Guys, you should check out the draft video on Suns.com. It shows the inner workings of the draft room--some really cool stuff we don't normally see. There was a 2nd round offer from the Lakers that was there, and Steve Kerr talking to SA about making the Dragic pick. Very cool stuff.

So the argument about Sarver being cheap doesn't really carry much weight, as he is spending more money that he needs to, and doing it right now. Does it?

How so? He's paying 1.2 million when he won't have to pay any second round draft picks for two years now (depending on when this Goran Kid comes over...if ever).

Are you really saying that Sarver isn't unbelievably cheap? This drop in the bucket hardly redeems him from the litany of first round picks that were sold or players and GMs that he got rid of to save money.

What I am saying is that he can shed the "cheap" label for at least this draft. He is spending more money than he needs to.

Actually, the video from the war room made it sound like we're only giving SA 500k, not 1.2m.

Dick isn't going to shed any labels for a while, once the perception is accepted by the mass population (casuals, grandmothers, national media) it's going to be hard to change, it is going to take several extrodinary moves to right that label. A few moves in the second round and not selling your first round pick might as well be a tree in the forest.

Very nice stuff.

While I was watching the video, I saw Igor is in our staff. Is he going to help a little if Goran wants to come over.

I will never forgive Sarver for making the worst trade of all time. Kurt Thomas and future first round picks for cash. Thomas, a hustler and hard worker who didn't want much money gets traded for absolutely nothing. WTF

Did the Suns even get cash in return?

I'm sure you conveniently forget that Colangelo did the exact same thing with Googs.

Yeah but I thought when we traded Googs he was done? He did nothing to contribute to the team he was traded to. Kurt still had something left in the tank and can contribute. Googs was dead weight wasn't he or do you mean something else?

Found mention of a trade on Sportingnews.com....sort of...

8. San Antonio Spurs traded the rights to F Goran Dragic to Phoenix Coyotes for the rights to F Malik Hairston, a future second-round pick and cash considerations.

:lmao:

Coyotes? Forward? At least the spelled his name correct...

He had a little left in the tank. He wasn't as good as KT was at the time, but that's besides the point though. If you can't forgive Sarver, then you shouldn't be able to forgive Jerry for doing the same thing just a few years earlier.

OK, now I gotcha. I guess though that would depend on your view of those players at that time. Shedding dead weight if that is your opinion (it is mine about Googs) is much more acceptable then shedding a guy in Kurt who could clearly still contribute is different.

Kurt came back to haunt us later. So I get that view.

I hear ya. But shedding KT if he were an all star for example wouldn't make him any less cheap. It would make him less conpetent though.

HELLO!

Googs had one year left on an awful contract and he never even played anymore. The Suns had to bribe someone to take it away because they were selling the team.

Kurt Thomas had one year left on a decent contract (8 million). The Suns bribed someone to take away while they were competing for a championship and he was their best interior defender.

Here's the KICKER: The picks we gave away with Googs were CONDITIONAL:

Utah will receive the least favorable of Phoenix’s two first-round picks in the 2004 NBA Draft, either Phoenix's or New York’s selection, which was acquired from the Knicks in a trade on January 5. The second conditional first-round pick was also acquired from New York and is protected through 2010.

I like the trade because the Suns appear to have done their homework and had the guts to go get the guy they wanted.

Goran's consenting to a secret workout tells me he's interested. He has Nash's agent and will have certainly been fully informed on the nature of his opportunity here.

Very few second round picks contribute anyway but teams occasionally discover a very good player. May Goran be the latter.

heh Gambo just said they would have picked him at 15 if Lopez went to GS. I know Gambo was right on with the picks but I find that concept worse than anything I have ever heard of before.

The way I see it,

Kerr was brought in to slowly but surely implement the same personnel that exists with the San Antonio Spurs.

Lopez is a Oberto-type. During the work outs they would of solely focused him on a couple of situations in which obviously Lopez did well at. I'm assuming defending the pick and roll or switching in defense then able to make a rebound and outlet pass.

Not to mention the energy and size, I think this is definitely a planned pick, Rush would of been the first choice, obviously swingman, defender who can shoot. But Lopez was a good pick for the Sun's need and tactic plans.

If the rumours are true that Dragic would of been the Suns 3rd choice at 15th if both Lopez and Rush were gone. I am assuming they see a Ginobli-esque player in him. I admit I only saw a few videos, but he had the same uncanny motion and agility Ginobili has, the ability to finish off with opposite hands in traffic or off contact, you could of sworn that was Ginobili in his first year if you werent told it was Dragic.

Shooting wise, he is also similar to a Spur... Parker. Anyone here remember how mediocre Parker was? I remember Suns Spurs series, Marbury days, Parker was very inconsistent with that shot. Now? You cannot leave him, as he showed he has improved dramatically.

I think with Porter, Kerr definitely wants to go the Spur's way in terms of execution, but keep the uptempo rhythm in the offense, as long as Nash is there anyways.

I'm really hoping Dragic comes next season, he'd only reach his potential if he gets the chance to play a lot so it has to start ASAP.

HI. THANKS FOR THE YELLING!

So lets be clear here, are we mad that the trade happened in the first place, or because the picks were unprotected? I doubt that there are many would say, "This would have been a great trade, if we had only protected the picks." The Googs trade was bad, and they were conditional.

So I watched the video recommended by Chaplin, the best part by far is when they made the deal with SA and told them to pick this guy. During the celebration Kerr looks at Dick and says, I didn't even have to give them the 750. Dick says "whoo hoo let's go to cabo."

Btw, I also belive Kerr is in total control, no one said a word other than Griff and when Kerr cheered they all did the Austn Powers moment and cheered with him. I am actually starting to really like him as a GM. Cabo Dick not so much.

Agreed! How can someone be so obtuse as to compare the two. The KT trade bit the championship contender suns in the a**, googs was dead weight on a bad team.

Come on gimp, who's calling who obtuse???

We are comparing the two, because the financial aspects of the trades are the same. We are talking about the "cheap" mantra of Sarver, not whether his trades made sense.

Yea but it's as if he didn't want to work for the starting job.
He saw the competition of Oberto, Horry, Bonner, and Elson and wanted no part of it.
While in Houston his only competition was Hayes and a 1 footed Yao Ming.

so you think scola didnt think he could compete with "flop berto the defensive turnstyle", "grandpa hipcheck" horry, "stiff" bonner, and "empty headed" elson, thats pathetic, LOL. A competitor like scola know he's better than those guys. Your first description of how he didnt want to challenge TD for the job was better excuse, though it was silly as well because oberto is the weak link. Scola knew he wasnt a center and yao wasnt injured when he went. I'd take chuck hayes, carl landry, mutombo over those spurs anyday.

More likely the spurs use 3 guys for 80% of the offense, anyone else is furniture. If Im scola, I dont want to go to a team like that, either.
