I don't see Seattle trading up, but with the way that the Smith contract is structured (with Seattle not really being on the hook for all of the $35 million per year), going with a QB with the no. 5 pick would not surprise me in the least.

This is my view as well. It is possible that they fall in love with a specific QB, but I don't think they trade up from 5.

They also have a 90 year old coach who likely wants to make another push before he retires.
if he can rebuild the Lynch + Legion of Boom dynamic he had when Russ was young, he probably feels he can make that push with Geno Smith.
Pete is smart enough to know he isn't winning anything with Geno Smith at QB making 25mil per year. His legacy would benefit more if he left the franchise with a young and dynamic franchise QB.

It all depends if you view the top three QBs as interchangeable. If you do, you stay. If you don't, you move up to 1.

It will be interesting to see what they do, if anything.

I think Pete thinks he can win playing his old model.

Great defense and running game and some timely plays from the QB.

youre giving Pete a lot of credit.

you really think his legacy as a shehawk means more to him than his legacy as a coach??
I would bet money Pete doesnt give a damn if seattle ever wins another game after he is gone.

Trading up to the #1 spot is rare so who knows.

I just know there are some mixed views regarding Slower Kyler Murray aka Tiny Teddy Bridgewater aka Black Mac Jones and how far a QB like that can take you.
I don't really see any special traits with Bryce Young.

If they were smart they would trade this years picks for next years. Then trade up to #1 for Maye? That's if Maye is going to be the next best thing at QB. They have a QB for this year & they will be competitive but will still need a long term solution at QB.

I agree. I think Houston is the one that should really be doing this.

This is a sharp take.
I know it is, but here is what I see:

1. VERY SMALL. I think it's hilarious that people are glossing over this fact after hearing many bash Murray for his lack of size. Murray looks thicker than Young, which demonstrates better overall muscle mass.

2. Young won't go to a team as talented as Alabama is. Young's number went from outstanding to only pretty good once the talent level dipped at Alabama.

3. While I love Young's pocket presence, He doesn't have any physical traits that are outstanding. He moves decently, but I wouldn't call him a top level athlete. He's small. He doesn't have a big time arm.

I just don't see a special player. I see a good player who played with a lot of really good to special players throughout his career. If I was in the Texans organization, I would be scared to draft him, because the other guys have some pretty pronounced issues as well.

Stroud would probably be my pick because he throws the ball (number one trait of a QB!) so well, but ghosts of QBs past from Ohio State and his lack of top end mobility are a concern with him.

Richardson just has so much damn work he needs to do so I would steer away from him. I think Richardson is a better fit on a team with a good OL, good RBs, and good WRs (Carolina?), a team he wouldn't have to be the guy to win games immediately essentially.

Levis has too much uneven tape to take top ten right now in my view, but I like his athletic profile and he throws the ball well for the most part.

I like Maye more than any QB in college football for awhile. Super talented kid.

Overall I'm completely agnostic on this QB group. I think, at best, one will pan out to be a solid starting NFL QB.

Kyler Murray is significantly more talented than any in this group.
I personally grade CJ Stroud as a better prospect than Kyler Murray was. I also have Richardson and Kyler as very close and I probably lean AR. I skew against size outliers and the success of Josh Allen and Lamar have changed my view on accuracy a bit.

My issue with size is that a higher percentage of abnormally short QBs (under 6'0) have been successful than abnormally tall QBs (over 6'5).

That tells me height is actually overrated, or one can infer height is overrated.

Fields looked much better at Ohio State, and has looked substantially worse in the NFL. I think you're underrating the struggle QBs like Stroud have transitioning to the NFL, and how historically Ohio State QBs have struggled in the NFL.

Murray had talent at OU, but nowhere near the talent Stroud has had.

What data is that based on?

I disagree that height is overrated. I think it has less to do with batted balls and more to do with seeing the field which is more important as QBs are coming to the NFL with less experience and aren't taught full-field progression reads as much.

I also believe Stroud is a much better passer than Fields was his last year in college.

I listen to what Kurt Warner says on this topic: NFL QBs don't generally see over linemen, they see around them.

I think Bryce Young has some Drew Brees in him. That’s nothing more than an intuition hawt take so don’t at me…

It’s hard to evaluate recent Ohio St QB’s given the amount of talent around them. Same goes for the Lincoln Riley QB’s.

Anthony Richardson has to go to Seattle or Detroit and sit. If he’s thrown into the fire right away it will be ugly. It’s crazy to think had they not extended Kyler and everything else fell into place the same way last season we’re likely talking about these QB’s from a much different perspective.
