Hardaway makes anti-gay comments on radio
BY MICHELLE KAUFMAN
[email protected]

Retired Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway, known for his candor, said on a radio show Wednesday that he would not want a gay player on his team, would ask for him to be traded, and went so far as to say: ``You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States.''

Hardaway was a guest with host/Herald columnist Dan Le Batard on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket, and at the end of the interview, Le Batard asked Hardaway how he would deal with a gay player, in light of last week's disclosure by retired NBA center John Amaechi that he is gay.

''First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team,'' Hardaway replied. ``And second of all, if he was on my team, I would really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room. But stuff like that is going on and there's a lot of other people I hear that are like that and still in the closet and don't want to come out of the closet, but you know I just leave that alone.''

Asked what he would do if he had a gay teammate, Hardaway said he would ask for the player to be traded or to be bought out of his contract.

''Something has to give,'' he said. ``And I think the majority of players would ask for him to be traded or they would want to be traded. Or buy him out of his contract and just let him go. Something has to give. If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that are upset and can't concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court it's going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate.''

Hardaway is the first NBA player -- current or former -- to make anti-gay statements since Amaechi's news came out. In fact, most of the players and coaches quoted last week, including Heat center Shaquille O'Neal, were supportive of Amaechi and said they would not be bothered by a gay teammate.

What if the gay player were a great player, Hardaway was asked.

''If he were that great something would still have to give,'' he said. ``People would feel uncomfortable with that. If you're not gay, nobody in that locker room would feel comfortable with that person on your team.''

Amaechi probably will not be surprised when he reads Hardaway's comments. He said in a phone interview Tuesday he believes there is still a lot of homophobia in society and in professional sports locker rooms.

''We are much further behind than I'd like,'' Amaechi said. ``People in America and England [where Amaechi grew up] would like to think racism is over, sexism is over, and homophobia is over, but it's not. My coming out will show that gay people don't all look like Jack from Will and Grace. Some of us are big, athletic men, and that should be OK.''

Amaechi said he had not heard from a single former teammate or NBA player, that he had only heard from former coach Doc Rivers. He challenged straight athletes ''who feel able'' to stand up for gay rights.

''I would like professional male athletes to be active supporters, and that doesn't mean putting a rainbow decal on their car,'' he said. ``It means letting other guys in the locker room know that it's not OK to make gay jokes, that it's hurtful, and that it's not OK to be homophobic.

``But it's hard to get straight guys to step up. When men stood by women during the suffrage movement, they were called progressive and bold. When whites stood by blacks, they were heroes. But a straight guy standing up for a gay guy faces discrimination, and that's a big part of the battle we're fighting.''

Why isnt this causing more outrage in the NBA and in society?

This is the same hateful rhetoric that white players said about Jackie Robinson.

What if Andre Barginani (or some other white/foreign) had said that he doesnt care to play with black players and hates black people? Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be leading the media around by the collar to ensure this became topic #1 in America.

This is unacceptable.

I ffind laws with comparing this with Jackie Robinson..

There are bi people in this world.. They can chose what type of person they want on any given day.. A person cant decide "oh I wanna be white today" when they are black..

Lot of grey area here..

I dont buy the Jackie Robinson arguement..

sorry, but you're flat out wrong. if someone is gay, they are gay. you can argue bi's till you're blue in the face, but being gay doesn't automatically make you bi. you can't choose to like girls all of sudden. if was cool to be gay could you choose to like dudes? look at it that way.

And here we have exactly what I was trying to say.. How do you know? What makes you an authority? What makes a gay person an authority on bi people? Here is the grey area..

Switch Hardaway with any white former athlete, and change gay to black and he would be crucified in the media. Amazingly I saw some media people today saying it was freedom of speech

While I don't agree with him, he is still entitled to his opinion. I hate it when these PC groups put pressure on people to apologize. If that's how he feels, that's how he feels. Why make him give a fake apology?

I agree that he shouldn't be forced to apologize if thats the way he feels but he deserves to be crucified for his comments for how completely ignorant and hateful they are.

Just a pet peeve -- while Hardaway's comments are disgraceful and deplorable, it doesn't make sense to call them "ignorant." Ignorance means having a lack of knowledge, not having a lack of comprehension or decency. There are plenty of ways to disparage prejudice, but the term "ignorant" really isn't one of the better ones.

I wonder if Hardaway is going to have to go to "rehab" like that Grey's Anatomy dude? I didn't even know they had rehab for that kind of stuff.

I don't know. I can certainly argue, but won't, that some of Hardaway's comments are out of ignorance. But he did say how he felt although I don't necessarily agree I do respect him for that and unfortunately he had to give a fake apology for it.

Being homophobic is being ignorant though by definition : "unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals and homosexuality." I just feel Hardaway by saying "I'm homophobic and it doesn't belong in the world or in the United States." Is ignorant. There is no reason to fear people who are gay.

I'm not trying to condone homophobia in any way, but actually that definition is pretty biased. I don't like the flavor of ginger, and I don't have any "reason" for my dislike -- it is, to borrow the language of your definition, an "unreasoning antipathy." Does that make my dislike of ginger "ignorant"? (Answer: No.) If ginger were a person, you could accuse me of intolerance or psychopathy or a wide range of other things, but not "ignorance."

The definition you quoted boils down to the premise, "Anyone who dislikes gays just doesn't understand them." While that may be true in many cases, people can have other (equally invalid!) reasons for disliking gays. "Ignorance" is just a misapplied concept in this case.

huh? do you KNOW that you can't make yourself sexually attracted to a guy? i do. and i can't prove that to a homosexual, so why should we expect different from them? they can't prove it and we can't prove it, but we (meaning heterosexuals) know undeniably that we can't just "flip a switch" so why is it so hard to make the mental leap that they (homosexuals) can't either? i guess we just have to take each others' words for it. and is that really so difficult to do?

i can't disagree with this comment. it's not that the PC group wants an apology (okay, maybe they do, but it's short-sighted if you think that's all they want), it's that they want the speaker, here a famous person with access to press and widespread dissemination of his opinion, to actually think about the hate he/she is spreading, maybe hear the anger of the nation, actually think (GOD FORBID!) about why he/she is receiving the backlash, and hopefully change their hate-derived opinion. at the very least the PC group can't let hate from such an individual be spoken without repurcussion b/c it only helps to legitimize the hate in the eyes of the pubic. by demanding an apology the PC group is not saying that it's wrong to speak your mind, they are saying what you believe is just not acceptable in a civilized accepting society.

the NAACP doesn't condemn racist remarks or actions b/c black people's feelings are hurt, they exist to help eradicate hatred of black people period.

I'm guessing he will claim alcoholism within the week.

As all of us knew when he continually botched his way through highlight reels when he was on NBA Tonight a few years back, TIm Hardaway is a moron. This doozy puts the nail in the coffin.
