Anyone seen this yet?

Zack Braff (from the show Scrubs) wrote and directed it. Danny Devito was i THINK one of the producers.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie. It was kind of like a self discovery movie, but it had hilarious comedic moments, too. Clever direction I thought, too. Natalie Portman was pretty decent, and I'm not a big fan of hers either.

I recommend this movie, for sure :)

Im lost. I never heard of half the movies in this forum. Dont know the actors either. Anyway, Ive always wondered this. What makes for good direction? I mean im not totally out of the movie loop, but I just dont see what is different from one movie to the next.

I dont know the technical meaning of it - but to me, good direction is if the movie flows from cut to cut.. the way the camera looks... i dunno, stuff like that

the cuts from scene to scene probably has more to do with the editor than with the director, but a good director will also have the editing in mind when he's shooting the scenes making it easier for the editor to do his/her job, and may or may not have a hand in the editing room.

Probably in its most simplistic explanation, a director is to a film as a coach is to a football team. They move their respective teams toward a goal--some more successfully than others. Directors interpret scenes from the screenplay, and coaches determine which plays to run from the playbook.

If you put two coaches in the exact same situation, you may get two completely different results. Same thing with directors--give them the exact same screenplay and you may get two completely different movies.

Chaplin or Cheesey could probably explain it better, though.

See I still dont get it. When I do watch a movie I like to enjoy it. It seems in order to notice what you are saying you basically focus on something other than the movie. Like watching the background scence or something. Heck I dunno, I believe they are different and all, but I am the type of person who would say, "just play the dam movie, get these intro credits over with". I watch movie for the actual story I guess lol.

Gee, have you ever watched a movie you didn't enjoy? That might be because the direction was bad. I'll bet you loved Resivior Dogs. If Tarrintino wasn't sitting in the directors chair for that one, it could well have been a piece of crap.

My point is, you don't have to pay attention to the direction, but a good (or a bad) director does make a huge difference in the film. The film is largely a product of that person's vision.

Hey Kate, finally saw this movie a few nights back...

Wife and I LOVED it...great, funny movie...and like you said, a sort of "self-discovery" movie.

Portman was great, and really acted different than I've seen her before (especially after seeing Closer). She was really good.

I also like Zach Braff, and I really like that he took a long time to write this one, and then directed it as well, plus starred in it. He's a great actor, I love him in Scrubs...but he was just different here.

Good story, good characters, actors (Bilbo from Lord of the Rings is in it), etc.
