Why do you think that? We'd have Watson and Branch in the middle. I could see our pass rush suffering if we don't bring the blitz, but I'd figure we be stronger in run D.

Then, too, why not any scheme - so long as the right players, gaps and zones are covered?

I'm an advocate of a true hybrid defense in which each of the 11 players can be used interchangeably to fill any role (thereby giving opposing offenses fits with regard to line calls, reading the secondary etc.).

It's all a matter of who you have on the field at any given time - and what each guy is capable of doing (i.e. unless you are the consummate "riverboat gambler", you might not want to match up Gabe Watson with the other team's crack receiver - but you might gamble on matching him up with a TE and blitzing Hayes up the middle).

As such, it's immaterial to me whether it's a 3-4-4, 4-3-4, 3-3-5 or 11-0-0 - since all it represents is a defensive "look." What's important is who among those 11 players winds up doing what - and those assignments can be as varied as Clancy P's fiendish imagination can come up with.

Think about it this way. We have 4 down linemen. Two quality LB's and you could have Wilson in the box most plays un a psuedo-LB position. There really isn't that much of a change when you look at it overall.

Maybe you could think about it another way, where you have the 4 DL, 2 LBs, and then your 5 DBs are 2 corners in Hood and Green and one FS in Holt. Then you have 2 "Talon" backs in Wilson and Rolle. The base secondary coverage is a Cover-3, where Hood, Green, and Holt have middle thirds of the field:

Rolle or Wilson would become de-facto Will linebackers, depending on the playcall and formation. I think this gives you the best coverage/blitz option. At the same time, you still have Berry on the field (Backed up by Calvin Pace), who can pick his hand up to go into a 3-3-5 look, where you don't know where the fourth rusher is coming from.

Then Francisco can spell either talon back or the FS, or you can go to a "heavy" 4-2-5 where you have Francisco, Rolle, and Wilson on the field.
