Graves interview on 620 am with Doug and Wolf

First let me say I want to call and tell Graves - “sign a FA already, today, I don’t care who it is, even if as small as that LS – Leach that visited, just don’t stop the momentum.”

Now on to the interview, lots of paraphrasing from me –

Q – Did he ever have a feeling that Warner would leave?
A – Anything can happen in free agency but ultimately he did not think he would leave.

Q – What got the deal done?
A – Pretty much the S.F. trip. Warner was certain that he wanted to be in AZ and it changed their minds for both sides making concessions.

Q – Next Number 1 priority?
A – Mentioned Dansbys name first, whether that means anything I don’t know, also talked about starting negotiations with Wilson this week. Did not mention Boldin at all when answering this question. Again whether that means anything I don’t know.

Q – McFadden, Kuhn, Jordan?
A – Will sit down with McFadden this week to start negotiations, probably today. Didn’t offer anything to Kuhn because he wasn’t sure about his RFA status and how much GB wants him back, may come back to it later?

Q – What is Drew like?
A – Calls him a decent person to deal with but has other objectives that don’t go along with team’s goals which can make him hard to deal with but, one on one he is a good guy to talk to.

Q – Drew is McFaddens agent does that come into play with him being Boldins agent?
A – No because it’s a business and he and Drew both keeps each player separate as such. Drew has to work with other players getting deals to, so other player’s troubles don’t get into play for any other of his clients.

Q – Any calls for Boldin?
A – After making it clear that Boldin is special to them they still get calls.

Q – How has Boldin situation impacted the Cards?
A – Recognize he is special but also recognizes him as having two years left on his deal.

Q – Having too much money tied up to one position?
A – Depends on the other pieces, but is a challenge, make decisions as they come.

Q - What its like at the #31 spot in the draft.
A – Same as any year, BPA, Structure board like they always have and hope for an opportunity.

Q – Edge?
A – Got to do best interest of team and not leave a spot naked if they don’t have to.

Good to hear that they're going to negotiate with McFadden. Makes me think we're not that far out of the ball park.

Yep...seems like McFadden might have gotten a bit of reality shock this week when he wasn't being moneywhipped.

Hope we can sign him.

Agreed. I am puzzled that he has gotten so little attention compared to some of the other free agent corners.

would like to see Wright (the NE DE-DT) who just visited AZ talk contract with the Cards.Seems like the type of player who would do well with the Cards and Whiz`s defense.Plus he is supposed to be a high character hustling-hard worker type player(maybe some of that work ethic could rub off on Alan Branch).

That's pretty much everything I hoped he would say. I'd also like to see a couple of FA O-linemen brought in for depth, but I can't complain about the main objectives. I hope the Dansby thing gets done soon. It seems like they've been trying to sign him long term for about five years now.

Excellent. He isn't going to cave to Boldin's trade demands, and he mentioned Boldin is under contract two more years. Awesome. About Edge, he says that they won't leave the team naked at a position. Double awesome. He wants to get Dansby and Wilson extensions going. Triple awesome. He is opening negotiations with McFadden. And we have quadruple awesome action! Flippin' sweet! See, this is why I haven't been freaking out.

Isn't Pittsburgh's weakness on defense the passing game? I don't know McFadden's game at all but if the rest of the league isn't interested could that be something for the Cardinals to take into account? Very few teams in the league aren't going to be interested in adding another good CB. If he's not getting many calls, that kind of worries me.

I don't think Pittsburgh's defense really had a weakness last year. They were #1 in pass defense in 2008.

Sounds like there is a very good chance McFadden will land in Arizona. Hopefully we can land him for $5 or $ 6 million a year. Will improve our defense tremendously.

There are other teams interested. I think unless he's bowled over he likes what he see's out here. We're an up and coming team and he's a competitor. He wants to play for a winner. Geez , that's great to say, finally. :D

I can't help but think that that is one of those misleading stat's but what if we say their pass "coverage" wasn't stellar? Arizona(last year and this year) had no trouble passing the ball on them.

I think playing in such an awesome defense actually hurts Pitt D players in free agency. A lot of teams may remember all the other Pitt D players that left to go on to do a whole lot of nothing. A lot of teams may feel its just because of the system and not the actual talent. Those could be a couple of reasons, whether they are actually justified or not.

McFadden may also have limited which teams he would want to go to. Maybe he only wants to play in a warm weather state, only for a winner, only for a certian defensive philosophy. Unwittingly he mave have lowered his value without even knowing it because of his own criteria of where he would play.

Who knows?

Call it whatever you want. I don't think that just because one of the best passing team of the past two seasons exploited them means that they're still not one of, if not the best in the league......Here's their stats from 2008:

  • 1st in passing YPG - second was more than 20 yards behind
  • 1st in yards per attempt - second more than half a yard behind
  • 4th in completion percentage
  • 2nd in passing TDs allowed
  • 2nd in QB rating allowed
Also, we didn't have a great game against them in 2007. We only scored 21 points and one TD came from Breaston on a punt return. We threw for a grand total of 225 yards that day on 35 attempts (6.4 ypa is ok but definitely not great).

I'm not saying that all of that means that McFadden is the best thing since sliced bread, but it's faulty logic (IMO) to say that they're passing D wasn't great just b/c we looked great against them in the SB.

He probably wants a chance to compete for a starting job and Whiz has a reputation of playing the best player.

He sure did cave to Fitz demands (Fitz had all the leverage) and Warner's demands. (we had all the leverage) I wouldn't be surprised if Graves gives Boldin what he wants as well.

Did he cave into Warner's demands or did he think that the counter-offer was reasonable? If Warner stays with the team for two years, and I think that he will, he only went up $1.5M a year while Warner came down $3.5M.

Depends on how you look at it. I say he caved. Once Warner's agent went public, he pretty much had to agree.

He'll only give into Q if someone gives the Cardinals what they want, like a #1, #3 and some change.
