The Diamondbacks and regional network Fox Sports Net Arizona have signed an eight-year agreement that will move all of the club's televised games to the cable station beginning next season.

The deal means that Channel 3 (KTVK) will no longer carry the Diamondbacks after having aired games since the team's inaugural season in 1998.

It will make the Diamondbacks one of a growing number of teams to put their full schedule of games on a cable network.

Team officials say a large number of their fan base has cable or satellite television. They also believe the new arrangement adds simplicity in that fans will know where to look and programming conflicts will no longer arise.

The deal is a rights fee arrangement; meaning FSNAZ pays a fee and sells the advertising. In the current arrangement, which this season split 150 games evenly between Channel 3 and FSNAZ, the team has been selling its own ads for games on Channel 3.

FSNAZ will carry up to 150 games a season through 2015. FSNAZ had carried 60 games a year from 1998 to 2005 before increasing to 70 last season and 75 this year, FSN spokesman Brett Hansen said.

"If a fan is going to want to watch Diamondbacks baseball, they're going to watch it on FSN Arizona," said Mike Connelly, FSNAZ's senior vice president and general manager. "It continues our vision for being a home for local sports."

Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall said the team was sensitive to fans who don't have cable or satellite.

"It's certainly something we consider," he said. "We had the same concern over the last couple of years when we were reducing the number (of games on Channel 3)."

FSNAZ reaches 2.8 million households in Arizona and New Mexico, and according to Hansen, the latest Nielsen Media Research numbers show that 85 percent of the Phoenix market and 83 percent of the Tucson market have cable or satellite penetration.

Channel 3 executives could not be reached for comment Thursday evening.

The Florida Marlins, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox have their full schedule of games on regional networks.

"I think that's eventually where everybody is going to go because over-the-air stations have fewer and fewer time slots available and they don't want to have to cut programming," Hall said. "The Fox regional networks provide the perfect stage for 150 games."

Hall said there are fewer programming conflicts on regional networks - for games and for pregame and postgame shows.

Weak, it was nice seeing home games in HD. There is no way that we will see games in HD on a regular basis.

FSN makes it seem like it is a "treat" to watch games in HD, and only does it on Friday nights.

Lame.

They will do HD when the market demands it. Unfortunately Fox Sports has never been an innovator, and is always behind ESPN.

I suppose this is good news, I won't have to see 3tv's crappy graphics anymore! On the other hand, I could probably remove the channel now and never ever miss it!

Well this is kind of lame, this will preclude lower income folks w/ out cable from ever getting to see the Dbacks and thats unfortunate.

The unfortunate reality is that people who can't afford to buy tickets or merchandise are the last of the DBacks or any other sports organization's worries.

I suppose. I think mostly about kids who's parents can't afford cable, who w/ the ability to watch the game on 3tv could grow up to be future fans have now had their Dbacks fandom stunted. I'd like to see some games on 3tv, I liked the current format.

Lame! I refuse to pay extra money each month for 2, maybe 3 quality HD channels. So I enjoyed watching the home games in HD with my OTA antenna.

The market is starting to demand hdtv service. All that is really advertised anymore is hdtv unless its a 19 or 23 inch tv for 99 bucks or something. The proportion of hd vs non-hd tv's in a store is skewed towards hd as well. Sort of like when the tape selection became one rack and cd's were the rest of the music store.

HDTV penetrates 30% of U.S. households

CEA SmartBrief | 06/27/2007

Thirty percent of U.S. households have HDTV, and 50% of those households are interested in upgrading their HD-subscription packages, according to a new Consumer Electronics Association study, "HDTV: You Have the Set, But Do You Have the Content." The study found that gaming and movies are driving forces for HDTV conversion. TMC Internet Telephony (06/26)

No hd fsn for cox.

However I've read cox wants to have 50 hd channels by years end so hopefully fsn is one of them.

Here's a page describing cox's hd goals

Kinda funny they just start hd 3 and they lose the d-backs after this year.

It sucks that OTA D-back games will be no more. Both OTA HD, and regular OTA.

Young kids still tend to buy a lot of sports clothes even if they don't have cable. They may not have cable but they might buy that byrnes jersey because he saw on tv how he hustled or whatnot. It all adds up. The game promotes itself, less of it, all things being equal, is not an ideal way to go.

Not when Greg Schulte is calling the action. When that happens baseball on the radio is confusing.
Greg has been around a long time. Ten years with the D'backs. He did color commentary on Suns games alongside Al McCoy for two years, too, after producing the simulcasts.

And he overcame cancer. And doesn't hesitate to make fun of himself when he flubs. He's a good guy.

But . . . he doesn't call a game as it happens. "Oh, look at that." Then he steps on the color guy's toes going back and describing the play that just happened.

I've given my opinion before. I'd like to hear Vin Scully-soundalike Jeff Munn do play-by-play with a good color guy. In other words, a new color guy.

Tom Candiotti's presentations are as boring as his knuckleball were.

My parents could've afforded cable when I was growing up, but my mom always said no. If they had done all-FSN in 1998 I would probably still be a Braves fan.

I concur.

My Grandparents in Wickinburg can't watch the D'Backs now.
My Grandma is a HUGE D'backs fan, and watches every game on 3TV religiously.

This sucks.

I refuse to pay for cable or satellite. We've had it in the past, but it's only more channels of crap to flip through instead of the 5 or so OTA channels.
Very little programming worth watching although we do enjoy Dbacks games.
Oh well, the radio works.

What people are failing to realize is that there is a broadcast shutoff date in the very near future. In 2009, if you are using rabbit ears on an older TV, that analog broadcast isn't going to be there much longer. The only way you could get OTA broadcasts is if it's on the digital band. So it's not just the Diamondbacks "abandoning" the lower-income families.

btw, first post nice to be here.

Will Gracie be one of the announcers when they go to FSN Arizona exclusively? I hope so, he's one of my favorites.
