See, here's my problem. Movie 3 was a good movie, yes, but a horrible Harry Potter Movie. Just went in the wrong direction. My ranking:
Sorcerer's Stone
Goblet of Fire
Chamber of Secrets
Prisoner of Azkaban (sp?)
I could also switch around Chamber and Goblet, IMO. I love Stone because it brings the book to the screen, while still making a hugely entertaining movie. I rank Prisoner so low because, while making a very entertaining film, it made for a lousy Potter movie.
You can't just say that without talking about WHY you thought it was a lousy Potter movie. The only problem I hear with the movie from most people is that the kids don't wear the house robes that much.

Ok, here's your chance--what parts of the book would you have put in, and what parts of the movie would you have cut out? There is no way that the movie should be longer than it already is, so if you put parts of the book into the movie, existing scenes would have to be cut. What would your plan be?

I would shorten the unnecessary 5+ minute hippogriff ride and add more to the important part of the book were he finally meets Sirius and they didn't even talk about Moony, Padfoot, Wormtail and Prongs. They said those names but anyone who didn't see the movie would be confused. I think meeting Sirius was the climax of the story and the scene in that room was shorter than the hippogriff ride which was gay. I had more complaints but I haven't seen the movie in over 2 years. I know that watching that almost made me not want to see any other Harry Potter movie that came out.
All I know is the next one needs to be over 3 hours and I know I would watch it like people did for LOTR. The next book is long and the movie needs to be longer than the 2 1/2 hours Goblet of Fire was or I think they will be leaving too much stuff out.

Okay...4 mintes 52 seconds.. I just thought the movie was terrible. I remember it kinda made me sick after I watched it, and no, it wasn't the popcorn.
Why won't it be over 3 hours? Long books like that need longer movies and I know the people dressed up in Harry Potter robes and all the fans of the book will see it anyway.
Oh and I just have to laugh at the Goblet of Fire's quidditch world cup scene. I knew that it would leave a lot of stuff out but it was just so poorly done it was funny.

Because of the audience. A basic rule in the movie business--the younger the audience, the shorter the movie has to be. Goblet of Fire was probably the maximum length any Harry Potter should be be. But we'll see. We like to think that he's growing up and the movies are growing up too, but 3 hours is still a VERY long movie, even for adults. LOTR is an older demographic than Harry Potter.

Well then I'm sure i'll really hate the next movies...unless they make two and show the other one later, and I really don't like that. I understand what you are saying though. It's just really dissapointing to me to see the book shown like that...it just doesn't seem like Harry Potter to me...
Yeah, but they don't have to show Quidditch for us to get that sub-story. That can be worked in super-quick and without showing any on-field stuff. I hope they manage that.
Of course, they could EASILY have had Harry winning the Quidditch cup in about a ten-second bit at the end of Azkhaban, but they flubbed that part.

I guess I never caught this. Well, it's really about a few small things that was forced into the movie that had no business being there. Barty Crouch Jr. was not around at the beginning. They completely and utterly gave away the secret bad guy that was supposed to be the big reveal at the beginning of the movie. Whoops! Also, there was absolutely no reason to put Wormtail on the marauder's map, and telegraph that as well. Completely undermined the fact that he was supposed to be dead, and we are forced to accept that Harry is just to thick to think about it that much and shrugs it off as nothing.
I am not excited with this at all. So they're never going to show quidditch in any movie huh? And just looking at Umbridge's picture you could see they're gonna screw it up. She looks like a nice grandma, not toad lady. :-/
The last movie was over 3 hours right? I still felt they left a lot out. This movie only being a little over 2 hours long worries me. Good thing for the first time I don't have very high hopes for one of their movies so I won't be disappointed this time. I'll go see this anyway...
I can EASILY forgive the looks aspect immediately if she has the saccharin sweet, completely evil personality of the book. If they pull off her smile while being evil to the core, I will be happy.
They have her down right now as to dress and mannerisms from the trailers, and looks...meh, Hermoine doesn't look like Hermoine from the books. And I don't care.

Hermione looking decent makes up for Cho Chang being ugly. And Ginny doesn't look all that great either so the 6th movie just won't be the same. :-/ Looks are important to me, but you're right...if she can pull that stuff off and not be as bad as I think the new Dumbledore is, I would be okay with it. I'm still not expecting anything from this movie so I won't be disappointed like before...fricken' 2:18 for one of the longest books? Ugh...
you need to see Transformers NOW before it gets demoted to smaller screens arthur. That gives you maybe one week - trust me, if any movie EVER should be seen on a ginormous screen, it's Transformers.
From my perspective, this was the best movie...most true to the book (surprising with all the cuts that were needed) since the first one. Many lines were directly from the text, and that was fantastic. Being the first showing, the theatre was fairly rowdy and a well timed audience line of "you suck dolores" got a huge laugh and applause. Speaking of, she was pretty good...didn't look the part so much but really played it up. They were lose with the decrees, but her attitude really hit the mark (as well as her little cough). Could have been a bit more to her, but that was I think a result of cutting some of the things that made her evil in the book (banning harry for life from quidditch) and not on her portrayal of the character.
I wish it were about 20 minutes longer to add certain scenes I'll mention in spoilers. Some things were changed as to who said them, when they happened or how they happened. Some were changed outright, but overall the essence of the book remained. Much more so than say the third movie. A few lines/scenes WERE included that my wife and I were wondering about after re-reading the book that could have easily been cut but as we are anticipating, will play huge in book 7 so remained.
The added things were well done to maintain the feel of the book, even though they didn't happen in the book. Two slaps were AWESOME, both. A line from Harry in the forest was something that I kept waiting for in the book, but never came although the direct FEEL of the line was definitely in the book.
Kreacher was in very small, but was pretty creepy. Bellatrix was perfect (Helena Bonham Carter) but not enough screen time for her...she did baby talk to harry which was great.
For the second time in as many movies, Neville was a stand-in for Dobby's role in the book.
This director was very good...I liked his style very much. I know he is doing the 6th book and I think the 7th...this is good. The newspaper parts were well done.
Some flashbacks were interesting, seeing the little boy roundheaded harry was cool.
Spoilers (mostly complaints)
Grawp was far too cute...I didn't like the parts with him so much and I was really expecting to. He wasn't terrifying as in the book, and Herme wasn't scared of him. I felt that just wasn't handled so well.
Cuts in general made it probably hard to follow for those who have never read the books. Dunno though, as I have, but I get the feeling it might have been a little rapid on things going on.
The opening was nice, but it missed the element of Harry talking trash to Dudders, which is something I always liked about this book...I felt it needed it.
None of the injuries to the kids happened (and no frigging baby head deatheater!!!!) so it looked more like the adults of the Order really saved the day instead of having the feeling that the kids really put up a fight to the death and survived, as it seemed in the book.
It is avada kedavra bellatrix uses on Sirius, which is NOT from the book...however I think they wanted to be clear that he is dead. They also didn't touch enough on Harry's pain and confusion of him being dead. They DID talk about the voices behind the curtain, so JK must really feel that important.
Harry hears the prophecy...he actually HANDS IT TO MALFOY which I did not like, and Malfoy breaks it. He sees Snapes worst memory while in his mind, not in the pensieve, Voldy tells harry about crucio instead of Bellatrix, etc. Things like that are altered, but in the end it really didn't affect the tone or feel or result of the movie vs. the book.
One thing I hated and was very sad about (other than the babyhead deatheater and no brain tentacles on ron, almost dead hermoine, broken ankle ginny and broken nose neville) was they bypassed the Rita Skeeter part of the book which I absolutely loved. Bringing her back and using her as a turning point was great in that book, IMO. Instead, in the movie the change of heart of the populace was reflected in Shamus saying he believed Harry after the Prophet reported on the escape of the 10 deatheaters from Azkaban.
Oh, and although Dumbledore's escape from his office was pretty awesome visually, I thought in the book he was much more of a badass and smartass. That's pretty picky of me though.
And the kiss...well, it was sure a lot more heavy than I thought...you go harry. The scene right after was pretty much right from the book and the audience was laughing and clapping during it. They were awesome in that scene and it really showed the strong bond of friendship between the three.
No firenzi and the centaurs were introduced in a roundabout way in the newspaper, and weren't the goal of Hermoine with Umbridge...Grawp was...but in the end it played out the same (mostly).
All in all, I was really surprised at how much they powerpacked into 2:18 from a 900 page book. Some things I really loved were cut but it had to be done.
I personally loved this one, and it isn't my favorite book. My order of favorites from the books thus far is 6, 3, 1, 5, 4, 2. This may be my favorite movie though...I'll have to see it again to be sure.
yea I liked it... I dont remember much of the book since I haven't read it since it came out... but I too wish it would have been AT LEAST 20 minutes more
