I think it's well past the point of arguing over another head coach. Those good enough to turn this thing around would require an amount of power, as some have said, that won't be handed with a first year VP of personnel on the job and in the wake of the Ryan era. I'm not a big fan of McGinnis or Marmie, but an aggressive approach to this game would have further exposed corners that have no business starting in this league. Rhinehart's penalty about said it all. They had no chance of keeping up with the Rams wideouts in this game.
I also find it rather ironic that the 3-4 is now the excuse for Suggs' being good instead of (as some around here frequently stated during the pre-season) evidence as to why the Cards were right not to take him. Guess that's what happens when the guy Graves' passed on has twice the sacks than this team's collective effort. Typical.
So Suggs being a good pass rush linebacker has no bearing on what he could or couldn't do in Arizona. After all, the last thing the Cards wanted was a linebacker to get after the passer on regular downs while putting his hand down in passing downs. Wait, doesn't that describe Roosevelt Colvin? Oh, but he was hurt. Hypotheticals do serve some purpose, I suppose. As long as the line up with a certain point of view. Namely Graves'.
You can't fault Pace, though. The guy has no one around him who other teams respect and why this team refuses to switch to a 3-4 is beyond me. Then again, even a 3-4 wouldn’t protect the Cards corners from being routinely picked on. I said it before the season, how a so-called GM can throw out these corners against an NFC West that features the likes of Koren Robinson, Terrell Owens, Bruce/Holt is beyond crazy. It should also give some pause to those still holding onto the "Graves has plan" crutch. Obviously it was a good one in regards to pass defense.
I'm rooting for you guys, I really am. Those loyal beyond logic deserve some semblance of hope, but I must say, I don't see it.
What I do see is another decent coach getting the can after a bad season with terrible personnel and with an unprecedented 15% of their salary resources untapped. I don't know about you, but I can't wait to see who on what's looking like a 4-12 team is the deserving recipient of an multi-year extension. Or who wants one for that matter.
