Shane, I know you have this odd love for Shipp, but would we really re-sign Hambrick if he was to be a "goner?"

Shipp is very expendable right now, and he counts about 1.8 towards the cap. IF, and that's a HUGE if, we were getting EJ, I think Shipp might be packing his bags, and we pick up a RB like sproles later in the draft.

No more than your "odd love for Emmitt" :D

We sign lots of people. That doesnt amount to a hill of beans in the long run in the NFL. No different than signing an undrafted rookie FA. They all can be cut with little implications.

I dont disagree. He could be gone. But if and only if he hes cut then it was done for money reasons. Not based on talent. Pure and simple.

And Shipp isn't all that talented. Didn't Denny already have him benched for your favorite player, Emmitt, once already??

Blah blah blah, That was long before the season began. You can preach all you want but had Shipp been healthy he would have had 1200 yards with the same amount of carries as Emmitt. That could have been one of Greens motivational benchings to get Shipp to really work on his blocking(which green openly stated was his only weakness) Who knows who would be starting come the season opener had he not been hurt.

Shane, pump up Shipp all you want but the reality is that they will be adding a RB whether it be James or a draft pick and that makes Shipp the odd man out. Sorry but it's the truth. And Shipp is not even in the ballpark of James.

Who here said he was in the same ballpark as James. Im so curious as to why you assume he is the odd man out  That baffles me. You can pimp Hambrick all you want!

Did Hambrick get a signing bonus? If not, cutting him would not be that difficult. I dont think they will cut him, but they certainly could with little ramifications.

Damien Anderson was also signed.....somehow I dont see both of them on the roster on opening day. Maybe, But i doubt it!

The problem is:
Would Edge really want to come here?

Don't forget, TB already has "My wife has to be Beatman" as their starting RB.
Maybe they don't like him as much?

It is common knowledge that they will be adding a running back. It is pretty easy to see why Shipp will be gone. They are looking for a number one back either through a trade or through the draft. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't think I am. Considering that fact, and considering the amount of cash Shipp is getting paid, why would they sign Hambrick to a 2 year deal if they planned on keeping Shipp? I don't know this for a fact, but consuidering the fact that Green demoted Shipp and coupled with his injury and the fact that they will be adding another running back, I say Shipp's chances of playing here are pretty slim. Furthermore, he doesn't have breakaway speed, which is something this offense needs. And can he even walk??????

Something that is is being missed here about Shipp is he was out all of last year. What I have heard Green, Mike B., and Rod Graves all say that Shipp will be with the team next year. BUT that they are not sure of how well he will recover from the injury and that is the BIG ???? mark in everyones mind. So signing Hambrick to a 2 year deal is not all that suprising. We carried 4 RB last year and I see no reason we dont this year. If Shipp is healthy I really see no way that he is gone.

Yes, and is worth 8 mill.

He would have to sign it to be traded, then we would have the 8 mill cap hit on us, but then we most definently would renegotiate.

IF you are thinking we dont have the cap space we could use the 4 mill, that I set aside in my spread sheet to help cover it, then worry about renegotiating with Edge, and making our cuts and trades after words to get back the rookie pool we would need before the draft comes around.

Ok, just taking a quick glance at your spread sheet, I see a few cuts that could be made right now.

6 Anthony Clement T $2,400,000 $600,000 $3,000,000
9 Ray Thompson LB $2,000,000 $656,250 $2,656,250
14 James Hodgins FB $1,000,000 $250,000 $1,250,000
21 Ifeanyi Ohalete S $800,000 $0 $800,000
25 Quentin Harris S $656,000 $0 $656,000
26 Ross Kolodziej DT $656,000 $0 $656,000
34 Damien And. RB $455,000 $0 $455,000

Estimated savings cutting them now: 6.7 Million (depending on the years left on Clement, Thompson, and Hodgins contracts). Obviously if they have more than a year left, that savings goes down some, but still could save quite a bit to get Edge aboard. Damn I'm stoked now.

Of I understood this corectly, the cap savings doesn't correlate with these figures because some of it is bonus which would become dead cap $.

Column 2 is the bonus. The guys from Ohalete on down don't have a bonus.

We could still go over the cap and cut them on June 1st and split the hit with this year's and next. We should pick up James then spread the rest of our cut players over 2 years. Just looking at the list and I don't know what people will take anymore in regards to draft picks for our old players. Maybe Raynoch might get some attention besides Shelton. Clement's price tag looks to high.

I sort of wish Green would deal Shelton if the Tampa offer is still on the table .. I know we would take the hit, but better now than later.

Here are the following cap savings. I have already taken into account the remaining yrs of there contracts and bonuses.

Hodgins $ 750,000
Ohalete $ 800,000

Total Savings : $4,548,000

That should be enough for Edge after adding another 2 million per year. With us and the Bucs as the fron runners then maybe this is not such a crazy idea after all.

26 Tampa Bay Buccaneers $-100000
The recent escalation in the Bucs' 2005 cap situation is based in part on the incentives earned by Kenyatta Walker, Michael Clayton, and Brian Griese -- among others. Speaking of Griese, re-structuring his contract freed up over $4 M in cap space and the re-structuring of Alstott's deal freed up an additional $1 M. The team freed up most of their cap overage by releasing Brad Johnson, Mario Edwards, Ian Gold, and Joe Jurevicius. They also will be re-structuring some other contracts to get under the cap.

Yup, the bonus pro-rated and would count against the the total cap number.

Take Clement's number:
6 Anthony Clement T $2,400,000 $600,000 $3,000,000

Clement signed a 5-year deal with a $3M signing bonus. The bonus is pro-rated meaning the bonus cap number is $600.000 per year. His base salary is $2.4M a year.

Clement has two years remaining on his deal meaning we would take a cap hit for the bonus cap number for the two remaining years($1.2M) if he's release or traded. So if he's released now we would only save $1.2M ($2.4-$1.2).

However, if he's released after June 1st the cap hit gets spread out over two years meaning we would save $1.8M this year BUT we would get a "dead" hit of $600.000 next year.

It sure would mean many things if (and a big if) our Cards could get a deal done to bring Edge here. The biggest bonus would be that automatically who ever is behind center becomes better. Imagine Warner with an over 60 % complition average having a good line and a great running back with three great wide outs. WOW ! that would be something. I think I'm starting to click my heals I wanna go home to Kansas, I wanna go home(dreams are great as well ),

Wow. I didn't realize James was only 26.

However, you can't just gut your team of all your depth to get a deal for James done. There would be other ways. Restructuring some contracts could be done. Don't ask me who but it seems all the other teams do it.

Marcel. Ah, Marcel.
Guys , until I see Marcel Shipp with a uniform on and running the football, I refuse to consider him as part of the team right now. For all we know he could end up on I.R. for another year. He's a RB who broke his leg and fractured his ankle 7 MONTHS AGO!!!! Can he run yet? Will he be 100%. Will he ever be 100% of what he was?

The Cards could very well cut him and come to some kind of injury settlement.
To be honest, I love the guy too. But I'm not ready to hitch the wagon to him.
Edgerin James would make us odds on favorite to win the West.

Guess who James' agent is...

Yup...

You guessed right:

Drew Rosenhaus.

Could actually be a good thing, if you do Rosenhaus a "favor" by trading for Edge and giving him a nice contract, he might be a little less of a shark in negotiating for Quan?

Edge is a hell of a player but he does have his downside, same history as Quan with regards to knee problems, and Edge is one of those guys who seems to constantly be upset with his contract.

I would sure investigate the trade because if we can get him it's worth trying, but I DO think Green and Graves need to make sure he's HAPPY with the deal because if he's not, he's one of those guys that will make it perfectly clear he's not happy. He is arguably coming off the best season of his career because their passing game was SO good this year nobody could key on him, and he plays in basically the same offense we want to run.

Two Things:

1. Shipp IS better than Hambrick. But, that may be why he's outta here, too. I could see him being included in a trade for James or packaged for picks on draft day. If James comes here, Shipp is almost surely gone.

2. Cutting Ohelate would be a mistake. The guy wasn't great last year, but he's a good backup, and Griffith is no spring chicken--there's a good chance that our #2 guy has to start at some point this season. Personally, I hope Ohalete retires a Cardinal...as #2 on the depth chart.
