According to Howard Balzer on 1380 sports talk....Glover just inked a 3 year deal with the Rams....I was hoping we would look at him as apposed to bringing Davis back.

How can they sign someone if Free Agency hasn't "started"

FAs to be arent FAs until their contracts expires at the deadline so they cant sign with anyone until they no longer have a contract.

But players that were cut such as Glover dont have a contract so they can sign with anyone at any time.

With this signing and with Hovan re-uping with Tampa...the DT market got a bit thinner. I still think we address this in the Drafts 2nd Rd but a Vet widebody next to DD is really a must have this season. Davis may have to be given a bigger contract than he is worth.

My guess is that Davis has been determined to be "too expensive" and therefore expendable. I can see Kemoeatu being signed and us taking a DT in round 2 as the way to "shore" up the NT hole.

He's a big dude but I noticed he was listed as playing on the left side of the Ravens DLine where Dockett plays for the Cardinals. Normally the big run stuffers play on the right side of the dline. What type of defense do the ravens run and what was his role in that D?

Don't they run the 3-4? Or has that ship sailed?

3-4. he's their noseguard. as of now he's my #1 target. we're obviously not going to upgrade the offensive line through fa. i'll be shocked if we substantially upgrade the rb spot. so i'm hoping our other largest need, stopping the run, is where we focus.

Graves and Denny have said that the two top priorities for the Cards were to improve the run and to stop the run. Stopping the run to me would mean getting a run stuffing DT.

Got it. Apparently nfl.com/depthcharts lists Suggs as RDE rather than OLB. Which moves the other 3 dlinemen over one spot.

The talent drops off pretty considerable after Kemoeatu unless you want to bring in Ted Washington to die on our practice field

Heh, this wouldn't be without it's charm.... This move should give the front office even more incentive to shore up the interior of the line; shoring up the exterior wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I don't think they ran a 3-4 this season. They had some looks, but mostly they ran the 4-6 this year. It was all the pre-season talk last year.

Rams have three DT 1st round draft picks on their roster - Ryan Pickett, Damione Lewis & Jimmy Kennedy. Glover kind of crowds this picture.

Glover's signing thins out the FA pool, but you've got to figure that at least one of the other dudes (considered busts by some) are destined for the pool thereby "thickening" it.

One other point of info - Pickett (310 lbs) and Lewis (301 lbs) have 5 years each under their belts. Kennedy (320 lbs) has 3.

Glover (who weighs 282 lb) has 10.

Davis becomes expendable when we find someone to replace him. Until then he is not someone we want to lose.

Is the run D really that big of an issue? Yes, the Card's had some trouble stopping the run but is it possible that a lot of that was due to opposing teams not having to pass the ball to win? Granted, it would be nice to have the 85 Bears out there to shut everything down but if the offense steps it up next year and put's pressure on the opposing teams to try and score/take chances then I think the defense will start getting more turnovers and look better overall.

The Cards were not able to stop teams from running for first downs on 3rd and 6. The Cards were in the middle of the pack in rushing average, but last in the league in rushing TDs and in the bottom 10 in terms of rushes over 20 yards.

It is a problem, and was a problem last year, but I think you might be right that people are probably unnecessarily freaking out about it.

Not to make an excuse... but I will.

Many times (or at least it seemed that way) the big plays came after a penalty on the Cards. Some were argued here about being bogus calls as well. I would imagine that those calls played a roll in the break-down of the defensive play or offensive play.

The reverse could be argued as well. The Cards come back and score only to have ST break down and allow for a big play!

Actually I found this to be surprising to me when I looked it up. We were ranked 4th in the league in 3rd down conversion % D and 9th in 4th down conversion % D.

Yeah, I was surprised that the Cards YPC allowed number was so low. A lot of the Cards' losses have to be on settling for field goals on offense and allowing short fields on special teams.

The numbers seem to suggest that the Cards are closer than we think. When I get a moment, I'll see what FootballOutsiders' conclusions are.
