EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants bet their future that Eli Manning is the NFL's next great quarterback. Hopefully, he'll prove worthy because the price they paid on Saturday was exorbitant.

VIDEO: Eli much happier in NY

The Giants traded the fourth pick overall in the draft (quarterback Philip Rivers), a third-round pick this year and first- and fifth-round picks next year to the San Diego Chargers for Manning.

"I don't consider that the store," Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi said of the deal.

"We all had the unanimous opinion this was a special quarterback, and you don't get a chance very many times, for decades, to select someone like him," Accorsi added.

The trade also all but guaranteed that quarterback Kerry Collins' career with the Giants will end either in the very near future or after the 2004 season at the latest.

Collins is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $7 million in salary, with an $8.95 million salary cap value.

"Obviously I'm disappointed it has to end, but that's life in the NFL," Collins said. "If I am here this year, I will give them everything I have."

After this year, Manning will be running the show.

"What I saw in Manning was a classic prospect," said Accorsi, who also drafted John Elway and Bernie Kosar. "Size, arm, tremendous athletic ability and feet, poise, class. Probably more important than the obvious physical attributes that you have to have is the fact that he lifted his team.

"I always looked for that in a quarterback where he made the athletes around him better," Accorsi added. "I thought this year in particular, he made his teammates play better and that's an element that a lot of the top quarterbacks have had."

Neither the Giants nor the Chargers would discuss how the draft day deal was consummated.

The teams talked about swapping picks in recent weeks, but the possibility of a deal seemingly improved earlier this week when Manning indicated he would not play for the Chargers.

The Chargers still took Manning with the first pick, a choice that caused boos from the gallery at Madison Square Garden.

After Oakland took offensive tackle Robert Gallery and Arizona grabbed Larry Fitzgerald with the third choice, the Giants took almost their entire 15 minutes on the clock before taking Rivers.

"When the No. 1 player on the board is within striking distance you, as a franchise, exercise every option to get him," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.

Manning is already being touted in the same vein as Elway, who developed into one of the game's greats after being traded by Baltimore to Denver. Elway also balked at playing for the team that drafted him.

"Eli is a great talent, a guy who can carry the Giants for a lot of years," said Collins, who led the Giants to a Super Bowl appearance in 2000. "On that level I can certainly understand why they would want to take him and I will do whatever I can to help him this year."

A holder of 45 game, season and career records at Mississippi, Manning hit 829 of 1,363 passes for 10,119 yards, 81 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.

Manning also has a pedigree that inspires confidence. He is the son of NFL great Archie Manning and the brother of Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

Eli Manning is the first quarterback the Giants have taken with a first-round pick since Phil Simms in 1979. Simms led the Giants to their first Super Bowl title in 1986. "I think he will be ready very shortly," Coughlin said of Eli Manning. "There is a learning curve, a process everyone has to go through. You are going to pay the price." The Giants already have.
