Most disturbing aspect of the "win" was the horrible pass protection. The Cardinals simply have to address offensive tackle in the off season.

But I will gladly take the win.

Watched the entire game, it was a very ugly win, but a win is win. 3rd quarter was a mightmare. I don't know but something seems off with Kurt. Hope I'm wrong about this. I think Matt could win for us next Sunday, give Kurt a rest till the play-offs start. Lucky "A**" Steelers (reminded) me of you know what.

Totally agree and you have to think Kurt knows it and is playing as such. Grimm needs to get our O line AND our running backs on the same page asap or the playoffs will be one and done.

As usual, Mitch, a great write-up!

I've accepted that it's just not easy to be a Cards fan. And a win is a win is a win and I will take it and celebrate.

Two things that I think helped get us the NFC-West title:

1) The bubble wrap on Fitz's knee. Who knew it was for more than just shipping packages securely?

2) When the game got tied up I went into the back room and found my official Anaheim Angels Rally Monkey. The one that won them their World Series. Got that little guy, brought him into the living room, took down a few Christmas decorations and put that thing up on the shelf next the T.V.

I believe in the power of the Rally Monkey!! ;)

Merry Christmas, Mitch, to you and your family and to everyone here!

Only message board posters can come up with these ideas and thoughts... I can't imagine a coach will be using a player "less" because he wants to save some money in the next off season for the organization instead of trying to win the best way he can with all his weapons.

Correct me if my memory is off but wasn't Boomer Esiason ticked at the Cards for not playing him and costing him a bonus?

Yep. He was sure the reason he was benched for Kent Graham with two games to go in the season was because he was about to hit an incentive.

That was the year Boomer had a couple of huge games for us. I was reminded of that yesterday on one of the highlight shows where they showed a graphic for 500+ passing yards in a game since 1990. Boomer was #2 on the list for 522 against Washington, a game we won in overtime.

Some random observations (more perceptions than insights and, therefore, possibly wrong):

- Really good teams - when handed a 17 - 0 lead near the end of the half, will then "take the easy points" and gradually expand that lead - to 20 - 0, 23 - 0 or even 27 - 0 and suck all the life out of their opponent (& their fans). When you're a QB, this means eating the ball or throwing it away in order to preserve a FG opportunity. Or not trying to thread the needle when you're already within easy 3-point range.

- Instead, we let the Lions (& their fans) back into the game. We also denied ourselves the opportunity to coast a little later in the game - resting nicked up starters and maybe even giving Leinart a chance to shake more rust off.

- Our near meltdown wasn't due to things like lack of intensity or focus but, instead "mind-set" (i.e. a lack of healthy paranoia). Our entire mindset nearing the end of the 1H should have been "let's put this away." "Take the 3." "Two hands on the ball." "They're going for the ball." "Protect the return lanes." "Run away from the punt if you can't field it cleanly." "No penalties!" "Gap discipline."

- Healthy paranoia can be "taught and learned." All we need to do is to talk about it when different game situations arise.

- Kurt's first half numbers were better than the crispness of his throws (it seemed to me that his receivers seldom caught the ball where they were supposed to but instead had to jump too high or twist around too much to snare them or too often weren't in a position to gain more yardage). He definitely eyeballed his receiver in the left flat early in the game and almost got pick-6'd.

- Antrel Rolle broke down perfectly to take on M Morris in the gap, but then got faked out of his proverbial jock. One of those times when he'd be better off immediately attacking Morris instead of waiting for him to make the first move.

- A play-calling nitpick - We kept insisting on running Beanie wide against a 9-wide technique which had the DE's playing super-wide. Beanie never had a chance. And on 3rd & short, we keep insisting on running Beanie or THT parallel to the LOS and vulnerable to shooting/pursuing LB's.

- DRC was spectacular, but this may have been McFadden's best game as a Cardinal.

- I still like what I see from #27.

- More often than not, Breaston seemed to be having a "bad hair day" (both as a receiver and returner - & not just the muff).

- There were one or two plays that Patrick made, but for every good one, there were a couple of ugly ones.

- What did Bryant Robinson say about that ref's mama? (Note - Forget about Watson being called for holding on the Morris 64 yard TD run, I swear I saw at the edge of the screen - a blue hand grabbing a white jersey just as Morris made his cut up into the hole).

- Did I hear that Gandy had surgery? Is he expected back for the playoffs? Thank goodness for Bridges, but either way, shouldn't Keith and/or H Johnson be getting more playing time "just in case?"

Best part of yesterday's win (& SF's loss) is that we can all enjoy the next two holiday weekends without worrying about clinching.

Have a happy, healthy, stress-free holiday everyone!

Well Antrell Rolle has turned out to be pretty good so I guess that you had to move on to someone else.

Rolle has improved and is a great playmaker. Still can't cover as well as I'd prefer, but he's a playmaker plain and simple. And, he's also improved his tackling skills. I hope the Cards can find a way to restructure his contract and extend him.

The main question is: will Whiz continue his Christmas Day full pads practice tradition? (Stay tuned)

Football is a game of emotion...and we saw what emotion can do for a 2-11 football team that in all reality in no way seemed capable of scoring 24 points versus a defending NFC Champion...at least not with the players they had in the game. Yet, the Lions did. They responded to their highly emotional head coach who probably trashed more than a few lockers at halftime...and suddenly these lame Lions roared to life, in part due to the emotion they were able to create, in part due to the fact that they started hitting the snot out of people, and in part due to the Cardinals' general carelessness.

Having given the lowly Lions their due...and the do deserve a great deal of credit...it's time to simply dwell on some of the current realities:

1. The Cardinals finished the season 6-2 on the road. This is a monumental step in the right direction, for a team that until the playoffs last year looked like they could never win anywhere East of St. Louis. It also should be pointed out that with Kurt Warner starting the Cardinals went 6-1 on the road.

2. In these road wins, the patterns were remarkable. Kurt Warner's outstanding first half performances in all of these wins were masterpieces. Once again today he had his team up 17-0, and it could have been more if Warner had been able to elude his forced fumble in the red zone at the end of the first half.

Just the same, following these tremendous first half performances, the pattern was for Warner to play ultra conservatively in the second half...which has never been his game, for, up until this year, Warner was about as greedy a stat hound as there ever was. Today the pattern was once agin in full HD display as Warner suddenly was not on the page with his WRs, and he started bailing out to his check downs way too early (at times because of pressure, but at other times because he just looks anxious, and honestly, he looks a tad afraid of getting hurt).

Warner's 3rd quarter forced throw into the end zone on 1st and 10, up 17-0, and the very first play after DRC's nifty 2nd interception that by all rights should have sealed this game away was the epitome of carelessness.

To Warner's credit...once he got his head back in the game after giving the Lion's the impetus for a shocking 17-0 run to tie the game...he made the right throws at the right time and looked like the Warner that led this team to the Halas Trophy last year.

3. With 2 games remaining the Cardinals have a very good chance to finish the season with double digit wins...when was the last time that happened? The 1970s?

4. The Cardinals are on the verge on clinching their second straight division title...this the first time since '74-'75.

Today's highlights:

1. Deuce Lutui's pancake block on Wells' 1st TD where he tossed the DT like he was ragdoll.

2. Fitz's tip drill TD.

3. Beanie's 12 yard TD and the 33 yard run to set up the game winner.

4. Boldin's nifty hitch pass TD...the game winner.

5. The defense closing out the game!...with a 4 and out. Rashad Johnson made the last play and played well in Matt Ware's place.

6. Darnell Dockett playing like a man possessed. How about his play on the critical 4th and 1 stop? Dockett had more than 5 highlight worthy plays in this game and, IMO, deserves to be in the Pro Bowl this year.

7. DRC's "lord's a leaping" interception in the first quarter. And his second of the game in the third quarter.

8. Levi Brown's downblocks on the power off-tackle plays....textbook. Dan Krieder's blocks...with Reggie Wells' pulls....textbook. Hey give these guys credit where credit is due. While the pass protection may not be as strong as it was lasy year and needs to improve, the run blocking is MUCH better this year.

9. Hightower's TD, where he was hardly touched.

10. Ben Patrick's nice long corner pass to the one yard line.

11. Adrian Wilson's and Clark Haggans' combined sack...both these veterans are playing very good football, and are keys to the defense.

12. Ben Graham's punts...have we ever seen anything like it?

13. Mike Nugent was right down the middle all day.

14. LSH continues to earn the team ST MVP (for non-kickers) Award...his KO return to set up the winning drive was very timely...just as timely as his recovery of the muffed punt in the first quarter.

15. Kenny Iwebema brought some good pressure on a few occasions.

I'm too happy (or is it relieved that I fell...how about you?) to list the lowlights...we saw them...there were plenty (a whole quarter full in the third quarter and many in the fourth)...basically the Cardinal defense played with several absentees this afternoon, such as Dansby (he's been playing hurt, but..), Campbell (hitting a little wall this time of year?) and Robinson (what a flat-out stupid and costly meltdown he had...for a veteran that was totally inexcusable and couldn't have come at a worse time). But the Cardinals' pass coverage was well conceived by Bill Davis and well carried through by the cover men. They and Dockett were the stars.

Yes, these Cardinals drive us crazy...

And no (to the opening question), I think these Cardinals deserve Christmas off. To me, a fitting reward for going 6-2 on the road.

And, lastly, yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

Merry Christmas to everyone at ASFN and to all of your families,

Your fellow fan and friend,

Mitch

Some passing comments: Dockett is the best player in the NFL at his position. He has a mix of speed, size, meanness, and agility to be the best. I have thought for some weeks he is the most crucial player for us to sign as soon as possible. He will not be cheap. When you are the best you will be paid like the best. What is your take Mitch on the signing of Dockett? Will the Cards pony up?

When you are down by a touchdown or less with 2-4 minutes to go I think Kurt Warner is one of the top three in the NFL to get you into the end-zone. I know of no one who can read defenses like he can and has the ability to get rid of the ball so fast. Was anyone really surprised when Kurt took us to the final TD?

Boldin is one tough man once he gets the ball in his hands. Unfortunately we cannot afford all the great or excellent receivers we have. I fear but expect we will lose Boldin.

When is the last time we had two young RB's who were so talented. Yes, fumbles are a problem but they can sure tote the ball with power and opens up the possibilities for Warner.

Is Whiz clamping down on Kurt throwing the ball or is Kurt going with the run on his own?

Fitz is still the top receiver in the NFL. Over 1000 yds 4 years in a row. He may be the best blocking receiver in football. Time and time again I see him fighting with a would be tackler to spring our runner free. He has it all and is a lock for the pro-bowl as is Dockett. Both Kurt and Fitz are a little dinged up. I assume they will take practice a bit easy as they along with Dockett are near irreplaceable.

Are the Bidwills going to do all they can (spend the available money) to keep the core players of this team together? They should be making some major money with the extra games the last year and this year. We still do not get the respect we should. I saw replays of the Pittsburgh game 7-8 times last night and they are 7-7. We win the West and I had to wait until the end of the ESPN sportscast to see about 1 minute of Cards game. I guess if you are from the west you just are not going to get the coverage the east coast teams do.

Could you imagine the meltdown that would have happened on this board if Leinart had been inserted in the game at half??? He would have been ripped to shreds

I suppose this mindset could have been a factor in Leinarts failures to move the offense when given the chance earlier this year as well. just sayin

Mitch---it is soooo good to see your post this week. I just got out of the hospital, but I did get to watch the game Sunday. You and I have VERY LITTLE TO DISAGREE ON THIS WEEK. I do think the guys deserve a Christmas present without big boy pads, but I would like to see Whiz put a little belly fire on the repeat offenders and back it up by setting them down a little time till they GET IT. That did work during the playoff run last year. All this year though the same people have resorted to the same screwups for the most part, and they do it over and over, and I am not talking about Gandy and Brown at OT either. They get waayy more blame than they deserve for what they are asked to do. NO OTHER TACKLES IN THE LEAGUE ARE ASKED TO PERFORM ON THE LONELY ISLAND THESE TWO GUYS ARE. They have played well indeed when give the same help that other teams give their OT's. I also have notice the road grading play of both Lutui and Brown lately, and I just don't understand why we don't run behind them more. They force Beanie to the left and pull Lutui to block into the hole, but Wells, and Gandy/replacement are too often still sitting there with their men unmoved and Deuce just ends up filling the hole up and forcing Beanie outside.

Strange, but I also think that I am seeing a different Warner out there, and part of it is the conservative play in the second half of games. The other part is the hurt part----I think Doug hit it on the head when he pointed out that Kurt took that hip pointer in the second to last series in the Minnessota game. Although he came back for the kneel down series to end the game, it was obvious that it hurt him to kneel and get back up.

Then getting slammed again the the first series on third down against the 9ers on the same hip really showed. I really do think that if given the same choice again, Whiz would have set hm and brought in Leinart. Win or lose, Kurt is too valuable to have play that way. He may have done more to convince Kurt not to come back next year than any of us will ever know by putting him back in the game when he was sick to death on the bench, and they had Leinart warmed up and ready. Since that time, there has been something missing in his demeanor on the field. He almost looks like he doesn't want to be there anymore. His actions, (and reads), are not as quick, nor as confident as before, and the doubts seem to be creeping in more and more often now. The play shows it too, with his holding too long, and fumbling, and with throwing the int's.

I am sorry to say that I don't think we are as good a team as we were last year when we entered the play offs. We have better talent, and better depth than last year, but we are playing hurt in too many places, and Kurt is one of them. If he can't get his mind right and his confidence back, we will not go far into the playoffs.

We are also hurt badly on t he defensive front seven. Two of those injuries are critical and will not heal with a week or two of reduced play. Gerald Hayes has got to be hurting terribly, (probably as Doug said, with a disk problem). He will not heal for a very long off-period of time, and maybe not even with surgery. Back troubles like that are tricky.

Dockett is playing with two partly separated shoulders, YET HE IS PLAYING LIKE A MAN POSSESSED. He is not able to hit and drive anymore, and coupling that injury with Hayes' injury is leaving us open to a good running game. Dockett can still wrap up and tackle, (not so Hayes), but Dockett can no longer hit and drive his man back, and is giving up a body length on every tackle now. That is becoming a killer when he is alone on the tackle. He is playing with the heart of a lion, but he can't do what he does best, stuff the run in the backfield, or at least at the line of scrimmage. Couple that with Ware's injury, with the reduced performances of both Berry and Okeafor and the lack of willingness for DRC and sometimes for Rolle to hit in the secondary, and I just don't us going deep into the playoffs this year. I hope I am wrong, but I will not be surprised if we go out early this year. I also will not be surprised if Warner dicided to hang it up this year, even if we don't win the SB. I think he came real close last year.

I am still hoping for a couple of good breaks along the way, as we sure haven't had many of those along the way during the regular season this year. But I won't be getting down on anybody
playing in the Big Red this year if we do not go all the way. While I believe that stupid mistakes can be overcome, serious injury is a whole nother thing to deal with, and we have that in spades this year. I am not giving up on this team, because they haven't yet. I am just not prepared to get real positive about our chances from here on out. Last year we were unhurt, this year we are not. Big difference. You can only overcome so much handicap, and this just might be too much.
