Eagles are heading into the next year over the cap already. Trading Foles is like $7.0+ million in cap relief. Plus, you can't have the Super Bowl MVP sitting on the bench behind a young, developing franchise QB. That'd really be a nightmare, especially in that town. I think Foles gets traded and I think the Cardinals may be the lead team vying for his services. His contract size is terrific and it buys them time to see if he is the guy or if they want to develop someone behind him.

I almost wonder if he wasn't the top guy on Keim's radar going into the off season and his performance last night just made our GM's job that much harder.

Cap savings is 5.2 million, but again, is it prudent to trade him given that Wentz might not even be ready for Week 1, or worse yet, might not be the guy he was last season? Foles is an excellent insurance policy in this event.

Philadelphia has a lot of ways to manipulate the salary cap. I wouldn't be surprised if Jason Peters retires or is traded. He's old and injured. His backup filled in for him just fine this season. Cutting Torrey Smith outright also provides $5 million of relief with no dead money. They'll be fine.

I don't dispute what you're saying, it's a tough spot for the Eagles. But what is actually winning it all worth vs. potential? It's a rare circumstance but I still value that Foles actually went out and played well in the playoffs and got the ring. The consensus seems to be that Wentz would have done the same or more but I just don't know. The bright lights can affect each player differently.

I hear ya. I'm biased as hell and would love Nick Foles here. I can't remember another team being in even a similar position to what the Eagles are going to be facing this offseason. Foles is a Philly legend forever, but he's not the franchise QB.

Cap issues aside, I'm imagining two scenarios:

1. Wentz isn't ready to start the season. Foles leads the Eagles to 3-0 and looks amazing doing it. Wentz is cleared to play, takes his spot back, and looks rusty as hell. Yikes.

2. Wentz is the starter, Eagles go through a stretch where they lose like three straight games due to bad QB play. The Super Bowl MVP is sitting on the bench. Double yikes.

Philly did give up a lot to move up and get Wentz. This is a gift that fell in their lap, letting them get some of that value back. I think the potential downside outweighs the benefit of having Foles on the roster and the price for Foles will never be higher. They will be extremely tempted to sell, I think, and deal with the PR blowback of trading the most beloved guy in Philly right now.

Actually, I'm not sure which move takes more moxie: trading Foles or keeping him???

'99 Rams? I know Foles didn't do everything that Warner did in the same season but maybe, like Warner, it's just taken Foles this long to find just the right fit? Coincidentally, Foles and Warner were both 28 when they won the SB and SBMVP.

Green probably would have performed much the same as Warner if he'd been healthy in '99 but the guy who actually gets it done, usually keeps the job. "Usually". I think Foles should remain the starter for the Eagles but I don't think he will.

or:

Option 3: Carson Wentz can not live up to Nick's legend in Philly...so they keep Foles and trade away Wentz for a pair of first round picks.

though not "exactly" the same scenario...the Lambs let Trent Green go when Warner exploded on the scene and won SB MVP

It's a delicate PR situation for the iggles... "St. Nick" right now is absolutely the most beloved man in Philly... the situation would get easier if Nick were to come out and publicly demand a trade,... but Nick aint that kinda guy so it isnt likely he even does that as a ruse.

Nick was a pro bowler in 2013 for Philly.... so you have a pro bowl QB who won the big game and super bowl MVP..all with the Iggles...or, a second year player they paid a lot to get who looked really good in the regular season.... Nick had a regular season like that in 2013 and later they still traded him for sam bradford.

when you look at stats... completions, TD% INT% QBR... Foles is similar to cousins... he just does not have as many games... but now Nick has that playoff run and the SB performance in his favor.

I think the Eagles will take a page out of the Vikings playbook, with how they handled Bridgewater. It's been said that Teddy could have come back sooner (this is what he's basing his appeal on), but the Vikings chose to be protective and ride the hot hand of Keenum all season. The Eagles could very will do the same thing with Wentz...they know he's the longterm future, but why risk injury, when you can keep Foles another year, and if Foles fails or gets injured during the season, you can then bring Wentz back in.

According to some people Foles will just regress to the mean and suck again. A couple of us have been called homers for trying to explain (sup TJ) the enigma that is Nick Foles.

Go out and get him. He is perfect for McCoy's system. You hear that? Perfect.

yeah...2014 was a rough season for him before he was traded for Bradford... but he only really sucked for the rams...

think about this...

Nick Foles... best playoff run in history, super bowl MVP

Case Keenum...Pro Bowl season...good playoff run

Jared Goff.... fantastic season and a pro bowl birth.

ya know what these guys all have in common?? They all SUCKED under Jeff Fisher.

if Jeff Fisher ever gets a head coaching job again its a national tragedy

Nate Sudfeld. Seems that Pederson and his staff are very high on this kid. If they like the kid enough and think he's a capable backup quarterback it's gonna be hard not to move Foles.

Foles' perfection in this game was Warner-esque. Offer the #15 pick for him, see if the Eagles will take it.

The similarities between Foles and Warner don't stop at this sort of SB performance. While their stories are not the same, Nick comes from one hell of a family. Nick's dad had to drop out of high school and work to support himself when his parents divorced, and he eventually found his calling int he restaurant business and rose through the ranks At Shoneys (!!!) and I believe ended up with equity in one of the restaurants he worked for and used that money to start Eddie V's which he ended up selling to Darden, which made him a self-made millionaire. A lot of people mistake Nick for some "rich kid" but the truth his that his father rose from poverty to become a self-made millionaire and has kept Nick very grounded.

But the other thing is, Nick is such an even-keeled and likeable guy (he was nicknamed Sunshine at Arizona) that he often gets mistaken for being aloof. Now there are two guys I said were being overlooked and underrated coming out of college that would make good NFL QB's, and those were Kirk Cousins and Nick Foles (the situational irony is great isn't it?). Nick is a gamer. He shows up when it matters. He was joked about at Arizona as being "not a practice payer" but he regularly would calmly do great things in games. I think the egg Arizona laid against Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl really screwed his draft prospects.

Yet here we are, and twice now Nick has defied the odds and been one of the best QBs in the NFL. First, when he made the pro bowl under Chip Kelly (and never should have been moved, Chip Kelly is a moron), and now he just put together two of the best playoff games I have ever seen from a QB. This guy, like Kurt, relishes the underdog role.

Want to know something else interesting? There are two QBs who struggled mightily under Jeff Fisher only to excel once they were unchained from Coach 500. We all know about Case Keenum, but the two guys I am talking about have another connection. I am talking about Nick and Jared Goff, both of whom played under Sonny Dykes.

Because they gave up a lot for Wentz, and he was having an MVP caliber season before he went down. He's the future for that franchise, and if he's healthy, it would be a mistake to put him on the bench and create a controversy. Foles becomes a FA next February if he's still on the Eagles roster. They can choose to keep him as insurance in case their franchise QB is not healthy to start the season, or they can sell high on him and get good value this offseason.
This seems as close to a Rivers/Brees scenario as we’ve seen in awhile.

Foles didn't even totally suck for the Rams. Granted, he fell off a cliff at one point but before the o-line turned to shambles he was actually serviceable. 7TD/4INT and the Rams at 4-3 before the wheels fell off. Led wins against SEA, AZ & SF. Not huge numbers but that was by design with Fisher.

And they all played collegiately in an air raid offense. That's system finally has a Super Bowl championship.

And yes Jeff Fisher sucks.

You've got a lot of good stuff there but my guess is that he was called Sunshine because he was blond like the QB in the movie Remember the Titans, Ronnie "Sunshine" Bass.

He also was going to quit football a couple of years ago. When questioned last night he indicated he had lost his passion to play. A couple of games behind our offensive line could bring back those feelings.:)

Having a shaky o-line is one thing. Playing in a Jeff Fisher "offense" is quite another! ;)

Dude won a SB.

How many QB's we've drafted or acquired have won a SB?

PS - The available Philly QB could turn out to be Wentz.

Can't figure this out either. Foles leads the Eagles to a SB win and he is supposed to come cheap.

If the Cardinals can get him for anything reasonable like a first round pick... do it.
