Was anyone else as concerned about this as me??? It reminded me to much of last year when we had 1 minute and 20 seconds left on the clock in the first half.

The O comes in and instead of practicing a sense of urgency and seing if McCown can properly run a 2 minute drill we come out with two successive running plays????

The clock runs all the way down to 19 seconds before we even think about calling a timeout? Then and only then do we start to pass the ball? To little to late!

Sorry all but that screams a lack of game management skills yet again. Pre-season or not that is unacceptable IMO!

either that or a real lack of confidence in mccowan to run the 2 min o. either way, not to good.

I guess they could have been trying to cross up the d with a running play.

Then why not burn your time-outs after the running plays? so you have time to work the sidelines?

It was pure stupidity IMO!

You need to find out if you can have the confidence in McCown thats what pre-seasons for so thats no excuse either!

Yes, I thought they would be more aggressive too Shane. I guess Mac felt he didn't want to screw up the first half with a turnover leading to a Dallas score. That would be more understandable in the regular season...oh well.

I agree that Mac still has to improve his game management. The thing that leaps to my mind was the game in St. Louis last year.

The past couple of seasons has shown you to be right about the team's lack of game management skills. I also wish they'd have practiced it as there's no telling when they'll get another chance or when they'll NEED to use it.

Save your time EARLY so you have the chance to use it later. You run the risk of the other team using it if you don't keep the drive going, but you HAVE TO go for it at some point if you have any chance at winning.

Jim O - from fans that CARE: The team needs to improve its time/game management skills. If it's not discussed in the appropriate forums, please whisper in someone's ear. Thanks.

Mac wanted to win this game. I think he was more concerned about a quick turnover leading to a Dallas score. I know it shows somewhat of a lack of confidence in Mcown, but playing it safe and taking a lead into halftime builds confidence for the whole team. I think once the defense shows it can consistently produce as it did in this game, we will be more aggressive on offense.

I agree. Here is the way I look at this. What was Mac's goal on Saturday night? To win? Or work on different things offensively and defensively?

If he was trying to win the game first and foremost, then I guess I don't sweat how the clock was managed in the half. The problem is, this is the time of year to work on all facets of the game and this is the time to break the eggs when making the omlette. Take your wild risks now and not care about the outcome. This would have been the perfect opportunity to work on the drill and clock management since in their next 3 preseason games they may not have the same scenario set up like Saturday.

Looks like a missed opportunity...and it is a scenario where there were issues last year that could have been improved upon. The win is great (and I think important) BUT this oppotunities don't always present themselves.

On the positive side of the game management front, did anyone else notice how well set-up that reverse to Kasper was? Look at the game, and on about every second or third run, there's a fake on the end-around to a WR coming across the backfield. Spurrier did this a lot to us last season in the opener. This immured the D to the WR and got them used to seeing him coming across the field. When Sully or Geep finally pulled the trigger on the reverse, the Dallas D was totally unprepared for it.

This is the kind of forward-thinking, strategic play design and play-calling that has been missing for the past 2+ years.

I do agree that their "game managment" has been questionable the past few years. But I think this preseason game is about evaluating players not scoring points... (Sooo glad we won!)

Except you can have alot of very good players and if game management is poor, it can turn wins into losses...especially these days where so many games are much closer. Evaluate the players...try to win...but also work this game EXACTLY like you would a regular season game. Do that now and do it right so when the real games are happening, there is a calmness and precision to it.
