Isn't it nice to have an off-season wherein we aren't worrying about who we are going to lose?
Bert Berry was a useful catch. I think it's funny that everyone is so excited about a small-sized speed rusher coming to town. The Cards had one of the best of that type and ran him out of town.
Still, Berry does play the run harder, however like Rice, he can be run at and many teams did so last season. This is especially a concern because the Cards employ small linebackers.
On the plus side, he will get sacks and he will force the quarterback to step up, which could lead to a better season for Bryant and Bell (if he returns). Barry is also solid dropping back into coverage for stunting with those small, fast linebackers. I wouldn't worry about the stuff being mentioned about Berry only being productive in his free agent year. He came out of college as a linebacker and much of his early career was spent on the bench. You can't learn his position except at game speed. If the Cards go into the season with him as the only solid rushing threat, he may not get the sacks he had last year, but he will get more than any other Cardinal has since Rice left.
It is interesting that King was the choice for the open QB slot. He's not some aged vet looking for a paycheck. He still wants a chance to prove he can play in this league. It indicates to me that the Cards aren't entirely sold on McCown. I can't believe all the negative labels I am seeing placed on this guy. It takes years before you should write off a QB. Tampa doesn't like anyone and has one of the league's worst reputations for developing quarterbacks. This is a smart acquisition. He doesn't have a great deep arm, but he has displayed good accuracy. If the Cards do end up with Fitzgerald, precision, not arm strength will be the key to the Cards passing attack.
Ayanbadejo is one of the better special team players in the league and can catch the ball if you are flooding the field with receivers. He is not a blocking back in the true sense, unless he has improved since I last saw him. The Cards needed to upgrade their special teams and how often do second or third string FBs play on offense?
I see Dez White is coming in this week. If his price is right, he fits also. O'Hara is sort of the mean streak type I like to see in the line. He played quite a bit of right guard at Cleveland. He's medium quality, but a change of scenery may help. Cleveland has been looking to upgrade at his slot.
I am surprised Macklin didn't get an offer. I am assuming this is the case, because usually that would be public info. Maybe his asking price was ridiculous, since the market was so depleted. At least there are decent corners in the draft. I like the vets still out there, but their price/play ratio is likely too steep for the Cards. I think Madison will be a target if the numbers are right on the Berry contract. The Cards have the money for a big push on somebody.
I still think they may go after an RFA, like Diem.
As to what Green has up his sleeve, I don't think Berry was it. It is likely a trade for picks or an RFA move. As I said before, Green plays a good game of poker.
