Reports are that the two man race to replace John Pelfrey, who left last week to take the Arkansas job, has narrowed down to former ASU coach Rob Evans and current University of Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz.

Lutz tried to no avail to get into the South Florida search last month.

South Alabama is considered one of the top jobs in the Sun Belt and Lutz has had issues with Charlotte's move to the Atlantic 10, which occurred two seasons ago.

Lutz has been at Charlotte for nine seasons. He has a 168-112 record at the school, going to the postseason seven times, including five NCAA appearances.

South Alabama athletic director Joe Gottfried said last week he wanted to hire either a former or current head coach.

I don't know anything about Lutz, but I'd go with him over Evans! :p Especially if he's younger. Evans is old and should just retire, he is a bad recruiter and (if its possible) a worse coach. He's a nice guy and all, and he does run a clean program, so if thats the requirement (which it may well be in the Sun Belt) then Evans is your man.

I'm not sure why Evans gets the "clean program" tag. He always prided himself on what he called "graduating" his players when after it was all said and done he had the lowest graduation rate of all bball programs in the PAC-10. I guess he thought since he was such an AWFUL coach that people thought he had his players under control off the court.

He also had a couple players who got into trouble (not out of the norm) off the court. B. Krueger got caught with drugs and weapons, Donnelle Knight got arrested for having a warrant for his arrest, etc....
