Gordon earned his reputation as a gym rat at Mount Vernon (N.Y.) High and then at the University of Connecticut, where he helped the Huskies to the NCAA title two months ago. It wasn’t unusual for Gordon to trek from his dorm room to Gampel Pavilion late at night or before the sun was coming up to shoot jumpers.
"I’ve always worked extra on my game," Gordon said. "It’s something I love to do."
It’s one of the reasons why Gordon has risen from the early projections as a mid-first-roundpick to a top-10 selection in Thursday’s NBA draft (7 p.m., ESPN). It seems every day that Gordon’s name moves up in the mock drafts that are flooding the Internet these days.
Another reason is how well Gordon has done in individual workouts for pro teams. The muscular 6-foot-2, 195-pound Gordon has particularly impressed Chicago and Philadelphia. The Bulls have the third pick in the draft, the 76ers pick ninth.
UConn coach Jim Calhoun isn’t surprised that Gordon has thrived during the workouts. It was Calhoun who predicted as much when Gordon announced he was leaving UConn after his junior season just weeks after the Huskies defeated Georgia Tech in the NCAA title game April 5 in San Antonio.
"I keep getting calls from GMs saying what an incredible athlete he is," Calhoun said. "And Chicago is a team that seems to have the most interest."
It would still seem to be an outside shot for Gordon to go to the Bulls with the third pick. But if that happens -- combined with UConn center Emeka Okafor, who is likely to go as the first or second pick to the Orlando Magic or Los Angeles Clippers, respectively -- Calhoun would have two players go higher than any other former Huskies. ...
So Taurasi says that Gordon was the best player on campus and Calhoun calls him the best player he coached and that includes Okafor, Hamilton, Ray Allen, Donyell Marshall.....
