I heart Bob Brenly.
Is that the Bob Brenly who used 135 different batting orders in his last season as D'backs manager? Nobody was allowed to get comfortable within a role. Every batter swung for the fences.

Originally I thought Brenly's credentials were outstanding.

Former National League catcher -- handler of pitchers. Former announcer -- a communicator.

Hit over 20 HR's in a season. Stole over 20 bases within a season. Versatile. But had to work hard for success. (Not to mention his three errors at 3B within an inning with the Giants.)

What we didn't know was that he knew how to communicate with only the Press or a microphone. His ballplayers learned what he had to say about them through the Press.

And Bob Melvin was his Bench Coach. With the same goofy everyday-a-different-lineup now.

I had high hopes for Bob Brenly as a Manager and, despite Johnson, Schilling and Gonzo carrying him to a World Championship, Bob Brenly was a failure as Manager with the D'backs.

Isn't that why Brenly remained in the Cubs broadcast booth, while Lou Pinella was brought in to manage?
