Did he cave into Warner's demands or did he think that the counter-offer was reasonable? If Warner stays with the team for two years, and I think that he will, he only went up $1.5M a year while Warner came down $3.5M.

I work for ACME. I make $100k. I might be worth $150K. I ask for a raise of $1M. I then publically state that I would be willing to work for $400K. We agree on $400k. My boss looks so smart because he didn't have to pay me $1.1M, eventhough he paid me double what I'm worth.

I think he absolutely caved as well. Warner never cared about the total price of the contract, all he cared about was the guaranteed money. Just like every other athlete, the bottom line was how much money was in his pocket (contrary to his holier than thou facade). Warner would have agreed to a 1 year -19 million dollar deal. All the second year did was raise the guaranteed money.

You work for ACME. Your performance reports were the best of any employee in your position. As team leader your team was one of the top two out of many. You ask for $1M because that is just about what the top money maker in your position makes. Your boss says that he will pay you $600k, putting you in the top 10. A rumor starts that Best Company will hire you at what you want, and it gets back to your boss. You go to your boss and say, "I really want to stay here" and you ask for a raise to $750k which puts just around #5. The boss says, "You know, I want you here, let's work it out." You took less than what you wanted to stay at ACME and ACME relented a little and rewarded you for your good work.

So what? If he retires, as joeshmo said, we can get some of the bonus back. Worse case scenario is that we have a highly paid backup. Oh wait, we already do.

Not to mention that the guy poised to step into your place, should you leave, is filled with more question marks than answers. And while he's popular and filled with potential, he's still basically only known for getting sauced at the company Christmas party and making out with the ugly chic from accounting.

Like I said, it all depends on how you see it.

While I hate the importance put on Matt's extracurriculars (as I find them irrelevant) I will be the first to say that your line there made me literally laugh out loud.

Well done!
