After watching the game last night and reading all these articles about the mess that is the Orlando Magic, I got to thinking how relieved I am that our ownership/management will never let happen what is going on there. Think about the team we played last night - they have their one superstar and a team who usually picks pretty high in the draft, had a couple lottery picks and another superstar who has basically never played for them who has a max contract - and that team is horrible! They have been over-achieving for years and what's to blame for the most part - what gets the lion-share of attention? Grant Hill's contract - the thing that keeps Orlando from doing anything to be a real player.

Now let's look at ourselves, shall we? We not only have one Grant Hill-like contract, but TWO with Penny and Googs being basically worthless logs of flesh sitting on the bench - but what have we been able to do - draft well, make trades and before two years are up - we will have 3 players worthy of Max contracts and a good cast around them. We oculd so easily be Orlando - especially considering we have two guys making 15 mill a year who combined average 5 points a game - but we don't stop there and let that keep us from being perenial doormats like the Magic have - our scouting is second to none in the league and no matter what it seems like this team is constantly trying to get better - I can only pray for the day that we are done with both Penny and Googs contracts and for the day when this young team has finally jelled to make that championship run - the pieces are fallling into place - every year it seems we add another one - Shawn, then Steph, then Amare and now I think in the future this year's piece will be Zarko - patience guys, patience - and realize that most other GMs, saddled with what BC has been saddled with (by his own accord admittedly) would sit back - like the Blazers are content to do - and wait for those contracts to run out, rather than take risks - like Amare - or Zarko (who if you remember at draft time - everyone but the Suns was down on him). Hell - we even have three guys who can actually be somewhat effective as Centers now! Give BC a break - greatness is coming - but we have to have patience.

It was funny watching the draft piece on the local coverage.

Rex, BC, and the rest, said even before the draft started that they wanted Zarko and Barbosa. Rex made comments after a few of the picks, like the Kirk Heinrich selection (he said it was a reach).

What amazed me, was that they knew who they wanted from the very beginning, and basically went out and got those players. They were afraid that Boston was going to take Zarko, but luckily we got our man.

Don't forget JJ. By the time Penney's contract is over Amare and JJ will need new contracts that is were are money will be going to. We may still have some left over to get the finial piece in place.

But, when we are ready for that championship run, Jerry WILL go over the tax and will get that player regardless of cost.

I agree. We are getting close to something special. I spoke with someone in the Suns Org last year and they stated that they didn't want to make any big moves and get ready for when Shaq was going to be out of the league.

That's good. Considering Shaq said at the start of the season that he wanted to play for another 8 or 9 years, that'll be perfect. Marbury will be 35, Marion will be 34. Hell, even Amare will be around 30. Penny will be in a wheel chair, but that won't matter because I can just see the big story on JJ coming into the season: "JJ only needs to become more confident and he'll be ready for a starting role in this league." Todd Day, or KJ, or maybe even Eliot Perry will be the Suns coach, and Scott Williams will be battling some straight-from-middle school kid who hasn't even been born yet for the starting role at center. :p

Luckily, after this season the Lakers probably will be without Kobe, Malone, and Payton, and Shaq will play like 2 more injury riddled, temper-tantrum full seasons and call it quits.
