Here's what you should be saying to the Cards fans...it's a little ironic that the Cards had Pujols on a low contract for years, and when he was 31ish, they traded him because they saw the decline coming and didn't want to pay for it. With Goldy they just went against what they historically do.

Yes and no, right now the Cards are renting Goldy for a playoff push year before they have their own FA issues.

Maybe they agree to a long term contract, maybe they don’t.

Puj

Pujols was a free agent. The Cardinals offered him a 5 year contract but the Angels gave him a 10 year contract with an additional 10 year "personal services" contract. He will be 39 before the season starts and still has 3 more years on the original 10 year deal. The last 7 years with the Angels have been his worst stats as a player. The Angels got screwed on that deal. I would have loved for him to retire a Cardinal but we can't compete (and shouldn't) with that sort of deal.

Goldschmidt has 1 year left and will also be looking for his last big pay day. The D-backs got something for him, where the Cardinals did not get anything for Pujols.
That's right ..he was a FA...but they still let him walk, because it's not in their DNA to pay huge $$ to older vets.

D backs just got HOSED! LOOK AT THE TRADE

Catcher that made it to the bigs twice and batted .041 and only 2 hits
Pitcher with 2 of 3 losing seasons who averages over 3.5 ERA and only 8 SO's per game (and that's not in the bigs)
an okay infielder
and a pick (they would have already have gotten if they lost Gold in FA)

Feel sorry for you D Back fans ...advice - change teams

So, we could have kept Goldy one more year, probably a losing season, and get a draft pick....or....trade him now, get that pick now, and get 3 players that may, or may not, work out.. and still have a losing season.

Frankly, they Dbacks did the right thing.

Or wait till the trade deadline to find a desperate team. But that is really risky. Considering how goldy got off to the slow start last season.

My biggest problem is the reports that we had better offers on the table (Yankees, Astros, possibly Rays) and turned them down only to settle for this steaming file of crap.

So their offering was likely worse.

See my post in the other thread. There were still multiple other more attractive options, including keeping Goldy for another year and getting a higher compensatory pick.

This trade is the reverse equivalent of the Boston Celtics trading Kyrie Irving to the Suns right after the 2018 draft for Dragan Bender, Brandon Knight, Troy Daniels and a second round pick.

I don't think it will be that bad.

Didn't ARZ also get a compensatory draft pick in the deal along with international pool money? That makes it 8 picks in the Top 100 in the 2019 draft, so we get the compensatory pick for Goldschmidt a year early. No guarantee ARZ will make good use of the international pool money but maybe they have some luck there.

They would have received a higher compensatory pick in the 2020 draft if Goldy just walked after 2019. No international pool money in this deal (not that it matters).

From how long ago?? Yes, I always wished that somehow, Goldy would remain. However, once it became clear that ownership was 100% committed to a drastic payroll cut, keeping Goldy was never gonna be a realistic option. Therefore, Hazen had no other option but to trade him now.
Goldy already took a discount to keep some stability. Cards have no problem extending him out a few more years--they were already thinking about trading for Harper.

St.L is a baseball first city. The park isn't a mausoleum, they draw 3 million a year, and they don't pull Towers - like F-ups. They traded one of their best players to Oakland so he could be close to his dying mother.

As.for the DBs, back to the drawing board with a depleted farm system and even less offense.

Diamondbacks' Andy Young: Dished to Arizona
Rotowire 1D ago
Young was traded from the Cardinals to the Diamondbacks along with Luke Weaver, Carson Kelly and a draft pick in exchange for Paul Goldschmidt.

Young, a 24-year-old infielder with 2018 experience at second base and third base, is the distant third piece in this package from a real-life perspective, as he is 24 years old and only has 37 games at Double-A under his belt. That said, his recent performance has been excellent -- he slashed .319/.395/.556 with nine home runs in 152 plate appearances at Double-A and followed that up by hitting .301/.416/.521 with three home runs in 20 Arizona Fall League games. It is possible that the 2016 37th-round pick is a late bloomer, and the trade really gives him an opportunity to prove that, as it will be a lot easier to break into the infield mix in Arizona than it would have been in St. Louis.

Diamondbacks' Luke Weaver: Sent to Arizona
Rotowire 12H ago
The Cardinals traded Weaver, Carson Kelly, Andy Young and a 2019 Competitive Balance Round B draft pick to Arizona in exchange for Paul Goldschmidt on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Weaver started 25 games in 2018, but he was moved to a bullpen role a couple times throughout the season and wound up pitching in just two outings across the last four weeks. He finished the campaign with a 4.95 ERA and 1.50 WHIP to go along with an 8.0 K/9, which was noticeably down from his 10.7 mark the previous year. Looking ahead, the 25-year-old should have a place in Arizona's rotation, especially following the departures of Patrick Corbin and Clay Buchholz. Weaver will be under team control for the next five years after making his debut with St. Louis in 2016.

Diamondbacks' Carson Kelly: Dealt to D-backs
Rotowire 12H ago
Kelly was traded from the Cardinals to the Diamondbacks along with Luke Weaver, Andrew Young and a draft pick in exchange for Paul Goldschmidt.

This is excellent for Kelly's fantasy value, as he was relatively blocked in St. Louis, but now joins a team that had Alex Avila and John Ryan Murphy as the incumbents behind the dish. Kelly's defense is generally regarded as above average, but his stock has dipped in the past calendar year, as he logged a 120 wRC+ at Triple-A in 2017 and followed that up with a 107 wRC+ in a return trip to the Pacific Coast League in 2018. He has a .154 average and zero home runs in 131 MLB plate appearances, but has a chance to be relevant as a low-power/decent-average option this season, particularly in two-catcher leagues.

And the way he has hit, or rather hasn't, that's about 100 too many.

What, in your opinion, is the reason Kelly can manage to hit in AAA and fails to in MLB?

What’s have you seen, specifically, either in the video or the metrics that backs this position?
