It's Official: Deathly Hallows Will be Two Films
Source: Los Angeles Times
March 12, 2008

After months of rumors, Warner Bros. and the producers of the massively successful movies will announce Thursday that they plan to split Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, J.K. Rowling's seventh and final "Potter" novel, into two blockbuster films -- one to be released in November 2010 and the second in May 2011, says the Los Angeles Times.

The films will be titled, simply, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, according to producer David Heyman. Director David Yates, who returned for his second tour of Potter duty with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and is quite popular with the cast, will direct both "Deathly Hallows" films, which will be filmed concurrently. Screenwriter Steve Kloves also returns and, by completion of the franchise, will have written seven of the eight films.

Some cynics will see the move as simply doubling the box-office payday, but Radcliffe told the newspaper that the split is purely in service of the story.

Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

Heyman said now that the "Potter" team knows they can split "Deathly Hollows" in half, the next challenge is figuring out the division.

As Heyman put it: "The question will be, where do you break it? And how do you make them one but two separate and distinct stories? Do you break it with a moment of suspense or one of resolution? These are the interesting challenges. But each book has presented its challenges."

I imagine they will be able to be extremely faithful to the book.
Hopefully. With all that extra time they should be. My concern is that the "teenagers" will look about 30 by the time this is finally finished.

LOVE IT!

They are shooting them concurrently, so I'm not concerned about the aging of anyone.

I was actually pretty dissapointed in this book...especially after the Half Blood Prince was easily the best in the series.

I don't know how many times I said "Wow, thats convenient" when reading "The Deathly Hallows".

Speaking of the Half Blood Prince, it's too bad they didn't do 2 movies on that, as well. It's every bit as detailed and complex as Deathly Hallows (which I found to be a wonderful ending to it all).

Plot Summary: Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort's immortality and destruction—the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.

Meanwhile, the wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort's Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Potter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort... alive.

Harry's only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale—the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks.

Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became "the Boy Who Lived." No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort.

Great, great movie, and perfect setup for Part 2.

Keep in mind that the ending is certainly open-ended--I know some reviewers in England were complaining about that. Doesn't make much sense considering it's a 2-part series now. I definitely liken this to Empire Strikes Back. Part 2 should be absolutely amazing.

Saw it last night with the wife. It was EXCELENT. It had some differences from the book towards the beginning, but those changes were good decisions IMO and helped set the tension for the rest of the movie.

Very impressed.

Loved the movie.

I would put it as the #1 of the bunch thus far if it weren't for my affinity for the first film. This movie was very, very dark and full of tension.

It was a very fast 2 1/2 hours and I think everybody moaned in disappointment when the credits rolled.

Helena Bonham Carter is so fantastic as Bellatrix.

Ditto, Ditto, and Ditto again. In spite of the few variations from the book, probably the truest to the book of all the movies so far. Every single actor was OUTSTANDING! And none of the warm bits of humor that consistently popped up seemed out of place.

A 5 out of 5 star movie. C'mon, Part 2!!!!!

I agree with all the kudos that this movie has received thus far. I only had one minor quibble and that might be fixed in the next movie anyway.

*****SPOILER*****

I was disappointed Wormtail wasn't killed by his own hand. I'm not sure why they didn't take the few seconds to do that. I'm sure, on the other hand, that they will use it in the second movie.

for Potterfiles, I bet it was a great movie, but for those just watching it as a movie, it definitely left a lot to be desired.

I thought the first 30 minutes were GREAT. Like knock it out of the park, this movie is elevating beyond the series GREAT... then, it just felt like filler until the finale, with an ending that didn't leaving me gasping so much as it did rolling my eyes.

############SPOILERS######################

I just had a big problem with everything that happened at the house at the end. They didn't know the half busted face was Potter even tho he had the mark and was with his two best friends who he goes with EVERYWHERE FOR 7 YEARS?! That moment at the end totally took me out of the movie, as did the "hey, our heroes ared screwed, but here's this little guy out of nowhere to save them conveniently!"

Like I said... the first 30 minutes, FANTASTIC. The rest of the it ok, the end of it, just plain bad.

I'm quoting your spoiler, so...

The little guy didn't come out of nowhere...Harry was playing with the mirror shard the entire movie, and at the beginning it looked like another eye in the mirror...so Dobby's appearance isn't really out of the blue.

The part at Malfoy Manor could have been done better, but she they had two real reasons for hesitating to contact big V...Death Eaters had been burned before by Potter and were loathe to have it happen again. Also, Bellatrix had a reveal, 'oh crap' moment and she really, really couldn't call him. I don't know if you've read the book, so I won't say what it is here...I'll put it in a second spoiler lol

Okay, here's the second spoiler...

If it turned out that the Sword of Gryffindor was real and had been stolen from her vault, Voldemort would have been killer angry at Bellatrix

You simply cannot watch this movie as a newbie. In fact, it's probably the movie that's the most dependent on those before it than any in the series.
