Will be missed and I am very sorry to see him go. This ownership situation just sucks.

nothing to do with the ownership (although the situation does suck) - some just haven't gotten the memo that unless you are an elite goalie, you're not going to get paid a crazy salary .... just good goalies seems to pop up all the time and position is devalued

russians seem to have more of an issue because they are so loved back home and the KHL will pay crazy money they think they should get it over here .... no team with a cap would be smart to pay him $6+M per year .... given the cap situation in philly I have no idea what they are thinking

Last year Nabokov wanted that kind of money as well ... got paid in the KHL, flamed out and then was trying to navigate waivers back to the NHL

SJ on the other hand signed Antti Niemi & Antero Nittymaki .... Nitty cost $2m per year for 2 years ... Niemi was a 1 year deal for $2M deal

They then extended niemi for 4 years at 3.8M per (and will probably move Nitty)

With the way this thing is moving he would be doing well to get the $4.5M he made last year extended out

FA goalies this next year include Giguere, Vokoun, Bryz, Leclaire, Roloson & Smith, Hedberg, Osgood, Turco, Conklin, Budaj, Theodore, Lalime & Emery

This team simply doesn't have a deep roster of affordable talent where they can splurge on a goalie ... they need a solid goalie at a good price while boosting up the rest of their team

Maloney knows what he is doing

Signing Bryz for $5.7M a year until he's 40 is absurd considering he's merely "very good" rather than elite. The Flyers had to trade Mike Richards to LA (booooo) and Jeff Carter to Columbus to fit him under the cap.

Totally absurd. Yes, the Flyers need a good goalie, but not at the expense of the rest of their team.

I know no Flyers fan that is happy about this.

I think bryz may have some troubles in large part to what jersey just mentioned

He wasn't exactly media friendly out here and would bristle a bit when he was struggling or any criticism went his way

The flyers fan base is a pretty knowledgeable one - but very, very demanding ..... demanding of performance, demanding of time, demanding of style of play ....... if you go through struggles, you better at least do it with an attitude and a sneer

Will be interesting to see how he reacts when he hits rough patches in the season, which happen to all players. The fans are going to be tough, especially if carter and richards are performing and their replacements aren't.

The flip to that is if he wins he can be king of the city and that fanbase has been goalie starved for so long

We haven't had this type of caliber goalie since Hextall's first few years and before that, Pelle Lindberg, God rest him. The problem is, Bryz is coming into a place that holds goalies up to Bernie Parent, and that's unfair. Bernie was special and just stupid good. However, trading Carter and Richards away is risky. One or the other but both, wow. The rumor is that we're going to try to get Stamkos but it's going to be costly and I don't believe we can get that done. Brad Richards is another name but that too might be too expensive. As for Bryz's contract, I hear that it involves a 3 year our clause.

Bryz's contract is highly front loaded, he'll be making $10M next season (which makes him the highest paid player in the whole NHL I believe), but it drops to $2.5M and $1.25M the last two years. However, in the NHL, the salary cap hit is based on the average salary, so all nine years he will count for $5.7M against the cap. Philly may have some trickery in mind by front loading the contract, if they buy out his contract somewhere in the future, only a percentage counts against the cap. Also, he could hypothetically bolt for Russia once his salary dwindles which would remove his cap hit. I don't think the Flyers are counting on him being around for all 9 seasons.

Wow, this seems really risky to me. I mean, I don't totally subscribe to a "goalies grow on trees" philosophy, and obviously you need a hot goalie to win the Cup. But for every Tim Thomas this year, there's Tim Thomas last year.
