Plays the entire 3rd preseason game, and dare I say is competing with Gerald Hodges for a starting spot at linebacker.

Not good.

So much talent available in that draft and at that position, and the Cardinals did the Keim-iest thing and took a tweener with no position.

We have three linebackers slated to start for this team, and one is an ex-safety, and one is an ex-defensive end.

Ugh.

It always seemed like BA’s history with Temple University was at least somewhat tied to that pick as well. It’s pretty difficult, but not impossible obviously, to go from D1 walk on to the first round of the NFL Draft. Not sure if that had ever happened before Reddick. He is still young, so can still improve. Shocking to see him playing in the 4th quarter last night though.

Not only do I agree but much kudos should be given to you for coining the verb “keimiest”.

He’s 24. Linebacker is the easiest position to have an instant impact at.

Keim is not very good at identifying linebacker prospects, methinks.

Fair enough on the age, but easiest position to have an instant impact at is running back in my opinion. You either have the instincts or you do not....

Him playing late in the game was a clear message. Don't care where you were drafted you will have to earn playing time. I like it....

Haason needs all the reps he can get to familiarize himself with the position. I believe he’s a slow learner, so experience is key. Disappointing, yes! But not the doom and gloom being portrayed here. He’s playing fairly well IMO.

I'll wait to see if or how much he plays in game 4, before assuming Wilks' thoughts on Reddick.

Definitely disappointing. If he was truly being counted on to contribute meaningfully this season, he would not be out there in the 3rd quarter of a pre-season game.

When Keim chose Reddick, we were a 3-4 defense. We are now a 4-3... Reddick is being forced to learn a new position again.
Not making excuses for him or Keim actually. As even in his rookie year, he certainly struggled in the 3-4.
But I would hold off on the slamming the pick altogether and wait to see if he can adjust to his new position...

Did he play with the starters or did they just have 2 LBs out there for most of that time? I only saw Buc and Bynes.

They played in nickel most of the game so they only had 2 LBs out there.

People tend to undersell how tough it is to transition from being a DE to an off-ball LB. I don't know if Reddick can do it, but that is why he was a bad pick. It is never a great idea to spend a premium asset on someone who has never done what you want him to do.

This is the play that really makes me scratch my head with Reddick. I equate it to when a ball rolls out into the street and the 5-year old kid runs out after it without looking for cars. Eventually that kid learns to look first, then run out after ball. Reddick seems like the kid that can never learn that.

So how did he do last night with his gap? Any improvement?

He read his keys and picked the right hole from what I saw.

Southpaw, I'm going to rebut your statement with a flat out declaration of "if you can play, you can play". The school in my estimation is secondary. Yeah, we all like to see names from the power schools come up, but time and time again, this league has proven that if you have the ability and are naturally gifted, the school is irrelevant. I recall wondering if a LB from New Mexico State was actually as good as advertised years ago, now Brian Urlacher is in the hall of fame. Bobby Wagner from good ol Utah State is pretty damn good, would you not agree? Carson Wentz from that power house North Dakota State is seemingly doing pretty good himself as well. I know Reddick was no Urlacher in college, but again, my point is the school has become less important in my eyes.

I don't know crap about reading keys. Please enlighten us, because to the untrained eye this does not look good....thanks...

Like most things in football reading a key is not that hard. The linebacker has a lineman, or back to key in on. Based on the 1st one or two steps you should be able to see what the player you are keying is doing, and react to it.

Linebackers can key on backs, or linemen. Regardless, to get lost in the shuffle in that play shown above does not look good. Even if Reddick was keying a back, and it was not the fullback, he has to react to the situation a lot better than that.

If he was keying a lineman, then he read it wrong or not at all.

Thanks Rugby. That's sounds dangerous because so much can change so fast. It would seem smarter to just maintain your gaps, even for LBs. FWIW last week Wilks did mention that LBs need to do a better job with gaps. I'm guessing he was mainly talking about Reddick because I've seen him do this type of thing more than once this year.
