wants; he's going nowhere.

I actually don't want to lose Vlad...his contract is long, but if his shooting hand is healthy this year (injured preseason) I think he'll be a much improved piece of the team.

The rumor on UCLA boards is that Farmar may now be on the block because they like Crittenton and got Fisher to tutor him.

We'll see it's not like farmar would have much market value in trade by himself he'd have to be in a package.

Fisher was the WORST player I saw on any team during the playoffs.

I am glad the Lakers wasted their money on him instead of someone who can actually play.

it's a move that improves the Lakers, but that ain't saying much. They're still bantha fodder and no matter how much D-Dogg hopes that Donnie Walsh is the biggest idiot in the world, they ain't getting JO for the pile of crap D-dogg thinks will work.
