After two seasons at Ohio State, guard/forward Evan Mahaffey has found a new home.
Friday morning, Mahaffey posted to social media that he had committed to the University of Akron for his final season of college basketball. A 6-6, 220-pound player, Mahaffey began his career at Penn State before transferring to the Buckeyes when coach Micah Shrewsberry took the same job at Notre Dame.
He has averaged 3.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in 102 appearances for the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions.
“Just a huge thank you to Buckeye Nation for supporting me through all the ups and downs of me being there, and all the support they showed with my family when we were going through hard times,” Mahaffey told The Dispatch.
After his season at Penn State, Mahaffey transferred to Ohio State in part to be closer to home as his father, Jamie, dealt with a serious health condition that ultimately resulted in a heart transplant during the 2023-24 season.
Mahaffey was a mainstay in the Ohio State starting lineup as a sophomore and returned for his junior year to play for first-year coach Jake Diebler. But after averaging 3.6 points and 3.1 rebounds while playing 18.0 minutes per game, Mahaffey entered the transfer portal for his senior season. He also blocked a career-high 28 shots this season.
He will reunite with a former teammate in Akron: guard Bowen Hardman, who spent his first two years at Ohio State before transferring to the Zips after the 2023-24 season.
