Georgia basketball's season is over after suffering a 89-68 defeat to the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the first-round of March Madness. Georgia made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005, but Georgia never had much of a chance after it got off to a disastrous start against Gonzaga.
Georgia trailed 27-3 in the first half due to poor shooting and turnovers. Georgia never managed to cut the Gonzaga lead to single digits. Gonzaga held a 20-plus point lead for much of the second half and did not let up after their fast start.
Georgia freshman Asa Newell scored 20 points, but it was too little, too late. Newell is likely headed to the NBA draft. Georgia will rebuild for the 2025-2026 season. However, Georgia still accomplished a lot this year and helped turn the program around. Georgia's loss to Gonzaga does not define UGA's season. Yet, it was still a disappointing way for Georgia to go out.
"We've just got a really special thing going with our culture, with our connectivity," said White. "These guys have really strong relationships with one another. These guys got it done. And I hate it for them that it's over. These two guys next to me accomplished a lot, and they got Georgia to the NCAA Tournament. We got the highest seed that we've gotten in a long, long time. Broke some records, ended some streaks, started some streaks, you name it. "
Georgia broke one of the longest March Madness droughts in the country, but still did not secure an NCAA Tournament win. UGA has not won a March Madness game since 2002. Ending that streak will be one of Georgia's goals next season.
"These guys have accomplished a ton, and they should be proud. And they've laid a foundation," added White.
"Not the ending that we wanted but man this season has been fun," said one fan via social media. "Georgia Basketball made the NCAA tournament and we were ranked in the top 25 earlier in the year. Yes little victories but man was it fun. The future is bright and can’t wait to see what’s NEXT!"
