Former Card Colledge joins military

http://blog.azcardinals.com/2016/03/22/former-card-colledge-joins-military/

It’s not quite Pat Tillman choosing the Army Rangers, but it’s pretty similar: former Cardinals guard Daryn Colledge, who last played in 2014, tweeted today that with his football career over, he was joining the National Guard for the next eight years.

“After a year of retirement, a much needed vacation and overdue time with my family, I’ve decided to hit the free agent market,” Colledge wrote in part. “After much deliberation, and discussion, I’m proud to sign my longest-term deal of all time, 8 years, and have enlisted in the Army National Guard. After all my time in the NFL, traveling, meeting, and supporting the troops, I’ve decided to step up and stand shoulder to shoulder with them.

“This was not a decision made lightly. We live in an ever-changing world, at at this time in my life I feel it is best served with me in defense of my family, state, country.”

Are Nat'l Guard active duty? or are they all reserves?

They are not technically reserves.. However they function in a similar capacity. They can be activated for long periods of time but are not "active duty"

Yeah, except he is signing a contract and has to go to Army basic training and has the possibility of being activated...so pretty much nothing like Shaq.

What he could've done was sit back and enjoy retirement for a while. What he did was choose to serve his country.

Thank you for your service, sir.

There is quite a bit of smack talk between the branches and AD/Reserves.

I've rarely been impressed by guardsmen and reserves. Too much civilian in them.

Only 9 years left for me....

I little tip when you retire. Make 2 copies of all of your Medical Records and Personal file. Trust me on that one. 1 Med file is for you and 1 for the VA.

good idea to make those copies before your enlistment runs out too..... I broke my back in the military.....and "unfortunately"...they lost my medical record somewhere en route to records storage...

maybe in modern times, with computers and all that...things may be different.....but is it worth the chance?

Reserve sheriffs go through normal sheriff training and are on stand by. Just as Natty guard goes through normal training and are on stand by.

Both have the possibility to be activated. Only difference is the contract.

By the responses seems like everyone thinks that's some sort of insult to say they are the same. Cops get shot in the face just as often as soldiers now-a-days. No reason to devalue one or the other. Both are respected.
