There's speculation that the Redskins and possibly Tennessee might try to trade up to grab Gabbert.

Assuming the Cards are going in a different direction, this presents some intriguing scenarios:

Assume for a moment that Newton, Dareus, Peterson and Green or Miller are gone by the time we pick at #5. Phone rings. It's Tennessee at #8 wanting to trade up to #5.

They'd then take Gabbert at #5; Cards would now pick 3 spots later with Green or Miller, J Jones, Quinn and Fairley still on the board. We'd be guaranteed we'd get one of those guys plus an extra pick (presumably in round 2).

Or it's Washington at #10 wanting to wheel and deal. They'd grab Gabbert at #5 and we'd be guaranteed to grab one of the following: Green or Miller, J Jones, Quinn, Fairley or (surprise!) Aldon Smith - a pass rusher like Miller who's shooting up the boards.

The key to both trades is that we not trade out of the scouting dept's group of elite players and that we get enough in return

The Cardinals trading with anyone scares the hell out of me. Like someone posted earlier we would end up with a B. Johnson/Pace instead of Suggs. I say we stay true to the board and take BPA at 5.

I'm equally as leery, but feel that - so long as the Cards don't trade out of the elite category (the way they did moving from Suggs all the way down to Johnson and Pace) they can make the trade as "fail safe" as you can get.

But, as you point out - these is the Cards and their past history gives us all reason to be nervous if not flat-out scared.

Still - teams who live their lives looking thru rear view mirrors and fearful of risking a mistake tend to be perennial bottom feeders.

It's not a matter of doing the "safe thing" or the "risky thing." Good teams consistently do the "right thing."

Unless a Tenn or Wash back up a truck full of picks I would not trade out if Gabbert is there. It is our biggest need and Skelton is a project at best. You give yourself a better shot taking a Qb in round 1 than in round 2 or 3. Get a motherlode of picks or take the Qb if he is there. Cards suck at trading out under Graves and Wiz needs to finally develop a Qb of his own here in the Dezert. Get the Qb if he is there.

If Dareus, Peterson, Green and Miller are gone, I'd make either of those trades, if a second rounder was involved. If Peterson or Miller were there, no. If Green is there, Yes. That leaves J. Jones, Fairley, Aldon Smith, Amukamara, Quinn, and Kerrigan as possibilities. Gabbert might be good down the road, but he's going to be a project for a while. (JMO).
