Haren and Saunder's eras for the season are identical!?!?

This looks like one of those deals that you won't be able to fairly evaluate for a couple of years.

I believe a lot of Haren's misfortunes were due to lack of motivation, which sucks to admit. His body language told me he was mentally exhausted by the lack of success and the # of quality starts the bullpen ruined for him (the Cardinals game where the team committed two throwing errors in the 9th comes to mind).

Thats why IMO Haren's ERA is where it is. Saunders I think has peaked, while Haren is no where close to his apex. Angels just got a potential Cy Young winner for next season, we got hopes and dreams.

What we got was pitching depth through our organization on guys who are very likley to be pitching in the Major Leagues at some point.

Now we have a Double A guy, A ball guy, and a MLB ready starter who eats innings. I see Saunders as being very similiar to Kennedy, and we all know how vital Kennedy is to our long term plans at this point.

Would I have loved to get a Porcello or similar fireballer? I guess but I like the fact we got a definite rotation guy for the next 2 1/2 years, and guy who will be pitching in our terrible bullpen sooner then later and two LHP prospects who have both shown well in the minors so far.

Sounds like Sheehan at Cnnsi.com thought we should have gotten Strasburg. I think our pitching depth has been rebuilt in one move and I am thinking there are more to come (Laroche, Jackson, Johnson, etc). we should have tons of flexibililty going into next year starting with the payroll and hopefully some more prospects going forward.

Now hopefully Parker recovers properly and can be our flamethrower starting next year. Otherwise we can address the high ceiling pitchiers guys in next years draft with 2 of the Top 7 picks. Right now we are STOCKED 2-5 :)

Says it all really.

"For the Diamondbacks, the news is grim. Saunders is a back-rotation starter with no upside and enough service time that he's in line to make about $6 million in 2011. Haren makes $12.75 million next year, so they're not even saving much money in the deal in the short term. Rafael Rodriguez is a 25-year-old right-handed reliever who has been moderately effective in the minors since moving to the bullpen in 2007. He's a groundball pitcher, not a strikeout guy, with the limited upside that implies. Patrick Corbin was unranked on the Angels' Top 11 Prospects list published by Baseball Prospectus. More polish than projection, Corbin is also a low-upside prospect. The 21-year-old lefty has pitched very well in a difficult environment this season, striking out 64 men and walking 18 in 11 starts for Rancho Cucamonga.

There's a player to be named coming back to the Diamondbacks as well, though it will not be Futures Game stud outfielder Mike Trout. Speculation has centered on Tyler Skaggs, a supplemental first-round pick a year ago. Skaggs was ranked No. 9 by Prospectus, and as a prospect is something of an embryo, a 19-year-old with a projectable body and raw skills, pitching well in the Midwest League this season.

Whether Skaggs or another player, though, the fourth man in the deal won't change the evaluation of it. The Diamondbacks traded Haren and got back no top-50 prospects, maybe no top-100 prospects. If the goal was to save money, they failed as well; the difference between what they'll pay Saunders and what they would have paid Haren is likely to be washed away by the damage done by what has now been made clear: the Diamondbacks are focused on the long term, and unlikely to be contenders in the NL West for a few years. If there's a model for how not to handle the trade of a high-priced, high-value player, this is it."

My initial breakdown of this trade:

I REALLY like Skaggs. I think he has as high of a ceiling as any pitcher currently in the minors. I think he's better than Nova, better than Corsart, and a shade better than Shelby Miller. At worst, I see him as being a Jarrod Washburn or a Barry Zito (at their best). At best, if all pans out, I see a lot of Roy Oswalt in him.

I'm also thinking these writers are underestimating Corvin. He's got a live fastball, good control and has made gradual improvements since hitting the pros. Granted, I don't EVER see him being a top of the rotation guy, but I forsee him being a solid #3- #4 pitcher. Sorta reminds me a bit of Ross Ohlendorf, with a little higher ceiling than Ohlendorf had hitting the pros.

Not a fan of Rodriguez.. Yes, he has 10 saves in AAA, but I see him more as at best a 7th inning guy/MR. His projection upside is DJ Carrasco, although he gets hit more often than Carrasco does.

Saunders.. At 29, he's got no ceiling, but he's dependable. Not a top of the rotation guy, but at worst, he's a 3-5 year option to hold the fort down.

I suppose they could have done better, but Skaggs really makes this deal passable.

First start for Haren tonight and he gets hit in the arm by a line drive. Maybe the D-Backs saw this coming? :)

Seriously tho, I hope he doesnt miss any time.

These are quotes from Angelswin.com.

The Angels have something special in development with Skaggs—the other half of the Tyler combination in Cedar Rapids. For now, the Angels are taking it very slowly with him as he is a very young player. They do not want to risk overthrowing his arm. He has a plus breaking ball and a plus changeup to go along with an average fastball. He mixes his pitches well and keeps them all in the strike zone. Although he most likely won’t jump a level this year, his play has earned him an A+ grade for the season so far.

Corbin started off the season 8-0. That run earned him a promotion to Single-A Rancho Cucamonga where he has posted better numbers in a hitter-friendly league. The big change for Corbin has been has maturity on the mound. He’s having fewer meltdown innings where his pitch counts and the game would get out of control. He’s been able to adjust more to situations in the game on the fly, and the results are there.

To me, these are the prizes of this trade.

I didn't like the purpose of the Haren trade which was salary relief, but honestly no one wants to give up anything for the top SP's right now. Word is that Oswalt might not get traded now because the packages have been underwhelming plus he will not approve a PHI deal. What we got for Haren was the best deal out there, analysts say we got taken but taking a NYY package would have been straight up rape. Saunders is not an ace but he meets the D'Backs requirement of getting a ML arm, he is a good #3 guy and would provide a veteran presence next year, hopefully Parker makes the ML roster and takes Haren's place.

Two Top 10 picks next year are really going to help us but we can't go with the cheap sign, we need to pay for impact guys. A little off topic but looking at last years draft, we got some really good players and its not necessarily Borchering, Owings & Davidson. Paul Goldschmidt & Marc Krauss are really lighting it up in Hi-A. Brandon Allen better watch his back because Goldschmidt may be the long term answer at 1B and Krauss could be our LF of the future.

I know Saunders has only pitched two games but he is making those who thought this trade was bad think again. I was in the minority in liking the Haren trade. As mentioned before, Haren is not a #1 pitcher on most teams and his numbers, especially since last July, are not what you would expect from a #1 pitcher. I also saw MLB Network showed how Haren has lost 3 mph on his fastball.

Saunders is not a stiff and getting him plus three other players was a good deal. When the Diamondbacks traded Schilling, a #1 pitcher, that was a bad trade. I know it's early but I am liking this trade and if any of the young pitchers they got contribute later on, I'm sure many will change their mind.

I was always for keeping Haren but thought what they got in return was a hell of a lot better than anything else they would have gotten. I do not understand the criticism of Saunders, he was an AS had a good record, had a career ERA of 4.00+ but he played in the AL against some good teams plus he finally gives us a LHP in the rotation.

He pitched a nice game but would have liked to see him retaliate for the hit on Reynolds. Haren certainly would have.

Isn't this sort of thing usually called by the manager?

The umpire had warned both teams after the beaning. If Saunders threw at a batter he would have been kicked out of the game. It would then have been up to our fabulous bullpen to save the game. Glad to see that cooler heads prevailed and Gibson ignored it.

Haren went 6.1 innings tonight, giving up 4 runs on 10 hits against Baltimore. The Angels scored 4 runs in the 8th but lost the game. Haren got a no decision.

Moves: Acquired P Joe Saunders from Los Angeles of Anaheim for Dan Haren in a five-player deal; Traded Edwin Jackson to Chicago White Sox for pitching prospect Daniel Hudson; Acquired OF Ryan Church, IF Bobby Crosby and P D.J. Carrasco from Pittsburgh for C Chris Snyder in five-player trade; Traded relief pitcher Chad Qualls to Tampa Bay.

Executives' Comments: "They did well with the players they moved. We have great reports on Hudson. They had something like a draft at the deadline. Very good job"...."I like what (new GM Jerry) DiPoto did. He was very decisive. If DiPoto were running the Nats, he would have found a trade for Dunn.''

My take: They did very well to get the prospects they got, but it's a bit surprising there wasn't more action on Adam LaRoche, a solid hitter who is a big second-half performer
