Teddy Bridgewater might have a fine career, or not. Too soon to say. If he were with the Cardinals, he would PROBABLY be two years away from getting a chance to play. For us the future is now. And for now we have a QB, and we seem set for the next couple of years.

Are you referring to Palmer?? With a nerve related injury, are we really set with him? That's the whole purpose of this thread. If Palmer were 100%, I'm not the least bit concerned about next year. Or the year after that. Take arm strength away from Palmer & there's not much left. Especially in our offensive system. He's not the type of QB that can reinvent himself. What's the likelihood he recovers 100% from this injury?? No one can say for sure. If he doesn't, is Stanton a bonafide long term solution?

To correct clown-boy's hypothesis from up the page, Whizengrimm was terrible at developing quarterbacks. Arians, Moore, Goodwin, and the rest may be superheroes at the job. Screw 87 year old Brady. I wish we had Garropolo at this point.

What NFL team has two legit quarterbacks. If Manning goes down tomorrow do the Broncos have a legit QBOTF no. Those days of taking a QB and letting him sit and learn are long gone.

We have a legit starter a quality back up and a project that's about as well as you can hope for in the NFL

To point out the obvious, this team isn't going to be looking for just any good QB. He's going to have to be a pocket-aware guy that can throw the long ball consistently. As long as Arians is the head coach, that's going to be our offense.
That does narrow the search down a bit.

That is your opinion. Mine is very different. I see a QB that has more upside than Russell Wilson and can make a team win with both his smarts and big play ability.

Almost no teams in the NFL have a "quarterback of the future". The whole idea that the Cards are somehow alone is foolish.

The best quarterbacks in the NFL are QBOTP's.

Who has a proven qb who will be around for more than another year or two?

Wilson
Kaepernick maybe
Tannehill maybe
Newton
Stafford has some years left.

You so Crazy.

NE: Jimmy Garappolo
MIA: Ryan Tannehill

HOU: Tom Savage
IND: Andrew Luck
JAC: Blake Bortles

BAL: Flacco
CIN: Dalton
CLE: Johnny Football

DEN: Osweiler
KC: Alex Smith
OAK: Derek Carr

And that's just in the AFC. It's almost easier to name teams that don't have clear quarterbacks for the next four to five years. Buffalo, the Jets maybe, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, San Diego, St. Louis, the Giants, Washington prolly, Dallas, New Orleans, and us.

The Broncos invested a 2nd or 3rd round pick in Brock Oseweiler two years ago! Is he going to produce like Manning would? Of course not, but neither will 90% of the starting quarterback in the NFL.

I think the "Best you can hope for" would be having a quality backup that's also a developmental starter for you.

Your confusing QBOTF with just a quarterback. Those guys you named are starters. If you going to put guys like Manziel, Savage and half those other guys then Logan Thomas needs to be on that list he's every bit the QB they are.

Who's Joe Flaccos back up? What about Andrew Luck? Those guys are starters playing right now

Gimme a break. If you have a quarterback that's 28 or lower, you don't need to consider a young, quality backup that you can consider your future. If you have a quarterback that (1) you can compete with for a division title, and (2) you can reasonably assume is going to be getting better or sustained performance for the next three to five years, you have a quarterback of the future.

Joe Flacco doesn't turn 30 until next January. He's fine for at least the next three years.
Andrew Luck turned 25 last month.

Investing draft capital in a backup that you're praying isn't going to have to play is a terrible investment in resources.

I just plain disagree that Logan Thomas--even just based on college production--is as good a prospect as Johnny Manziel.

Quality NFL Starters and their ages:
Andy Dalton turns 27 at the end of the month.
Colin Kapernick turns 27 next month.
Russell Wilson turns 26(!!) at the end of November.
Ryan Tannehill turns 27 next summer.
Matt Ryan doesn't turn 30 until next offseason.
Matt Stafford turns 27 Super Bowl week (how is this even possible? Doesn't it feel like he's been playing for 10 years?)
Aaron Rodgers turns 31 this December.
Jay Cutler turns 32 in April.
Alex Smith turns 31 next May.
Cam Newton turns 26 in May.

If your team has a quarterback from the above list, you don't need to worry about acquiring a quarterback of the future. You have one. The only team that might consider finding a developmental guy is Chicago, and they have Jimmy Claussen, so no worries there.

What do you think quarterback meetings are like with Cutler and Claussen? Yikes.

This is the NFL it can all change in one play just all a young Carson Palmer

What are you even talking about? Palmer has started 109 NFL games since that knee injury in the playoffs. He started five more seasons for the Bengals after that injury.

Arians came to Arizona in the post-Warner era. He immediately brought in a QB he trusted in Stanton, and then immediately after that got Palmer, who's the best QB we've had since Warner. Palmer got hurt and now Stanton is starting (and so far, winning).

So I'm not as worried about us going back to the post-Warner era, which is better qualified the post-Warner Whisenhunt era. I'm pro-Whisenhunt, but so far I don't see Arians as indecisive in the same way--or inclined to think he can work wonders on cue.

As for QBOTF? I think for the most part there's only QB of the present in today's NFL. My guess is that Arians didn't like Teddy or Manziel better than what he had + Bucannon. We'll see if he's wrong...

With both winless teams (Raiders/Jags) having their QBOTF's I could see Mariota-Winston-Hundley falling lower than expected. Depending how much the Bucs/Skins believe in Glennon/Cousins they could slip past the top-5. The Rams, Jets and WHIZ could all land their guy.

I wouldn't rule out Connor Cook if he fell to our first round pick...

The scary thing is, I haven't really seen any QB's, other than Jameis, in college that have been impressive as NFL caliber QB's. I want nothing to do with Mariota. When Sean Mannion may be your best pro-style option, it's not a good year.

NFC East
Giants - Manning is good for a few more years as franchise guy. Needs help.
Redskins - Griffin and Cousins may be average at best. Just guys.
Eagles - Foles has looked good so far, last week notwithstanding. Franchise.
Cowboys - Romo nearing the end. Idiot Jones just gave him $100MM. OK for present, not for future.

South

Saints - Brees very solid franchise guy for now. Not for long.
Falcons - Ryan franchise for years to come.
Bucs - Just guys. Glennon?
Panthers - Newton is franchise caliber, even if he is a sack of hammers.

North

Lions - Stafford is solid franchise caliber qb.
Packers - Rogers is great, but 10 years in. Some time left.
Vikings - I like Bridgewater but he ain't a franchise qb just yet
Bears - Cutler is good. Ten years along as well. Drafted next to Leinart.

West -

Seahawks - Wilson is smart, young and a winner. He's in the best position in the NFL. Franchise.
9ers - I'm not as sold on Kaepernick as everyone else. Athletic freak. Not composed. Franchise though.
Rams - Bradford has held them back. Feel for the kid, but no qb here.
Cardinals - Palmer's injury really screws with this teams plans. Stanton is a backup and Thomas may never see the field. Bad qb situation for the long term as of now. Winning with a talented roster for now.

Most troubled NFC teams long term: Cards, Rams, Redskins, Buccaneers
Good but late career starters: Bears, Packers, Saints, Giants, Cowboys
Good young franchise guys: Seahawks, 49ers, Lions, Falcons, Panthers, Eagles
Young guys maybe with potential: Vikings

The enviable position to be in is with a proven young guy and a good team around him. Seattle, San Francisco, and Philadelphia fit that bill the best in the NFC.

This is a good post AZCrazy. Really solid.

Don't agree with all of it but I'll just be positive and focus on the positives.

Totally agree with you on Kaepernick. Not sold. The guy can spin a football though, really spin it. But I'm starting to question whether he just gets it. As in understands offenses and defenses. Sometimes I think they made a mistake getting rid of Smith. You can build a running game around Smith, you can build a defense around Smith. They won games and NFC championships with this dude.

You get Kaep and pay him that money and you almost have to justify it by throwing. I think K9 said at some point the 9ers may have one of the most talented WR core in the NFL and just look at it. It's stacked with vets and more vets of badasses and yet Kaep can't make it work.

Disagree about Cutler though. He isn't good. Look, he can make all the throws, every throw there is. But he sucks. He can't make them consistently. He'll throw some superb **** one play back shoulder and then the next time wing an INT. That's inexcusable for someone with his talent and experience. That should never happen. Cutler does that routinely.

I take that back. I finally saw a QB that I was very impressed with today. Shane Carden from East Carolina looks like a young Phillip Rivers. The funny thing is I hated Rivers as a prospect coming out NCST but Carden was athletic, accurate, and showed very good arm strength. He should definitely be on the radar.

I think Cutler is Jeff George. Great, great arm, terrible decision making too often and a real butthead personality. His temperament and judgment on the field keeps him from being a great QB.

That's a great analogy. Better than Vince Young or Matt Leinart, but not gonna win the big one.

Look at the AFC now:

AFC East:

NYJ: Geno should have been able to lock this down by now, but seems to have been overestimated. Has a weak O around him hampering judgement. Vick is of little consequence at this point.

New England: Brady seems human for the first time, as the Pats suffer from poor drafting and losing trades for the first time. HOF qb is nearing the end of his useful career unless Pats acquire far more talent.

Bills: Took Manuel as the first qb last year, but if you're benched for Kyle Orton, there's trouble in River City. Still searching, also with weak O around him. Both Jets and Bills have tremendous defensive fronts, weak offensive fronts.

Miami: Tannehill looking like the surprise of his draft. With effective coaching and playmakers, has done well in spite of the collapse of his O Line in a weird way. He'll be their guy for a long time.

NFC South:

Jacksonville: Weak roster challenges true individual evaluation, but Bortles seems like the real deal. They should build around him.

Indy: Lucky Indianapolis lucked into the best qb of his generation yet again. Give Andrew Luck enough weapons and he'll be a champion. Total franchise.

Tennessee: Whiz is in a bad spot, having to develop a qb. Locker peaks at mediocre at the NFL level. No hope for now.

Houston: Schaub went from Pro Bowl to toilet bowl overnight and was dumped. Fitzpatrick and the rookie are dudes. Winning with D right now. Need a long term guy.

AFC North:

Pittsburgh: Roethlisberger has taken his team to three SB's, has immense talent, but the glory days are gone as the team cycles down into rebuilding. He's ten years in. Won't win another. Franchise entrenched.

Baltimore: Flacco doesn't get enough credit. He's not a HOFer but is a winner if the team is good. He's Romo-esque. But he just signed a $100MM deal and is entrenched. Franchise.

Cincinnati: It's been in vogue to trash Dalton, but he's the firm leader of one of the best teams in the NFL. He won't be unseated. Franchise.

Cleveland: Hoyer is an actual grownup, and will lead the team until Manziel impresses anyone. Josh Gordon's absence hurts badly. The D is good, but this roster is thready. Need a long term answer in a lot of spots. Manziel? We'll see, but I never thought so.

AFC West:

Denver: Enjoying the fruits of the ageless wonder right now, built to win this year. Manning may be the best ever, but doesn't have long. Maybe Osweiler can go all Aaron Rodgers on them. Franchise for now.

KC: Alex Smith is an enigma. Can look highly competent at times and buffoonish at others. He'll win often enough to visit the playoffs, but can you really see him hoisting the Lombardi? His contract holds him in franchise place.

Oakland: Derek Carr has big potential, but sadly, has gone to the most dysfunctional team in the league. They should build around him.

San Diego: Philip Rivers is a high quality qb that can win and go deep. Firmly entrenched franchise player.

Aging quality quarterbacks who will be around a bit longer and win with a decent team: New England, Pittsburgh, Denver, San Diego

Middle of the road entrenched QB's. KC, Miami, Ciincinnati, Baltimore

Young potential studs: Jacksonville, Oakland

Young stars: Indy

Troubled teams: NYJ, Cleveland, Houston, Buffalo, Tennessee

Best overall situation : Indy
Upcoming early qb draft picks: Houston, Tennesee, Jets

Here's a new name for all you John Skelton fans. Fordham has a QB, who is breaking JS's records. His name is Mike Nebrich, and while I know very little about him, but yesterday in a 60-22 victory over Penn, he threw for 566 yards and six TD's. And before you throw him under the bus, remember Derek and David Carr.
