Mitch has mentioned Greg McElroy a couple of times but other than that he gets little to no press. Many do not even know who he is or where he is from. Take a look at the Alabama QB rating over the years. All this guy does is win. He is not to small at 6'2". He could go in round #2 or round #6. No one really knows. He appears to be smart and has taken Alabama to some championships. He could be an absolute steal in the lower rounds if he continues under the radar. Watching all the SEC games over the years he sure impressed me. He is also mobile.

Would love to pick him up in the draft in the 4th or lower, and sign a vet to start.

It will be interesting to see what McElroy does in the NFL. He is definitely a sleeper pick in this years draft.

His workout will go a long way to answering his critics. His arm strength is a huge question mark. I think he is sort of the anti-Newton, his strength will be in the interviews/one on ones but his workouts will probably hold him back.

I've been an Alabama fan for as long as I can remember and I have been trying the last 2 years to convince fans that Greg McElroy can be a successful NFL quarterback. It's kind of funny how things have worked out for McElroy. He is the guy who right from the 1st day he was named a starter at Alabama, people were judging as "just another solid Alabama QB", another game manager who has great talent around him. Most of the talk revolving around McElroy was more on what he would do with his life after college football (Rhodes Scholar possibility, Medical School, Law School, Politics), instead of the NFL.

Opinions seemed to change after the Arkansas game where he outplayed Ryan Mallett. Suddenly NFL people started to notice that he is a pretty big kid, has decent mobility in the pocket, has nice accuracy, and is about as smart as you can get. Suddenly he went from a nice college quarterback to a guy who just might make it in the NFL.

He is winner. Plain and simple. Humble, hard working, and a much better athlete then you would expect.

Didn't we see this movie before when the name on the jersey was "Matt Flynn"?

Isn't he stuck behind Rodgers in Green Bay? Pretty tough to pass him. I think he played very well in a loss to the Pats when Rodgers went down last year

Holian:

Today Somers was reporting that Whiz was saying that he wants "gym rats and leaders" as his QBs. This is why I strongly believe this kid is the best QB in this draft for the Cardinals.

His resume is unreal. Undefeated in Div. 5A High school football in Texas...State Champion who threw 58 TDs in his h.s carrer.

Undefeated in his first season as starter at Alabama, 14-0, SEC Champions over Tebow and Florida (McElroy=game MVP)...wins NCAA Chamionship...and talk about tough---he was sacked 5 times in the game, suffered two cracked ribs and would not come out.

This past season...he led the team to a 9-3 record...and in all three games Alabama lost, McElroy put up very good numbers...in other words, he was NOT the reason why they lost...remember the Auburn game? McElroy played great in that game.

The only QB in this draft who might have played in front of him at Alabama is Cam Newton...and I say might. Not sure what Saban would have done if he had to choose between those two. Serious. Saban loved McElroy as his QB...no flash...no exhorbitant ego...just pure leadership and grit.

He is my favorite player in this draft...and I want him at #38...don't want to take any chances. We waited one pick too long for my favorite QB in last year's draft, Mike Kafka...and he actually is the reason why Philly may very well trade Kevin Kolb...they love Kafka. Headsy, athletic, super competitive.

There has been a plethora of winning college qbs that never succeeded in the pros. McElroy did not show anything at all during the Senior Bowl week or game. Looks like practice squad material but I've been wrong many times on draft picks. Hope the Cards pass on him. He most likely will be picked in the 5th round or lower.

huh .
the only comparable about them is they both have 11 letters in their name.

Last year before football season started CBS did a show about the Alabama training camp, I know it's college.
One of the first shots was McElroy driving up in a brand new Range Rover.
Hollywood is a long way from Alabame but the star struck, king of the world, syndrome and attitude, which was in full display, is still the same.

he had just returned from getting Saban's car washed. Just like any other SEC school, Alabama would never let a kid have any improper benefits, like a Range Rover :D.

The more i watch this kid, the more i like him. It's quiet obvious that his skillset fits the pro game. The way he approaches the game, is exactly the way you want a pro to play the game. Also, when i look at him, i see a man, not a college kid that needs years and years to mature. He will need some time to understand the scheme, yes, but not to mature personally. Same with Ponder.

He definitely enters the list of QB's i want this year. My favourite, by far, is Christian Ponder, but this kid also has a chance to understand the game at next level.

Ponder, McElroy, Stanzi, Devlin. All four have some pro skills to their game. Not meaning any of those four will make it. It just means that their strength and skillset translates to the pro style offense. The long list of QB's have narrowed down to these four to me, irrespective of draft position. Wether you select someone top 5 or in 7th round has never mattered much to me. The only thing that matters, is selecting Mr. right guy.

You have to love McElroy's accuracy. He really has awesome touch even deep to place the ball where only reciever's can get it. That's what impressed me the most. Also as Mitch says, the games Alabama lost, he played really well in those games.

1. Ponder
2. McElroy
3. Stanzi
4. Devlin

That's my QB wishes for the draft as it is right now.

Guess what Mitch..the kid ain't a sleeper. The kid from Nevada ain't chopped liver either. With the number of teams needy and those on the cusp of needly, rounds 2-4 are going to be loaded down with qb picks.

Funny how the Iggles manage to get their talons on a who lotta' good qb's over the years.

Yeah, lobo, man it was a total dis that the Eagles snuck right in front of the Cardinals to take Mike Kafka last year...which caused the Cardinals to trade back and then forward to take O'Brien Schofield and then Big Red Skelton.

When you go undefeated in high school and 23-3 in college with a NCAA Championship in a 14-0 year---it's pretty hard to be a sleeper. This kid is a winner---he gets it done.

Today McElroy scored a 48 out of 50 on the Wonderlic test so he is sure no dummy.

Today Mallet showed a very quick release and fast drop back. His release point in height when throwing the ball is 8 feet. He was very accurate. I think but may be wrong that Mallet throws the ball at 65 mph. Newton's accuracy was off considerably at the workouts. Interviews tomorrow.

I'm also an Alabama fan and have seen almost every game McElroy has played. His dad, Greg Sr., is marketing veep for the Cowboys -- and played offensive line for Dick Tomey at Hawaii. McElroy is almost everything you want for a QB and I have no doubt he would not struggle making the transition to the pro game. He scored a 48 on his Wonderlic.

The only problem with drafting the kid is he struggles to make plays on his own merit. He's an unbelievable game manager and is excellent in the play-action part of the game. He makes the right checks and delivers catchable balls. But when defenses took away the running game, even as a 5th-year senior McElroy couldn't make a play to rescue the offense. The South Carolina game was telling. Less telling was the Auburn game, where Bama jumped out to a big lead, but receivers started dropping balls and fumbling in that game ... was less his fault.

Alabama would often go to a 5-receiver spread early in games to get McElroy in some kind of rhythm, but you really didn't see much 4th quarter production out of him.

So ... when you draft him, you feel comfortable you know exactly what you go, but you also know you didn't just draft a future Hall of Famer.

On his Wonderlic test he scored 48 out of 50. He obviously is very smart. Newton was really off on his throwing today at the combines. Mallet threw very well with a quick release and a quick dropback. To me Newton will take longer to be NFL QB Ready than Mallet but then will likely be a better QB in the right system. Mallet progressed very rapidly from his second to his third year at Arkansas. Bobby Petrano had a lot to do with that. He may be 1-2 years ahead of Newton in adjusting to the NFL. He is a pure drop back passer. If your team likes a QB who can run and escape trouble, big arm, big man then clearly Newton is your man. If your coach likes QBs who hang tough in the pocket who has good size, very big hands and a rocket arm and is smarter than the media seems to know then Mallet is not a bad choice. He was definitely the team leader at Arkansas. No doubt about it. I think he goes in the first round as will Newton. Many of our posters think Newton, Mallet, and some of the others are not worthy of high picks. If you need a QB there are some guys here who very well could make a QB of the future. You step up, spend the money, and give it a go.
There will definitely be some movement on how these prospects are rated after the combine.

For some reason he reminds me of Tom Brady coming out of college. He has a better college resume than Brady but McElroy is a smart kid who can manage a game and is accurate and efficient. The only question is his arm strength but if we do not take Mallett in Round 2 he is my pick somewher between Round 4 & 5.

I'm a closet Bama fan as well. I like the guy and think he's very underrated. He'd be a great get in round 5. The reason I say round 5 is because it doesn't seem like until round 4 that teams start looking hard at development type QB's, guys that aren't going to start for about 3 years, if then, and that's how he projects. Guys like Gabbert, Newton, Locker, Mallet, Ponder, and maybe Kaepernick wil go in the first wave. Then Stanzi, McElroy, Dalton, and Devlin types in the next wave.
