Former Carolina Panthers running back/wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. is headed further down into the NFC South.
According to ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, Jones is expected to sign with the New Orleans Saints.
Jones, a third-round pick of the Chicago Bears from the 2022 NFL draft, was signed off the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad by the Panthers in December. Carolina had designs of utilizing the 27-year-old speedster as a running back rather than as receiver.
"Yeah, it's a challenge," head coach Dave Canales previously said of the transition for Jones. "And I think it's an opportunity to have a really talented athlete—six-feet, 200 [pounds], can run like crazy, he's got some return value, all those things.
"But there's a lot that goes into the running back position. You gotta respect the amount of pass protection things that go into it, coming over from receiver to running back. So that's one of the biggest challenges."
Jones appeared in just two games for the Panthers. He recorded one carry for zero yards.
