This little tidbit in Pro Football Weekly probably was missed by almost everyone who picked up the subscription. The info. wasn't listed in the "rumor mill" section as most founded or unfounded rumors are listed, but instead in a short section on how free agency was unfolding this offseason. In the article they make reference to the Cards holding back a bit this offseason because they may take a run at Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander who is a big favorite of new Cards coach Dennis Green.

Interesting stuff. I kind of remember hearing that the Vikes were trying to move up in the 2000 draft to take Alexander because Denny was pretty sure that Robert Smith was getting ready to retire.

Wow!!

THAT would be a tremendous pick-up. ...And if its' true, it would explain why we pass on an RB this year (if we do). Isn't it FUN being a Cards' fan now?? Players hear Coach Greens' name and say, "Man, I would luv to play for that guy". My dad always said, "Winners win!!" ...And over the years, I've seen that to be true. Players get paid an incredible amount of $$ but deep-down they STILL just want to win. To be a champion. ...And to be in a situation where they're happy & respected for their contributions. GO CARDS!!

Interesting very interesting. Although it is from PFW it does sound as if it has some merit.

The question is will Seattle use its franchise tag on him or try to resign him during the year.

He will be tagged. The Seahags won't let one of their best player test the market and esp won't go to a divisional rival.

He won't be tagged if they tag Walter Jones again.

Alexander can't be tagged if the Seahawks insist on playing hardball with OT Walter Jones who they have tagged each of the last 3 seasons. Jones appears to be heading toward another holdout and another 1 year franchise salary. I would guess that they would tag Jones over Alexander because Holmgren has a history of getting decent backs later in the draft and they already have the Morris kid who is a favorite of Holmgren.

And to think Alexander slid all the way to the 19th or something in the draft.

I like Alexander, but he's not very consistent. The Cards don't have enough nationally-televised games for him to gain 1300 yards a season.

A friend of mine who follows the Seahags told me that Alexander wants to go to a big market.

Alexander is 27 right now which gives him no more than 4-5 years left as a premeire back. If he was signed to a marginal contract similar to the one Stephen Davis has with the Panthers, I'd think about it. If he wants big money long-term, any team would be smart to tell him to take a hike.

I don't know. 4-5 years is about what you'd want from a FA tailback. The contract wouldn't really be good for much longer than three years, anyhow.

IF the Cards are looking at 3-4 national games in 2005, I'd say "do it". The splits on Alexander on national v. local games are staggering. I don't know if he's worth franchise (top 5) money, but he's probably worth "transition" (top 10) cash.

Rumors like these are a dime a dozen.
I don't buy it. Plus the Cards did not hold back. You can't hold back 1 year to get players another year. Cap doesn't work like that.
Folks don't get to worked up about rumors about this year let alone a year from now.

Basing a personnel decision this year on what you MAY be able to do next year is pretty risky in this "win-now" NFL environment. I agree with Skkorp. A lot can happen over 12 months. Come back 10 months from now when we know where the Cards, the SheHawks and Alexander are at.

If Green wants him then hes great and worth every penny.

The more I watch Alexander the more he reminds me of Ottis Anderson. Slap a #32 on his back and he is a virtual clone of Anderson. Ottis was and still is my favorite Cards player and Alexander was my favorite Crimson Tide (favorite college team). Lets hope Pro Football Weekly knows what they are talking about.

Any good player is going to want top dollar. To come to AZ they will want even more.

I think the "average" carreer of an NFL running back is 4 years.

Was looking at one the major Sporting Papers today and it had an article on three coaches who screwed up big time this year. Yes Green was right there with his benching of McCown with a 2 game winning streak. The coach from MN made the list by having Randy Moss throw that interception into the endzone late in the game and with three defenders all over him. That really was a dumb call.
