Isn't it nice to have an off-season wherein we aren't worrying about who we are going to lose?

Bert Berry was a useful catch. I think it's funny that everyone is so excited about a small-sized speed rusher coming to town. The Cards had one of the best of that type and ran him out of town.
Still, Berry does play the run harder, however like Rice, he can be run at and many teams did so last season. This is especially a concern because the Cards employ small linebackers.

On the plus side, he will get sacks and he will force the quarterback to step up, which could lead to a better season for Bryant and Bell (if he returns). Barry is also solid dropping back into coverage for stunting with those small, fast linebackers. I wouldn't worry about the stuff being mentioned about Berry only being productive in his free agent year. He came out of college as a linebacker and much of his early career was spent on the bench. You can't learn his position except at game speed. If the Cards go into the season with him as the only solid rushing threat, he may not get the sacks he had last year, but he will get more than any other Cardinal has since Rice left.

It is interesting that King was the choice for the open QB slot. He's not some aged vet looking for a paycheck. He still wants a chance to prove he can play in this league. It indicates to me that the Cards aren't entirely sold on McCown. I can't believe all the negative labels I am seeing placed on this guy. It takes years before you should write off a QB. Tampa doesn't like anyone and has one of the league's worst reputations for developing quarterbacks. This is a smart acquisition. He doesn't have a great deep arm, but he has displayed good accuracy. If the Cards do end up with Fitzgerald, precision, not arm strength will be the key to the Cards passing attack.

Ayanbadejo is one of the better special team players in the league and can catch the ball if you are flooding the field with receivers. He is not a blocking back in the true sense, unless he has improved since I last saw him. The Cards needed to upgrade their special teams and how often do second or third string FBs play on offense?

I see Dez White is coming in this week. If his price is right, he fits also. O'Hara is sort of the mean streak type I like to see in the line. He played quite a bit of right guard at Cleveland. He's medium quality, but a change of scenery may help. Cleveland has been looking to upgrade at his slot.

I am surprised Macklin didn't get an offer. I am assuming this is the case, because usually that would be public info. Maybe his asking price was ridiculous, since the market was so depleted. At least there are decent corners in the draft. I like the vets still out there, but their price/play ratio is likely too steep for the Cards. I think Madison will be a target if the numbers are right on the Berry contract. The Cards have the money for a big push on somebody.

I still think they may go after an RFA, like Diem.

As to what Green has up his sleeve, I don't think Berry was it. It is likely a trade for picks or an RFA move. As I said before, Green plays a good game of poker.

As always good info Harry.

Hopefully we will see a lot of rotating the D-line depending on downs and distance. Keep them fresh and use them when they have the best chance to shine.

I understand the feeling that the right side of the O-line needs help but it seems everyone keeps forgetting about Roundtree. If I remember correctly he played very well at RG in 02. This just leaves a need at RT if Clement doesn't get back to form before his injuries.

Great stuff Harry, I look forward to your posts!

Question: What do you think about Brandon Short?

I would love to sign the guy, he'd give us a better option in the middle.

Nice post Harry, I also look forward to reading your thoughts on players. Madison is the guy I want to see us get also.
What are your thoughts on the two Eagle CBs? I am going to look at some game film this week to try and get some idea of which one is still close to being at the top of his game.

King is also a good fit because he is mobile so if he has to sub for McCown then the Offense doesnt have to change much.

Even if Berry doesnt get the same amount of sacks, just him being in the field will get other guys sacks becuase there is a guy on the dline that a team actually has to double team or roll away from. So with Berry on the field and with the continued development and the new coaching I am excited to see what the youngins, Bryant, Pace, King, and Johnson can realy do.

Macklin may have recieved an offer we just dont know it, becuase he would talk to media in every town he went to so far. He may be playing things on the down low right now.

As for the trick up his sleeve, I dont hink was it at all, so things in the next couple of months should be fun.

Times change, Harry.

When Simeon was drafted, Vince Tobin was coach and Mac was his DC. The traditional "follow the herd" MO in the League was that you needed a big front four, including an edge RE who was big enough, physical enough and willing enough to defend against the run.

Since then, we've seen all kinds of zone blitz, mix & match, 3-4/4-3 schemes with tweeners like Teddy Bruschi or light, super-quick pass rush specialists like Dwight Freenie stepping to the fore.

Berry would have been out of place 6 or 7 years ago on a Tobin team, but figures to be utilized in a more surgical fashion as a role-player under Denny.

At least that seems to be what the hope is.

rather curious that (per somers in sunday's az republic) the cardinals were going to sign berry and Hicks....sounds like 2 starting defensive ends to me...that means the following guys would be backups (if they are with the team): Pace, Johnson, KVB, Wakefield..and Kenny king (but I assume King will be more of a tackle)....I would have guessed we would have signed of the top available defensive ends (which we did)..and one tackle, one corner and one safety (depending on where wilson lines up). I hear speculation that Wilson will be tried at corner...but if that is the case - I think we would have had a safety in for a look (unless we are going with Taylor). So...not much action at tackle in FA..but alot of action at the end position...I think we need a starter at both...

Now the crowd of pace, johnson, kvb and wakefield is not a great crowd - but I suppose we can hope one of them steps up at one of the end spots (but we spent last season hoping for the same thing)...

As FA goes on and teams run out of money guys like Macklin will get realistic money. He can still end up here. So could an older vet like Taylor or Vincent. If these players want to play next year (and also the late team cuts to come) they will have to sign reasonable contracts. Shorter terms lesser bonuses. You don't have to overpay the closer it gets to the season. You don't have to do deals like NYJ did with Barrett.

Short is a solid player, but Green seems to feel he can get by one more season with McKinnon in the middle. The Cards have spent about all the money they can afford to tie up in linebackers, unless they get a great one.

I haven't forgotten about Roundtree, but his availability has not been very dependable.

Taylor is the better of the Eagle CBs, but I think both are too expensive to suit the Cards' plans, especially considering the punishment they have taken through the years.

I change less than the times. I fought to keep Rice when they had him. He was a pain, but the defense was better when he was here.

Thanks for the kind words.

I think DJ stepped up a little last year.

If he has worked hard this offseason...he could grab a starting spot.

Just watched that loser on channel 12 sports sunday. If you watch he is guys come on from the other medias and talk about this week in sports. Both of these guys one from channel 12 and a guy named Asher from 910 radio had this to say after Curtis asked them if they thought with these signings it shows that with Green things will finally turn around for the Cards.

Asher says I don't know after these free agents signed I'm not that impressed. In fact I never heard of this Berry fellow? The other guy says he will wait to have an opinion till the season. What Bull....! No guts and obviuosly no knowledge to boot. Even if you don't know the Berry look him up before you go on the show and prove your an idiot.

I Feel better.
