The main issue here is the structure of James' contract.

The Cards would seriously have to break from tradition and not straight line the deal.

Here are the base salaries for Clinton Portis' deal last year: (same agent Drew Rosenhaus)

2004_____380k
2005_____455K
2006_____545k
2007_____3.5m
2008_____5.0M
2009_____6.6m
2010_____7.7m
2011_____8.7m

He received 17m in bonus but they are spead out like this:

11.5 true signing bonus.
1.4m roster bonus in 2004.
2m roster bonus in 2007.
2m roster bonus in 2008.

I am not sure how a roster bonus is prorated but based on the true signing bonus, it would only add 1.44m/yr to his cap figure. If the roster bonus is paid, it might be spread out equally over the remaining years...thus:

Year_____Salary_____SB______RB______Total
2004_____380k____1.44m____175k_____1.995m
2005_____455K____1.44m____175k_____2.07m
2006_____545k____1.44m____175k_____2.16m
2007_____3.5m____1.44m____575k_____5.51m
2008_____5.0M____1.44m____1.075m___7.51m
2009_____6.6m____1.44m____1.075m___9.11m
2010_____7.7m____1.44m____1.075m___10.2m
2011_____8.7m____1.44m____1.075m___11.2m

As with all the other teams contracts...this looks to be more like a 5-6 year deal. IF they cut Portis in 2009...they would eat 7.5m vs 6.6m in salary (net loss of only 900k). If they cut him in 2010, they would save about 2m.

If it's a 6 year deal, you are getting Portis for 6 yrs / 28.3m (4.75m/yr). That is a pretty darn good deal.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen was just asked on Sportscenter where Edgerin James might land and Mort said, "The talk has been Miami and Tampa Bay...but...the one team to look out for...is the Arizona Cardinals...Denny Green has been wanting to acquire a running back the caliber of James...and they have the cap space and the draft picks."

Wow! Can you imagine? Even Steve Levi the Sportcenter anchor said, "Man, will we believe we are watching the Arizona Cardinals?"

Watching Sports Center this morning (Thursday) and they confirm they would trade James for a 2nd round draft pick if it can be done. Problem will be his salary. It will be in excess of 8 mil. Is James worth 8 mil plus vs whoever we might get in a 1st round pick in the draft? i do not know? Could it even be structured within our salary cap? Other than Henry who else in FA is available at RB? The draft may be our only choice. I would surely like a James on this team but we are all probably getting greedy and reaching beyond our reach.

All I can say is that I (The Cards) acquired Edge before the 2006 season on ESPN NFL Y2K on PS2 and he rushed for over 2000 yards and 25 TD and we're the top seed in the NFC playoffs. I had to give up Big for him, but it was worth it.

Well lets look at each team:

Maimi - Dont have a 2nd rounder but they do have Surtain. But Indy doesnt have cap to bring in Surtian. Out of the running unless the give up their 3rd and a future pick as well.

TB - They have a 2nd rounder higher then us, But do they have the cap.

AZ - TB has 2nd rounder higher then us but could we throw in some D players such as Ray Thompson or something else to beat out TB's higher 2nd rounder?

I think all it will take is the 2nd rounder. Everyone will have a problem with his salary which I think would have to be restructred if he is to come to the Cards. RB's who have short careers are not very much into resturcturing unless all money is guaranteed.

Reach baby, as far as you can.

Signing Edge would electrify this franchise to a point it has never been.

The Last time the Colts traded a productive back for a 2nd rd pick (Marshall Faulk) That player went on to win the SB with the Rams, who was the Qb of that team??? Kurt Warner........ ;) ;)

yeah, hold your breath for this one. Edge won't want to come here. If he's going to leave the best bet he has at a SB for a still rebuilding team, he'll go back to Florida to play so he can be close to home. He's not going to want to come here, and he has the luxury of choosing that.

Best stick w/the Travis Henry hopes.

Bring in both EDGES!!!! We have a number of spare parts that the Colts may take with the 2nd rounder - Thompson, Clement, Shelton, even Shipp. G & G, make this happen!!!!

Ok, just taking a quick glance at your spread sheet, I see a few cuts that could be made right now.

6 Anthony Clement T $2,400,000 $600,000 $3,000,000
9 Ray Thompson LB $2,000,000 $656,250 $2,656,250
14 James Hodgins FB $1,000,000 $250,000 $1,250,000
21 Ifeanyi Ohalete S $800,000 $0 $800,000
25 Quentin Harris S $656,000 $0 $656,000
26 Ross Kolodziej DT $656,000 $0 $656,000
34 Damien And. RB $455,000 $0 $455,000

Estimated savings cutting them now: 6.7 Million (depending on the years left on Clement, Thompson, and Hodgins contracts). Obviously if they have more than a year left, that savings goes down some, but still could save quite a bit to get Edge aboard. Damn I'm stoked now.

Are you serious? As thin as we are in the backfield and you're going to cut two more players from those positions? For the price we have Ohalete and Harris, both of who are adequate back-ups who know our system, why would we consider this?

Not sure I would consider it necessarily. I was just looking at some non-starters who were making alot of money. I do agree we are short in the secondary, but if we get James, we can resign Hill, draft a CB in the 1st and 2nd, and maybe a safety later. We would have a young secondary for sure, but I think our pass rush will help them out alot.

Lets look at the facts.

#1 James wants to play in Miami and I doubt he wants to play here.

#2 Graves has already said we are done signing Big name Free Agents.

From that my crystal ball says. "We Are Not Getting James"

I'm sure your right about not getting him. That kind of thing doesn't happen to the Cards, and if we did land him, he'd trip off the plane and snap his leg off. But still, dreaming is fun, and free.

#1- If we give him enough money he will play, its all about the $$$ for him.
#2- Getting James would not be signing a FA we would have to trade for him

So it looks like your crystal ball may be a little murky.

When I heard that Edge may end up leaving the Colts I thought how great it would be to get this guy in here. I wonder what Green and Graves would be willing to do, or not do, to try to get this guy in here.

Rosenhaus Targets 4 Top Echelon and 3 Other Teams

Rosenhaus was asked by ESPN about Miami, and he said it would logically be the best fit ("Edgerrin would love to play there"). Rosenhaus mentioned the Cardinals next and the Niners and TB after that. He considered those four the top echelon he was targeting (because they all need RB's).

Then came the Browns and a couple of other teams. (Note - He also said that "Edgerrin is a professional" and will play wherever they want him to play - cold weather, hot weather, grass or turf).

Add a pound and a half to Mr. Slim.

Colts | Helping James to Find Trading Partner? - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 10 Mar 2005 14:39:27 -0800

Indianapolis Colts RB Edgerrin James' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said the Colts have been very professional in their handling of James' interest in wanting to be traded to another team. He is confident the two can find a suitable trading partner that would acquire James from Indianapolis. If one cannot be worked out, he noted the James would not be pleased having to play under the one-year franchise tender with the Colts. They are looking for a long-term deal, which the Colts are unable to do due to financial constraints.

As the proponent of the "you have a brand new stadium to fill in 2006 if you want to make any money on the darn thing so you better win in 2005" theory --

nothing would get a positive buzz going on the Cards like acquiring Edgerin James.

You have to think an aggressive guy like Michael Bidwill has to consider this.

Personally I like the colts track record of trading away runningbacks. Last time they did it the rams went to the superbowl.

This trade really reminds me of Marshall Faulk. At the time Faulk was a great RB and changed the Rams to superbowl contenders for 2nd rounder and a 5th. That price just seems really cheap to me. Edge has what Denny is looking for in regards to speed, hands, excelleration, and cuts. Edge is a top 5 RB and I would easily do the deal for a 2nd

So Lets take a look at all possible suiters for Hames here ..

Tampa Ba is 2 million over the cap after the Draft and can not afford James. Plus they are still working off the Sapp and Lynch contracts so it seems very unlikely

With 5 million still left for the cap and a few other cap casualties we could easily have enough money for James. Throw in the fact that everyone's contract is a straight deal so we should not jump to far next year on salary's. Plus we will have 7.2 million next year coming off on dead weight.

I like Hookem Cards idea's about the cuts or trade/ except take out Ohalate

6 Anthony Clement T $2,400,000 $600,000 $3,000,000
9 Ray Thompson LB $2,000,000 $656,250 $2,656,250
14 James Hodgins FB $1,000,000 $250,000 $1,250,000
25 Quentin Harris S $656,000 $0 $656,000
26 Ross Kolodziej DT $656,000 $0 $656,000
34 Damien And. RB $455,000 $0 $455,000

That is another 4 million / and the dead weight that we will get back next year is 11.2 million. That will be plenty of cap space next year, but we will not be able to spend that heavy again. So that will give us a little over 9 million for this year still.

Then use the CardFan contract for James which would be more backloaded. maybe a 5yr / 32 million with 13 guaranteed. This would place it at 6.4 a year

49ers have the most cap room at 4.8 million, but they just signed Barlow to a huge contract just last year. They would probably be the team that has the most competiotion

Saban does not want James so this is not a option.
