So Pierre Paul (yeah, more DE), Kindle, Weatherspoon  before McClain? You just really want him to be there, don't you. :D

No Washington in the first round either?

Pretty good.

Two questionmarks - Dunlap and Davis. Both are said to have "motor" issues (It's hard to say if the criticisms are real or smoke).

And the Cardinals mock with some reasoning.

1. LB Rolando McClain
I've sided with cbus on this issue. Inside linebackers always slide. It happens every year like clockwork. McClain is a player, but doesn't have great athleticism of linebackers like Dan Morgan, Patrick Willis or even Rey Maualuga. Skill positions players with average athleticism don't get taken in the lotto. I believe that works in our favor.

2. CB Patrick Robinson
I am not a fan of Patrick Robinson. He is extremely inconsistent and soft, but he does have the physical tools of a number one corner and was productive on special teams at FSU. Was a part of the cheating scandal, but the Cardinals don't put too much emphasis on academic concerns based on previous picks of Greg Toler and Brandon Keith.

3. DT Linval Joseph
Time to get it out of the way now, Joseph is Alan Branch II. Linval Joseph has the size and strength to play nose tackle. The question is whether he can actually play it. He is a raw underclassmen and ultimately might fit better at end, but it's worth the gamble. And at this point, they can't afford to be picky.

3. LB AJ Edds
McClain was selected earlier, but I like him better at Gerald Haye's strongside position. There would still be a need for a WILL and Edds fits Dansby's role perfectly. Doesn't have a lot of upside, but very smooth in coverage and knows exactly where he needs to be. The Cardinals have an affinity for Big Ten guys.

4. CB Patrick Stoudamire
Another small school corner with really good feet and athleticism. Cardinals have been showing strong interest in him.

6. TE Nate Byham
Sloooow, but a great blocker with good hands. Essentially a homeless man's Brandon Pettigrew. Should be able to fill in Anthony Becht's role when the time comes.

7. DB Cody Grimm
Special teams dynamo.

While I doubt think that McClain would be there at #26, if Clausen is still on the board, I don't think it would be too hard to convince Minny to flip first round picks, and add something later for us. Then we pick - Hughes or Griffen.

Good to see you around Shogun. I always like your draft insight as we seem to always want the same guys...

While I do agree that MLB's tend to slide, I find it hard to believe he would get to #26. Would be great if it happened though

Shogun, this draft would be perfection for me. Well done! Now hopefully reality, Whiz and the FO matches up with it!

Mangini also pulled the trigger on another uber-athletic defensive linemen in Vernon Gholston back in New York. Wimbley was a dud and the Browns only have Roth to rush the passer, Kindle fits the height/speed requirements that Parcells likes from his rush linebackers and Weatherspoon is a better fit for a Cover-2 defense the Giants are supposedly converting to.

I thought about Washington going to Atlanta as their Plan B if 'Spoon wasn't available, but Atlanta's pass rush is abysmal.

My reasoning for the the Titans pick is that they regularly go against conventional wisdom on draft day and take flyers on excellent athletes that would normally be considered reaches. Risky, but they seem to hit more than they miss.

Pittsburgh under Tomlin have always been hard to gauge and could go in a number of ways.

Good stuff. Only nit to pick is that I highly doubt Dan Williams is picked in the top ten.

As your draft unfolds I don't think it will change our outcome of getting McClain.

Would be very happy with the Cards draft.

Really good looking draft to me. I'd probably take a WR in the 3rd instead of Joseph. J. Shipley or J. Ford. And then take Joseph or Mullins in the 4th, but to be honest, I don't know anything about Stoudamire.

even though Weatherspoon is the pick in this mock, the comment in other possible choices about McClain is interesting.

1. Anthony Davis, OT - The Cardinals really need tackle help, and Anthony Davis fits the blocking scheme perfectly. He interviewed poorly at the Combine, but Arizona has drafted poor-character players before.

2. Rolando McClain, ILB - I'm listing Rolando McClain here because I really think he could fall this far. He wasn't particularly impressive at his Pro Day, and inside linebackers just aren't nearly as valuable as other positions. McClain would be a great replacement for the departed Karlos Dansby.

I also heard that Davis wasn't exactly given a glowing report by his college coach, I am guessing here but I bet that will mean more to the Cards coaches than interviewing poorly.

Also, this mock was quite well done. At first I looked at certain picks and thought, 'no, of course that's wrong!', but then looked at it from another perspective. They all make sense, and that's the best you can do in a mock draft.

It's this combined with the fact that folks on ASFN are so locked in on Weatherspoon and McClain because of need that I think WE'RE overvaluing these guys and projecting that on the way we see the first round going.

I think it's at least 50/50 proposition that one of these guys is there for us.

I think that this is really the case. Weatherspoon and McClain are both really good players, but they aren't the impact players on defense that Jason Pierre-Paul, Brandon Graham, Earl Thomas, Eric Berry, Joe Haden, Derrick Morgan, Jerry Hughes, Kyle Wilson, & Sergio Kindle all are. Also keep in mind that at least 5 offensive tackles will be taken in the first round, along with 2 or 3 wide receivers & running backs. Add in the top two d tackles, QB's, and Jermaine Gresham and that is ton of impact talent that will probably be taken before these guys.

A perfect example of this is the Eagles. Many people have the Eagles taking a Weatherspoon in the first round, but the Eagles haven't drafted a linebacker above the 3rd round in the past several years. They just don't seem to value that position high in the draft.

But, it is also perfectly true that have a serious need at LB. My sense is that if a pass rushing DE falls to them they'll jump. They need someone to combine with Trent Cole in their 4-3.

They are also in need of a CB having traded S Brown and Reid always has love for Olinemen.

I would be shocked if the Iggles pick a LB in rd 1.

I agree with Pariah, Chopper and others that have stated that there are a lot of impact players in the draft that could/should push ILB's down to us.

One more question. Are there really that many teams that even need a WILB (3-4) or OLB in a 4-3 badly enough to take one in the first round?

Miami just filled their spot with Dansby. Over half the other 3-4 teams already have high draft picks at the WILB position.

I still think we should take a day two flyer on a OLB like Dexter Davis. 3-4 Defenses are predicated on getting pressure from the OLBs, and as we stand right now we just don't have the quality depth there. Competition is paramount to building depth and taking a day 2 flyer on a guy works better for us right now than drafting one high.

Day 2 is round 2 or 3 this year. Do you mean that or "traditional" day 2--meaning rounds 4 and beyond?
