Ja'Marr Chase wasn't the only former LSU football star to sign a record-setting contract extension on Monday. The Texans inked cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. to a three-year, $90-millon extension, making Stingley the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
Stingley was an All-Pro corner in 2024. According to PFF, his 84.4 coverage grade ranked second among NFL cornerbacks. He picked off seven passes while recording 11 pass breakups.
The Texans selected Stingley with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. After initially struggling as a rookie, Stingley emerged as one of the NFL's top defenders in 2023. He carried that momentum into 2024.
Stingley, a Baton Rouge native, signed with LSU in 2019. According to Rivals, he was the No. 1 overall recruit in his class. He was the consensus No. 1 ranked cornerback in the class.
Stingley saw the field right away with LSU. As a true freshman, he was one of the top defensive backs in the country and was a key piece of LSU's national title-winning defense. Injuries hampered Stingley's final two years with the Tigers, but thanks to his 2019, he's remembered as one of the top corners in LSU history.
