I thought teams couldn't talk to coaches who were still coaching this season?

If this is true, my opinion of Rivera has most certainly gone down. He ought to be focusing on his season right now, not what he's going to do after it's over.

I think the new NFL rules state it is the team's discretion if they are on an off week. I could be wrong.

On bye week you can talk to coaches but not sign contracts.

I think it is a pretty stupid new rule, for the reasons Jason outlines.

Team has to give permission though, so if the Bears had issue with it they could say no.

they have till Saturday, but after that have to wait till that team is eliminated

Used to be the case. Now teams can talk to playoff teams during the FIRST week of the playoffs. Riviera would be offlimits after Friday.

they specifically did it because Weis and Crennel were consistently passed over because nobody wanted to wait till Feb

Graves:

Going to Chicago tommorrow to talk to Rivera
Sherman will be in town Thursday
Finalizing slots on Fri and Sat for "candidates"
Going to Indy on Sunday to talk to Caldwell
Un-named others on Mon and Tues

Sounds like there will be more names added to the list

No real preference for offense or defense background- but will want to understand the coach's vision for the other side of the ball

noted that they want assistants who can develop, teach and motivate. Cant tolerate mediocrity (which sure sounded like a swipe at certain departed assistants)

If the Cards are going TO Chicago, I feel a little better about it. I still don't really care for the implication of thinking past this season on Rivera's part, though.

I also heard this morning that the NFL is providing DVD interviews with a number of coaching candidates. Michael Bidwill stated that he and RG had reviewed about two dozen of them.

That would be stuupid on his part considering it would be career enhancement. He can interview for a job and still easily concentrate on the task at hand. I mena heck they dont even know what team to prepare for yet. So itsjust the basics this week.

I am curious about something--

I am guessing that in announcing the names, the Cards not only got permission from the team, but also talked to the candidate and confirmed interest in the job

I dont think you would announce -- "Cam Cameron is on our list" only 12 hours later have Cameron tell you no thanks.

You are correct. Coaches are given the opportunity to make a 45 minute DVD of themselves talking about their ideals and so on. The NFL then makes these available to any team that wants to look at them.

It is sort of like a monster.com type resume that multiple companies can look at but only in video format.

Around 4pm ET, John Clayton reported that the Cardinals were also interested in a guy named (I think it was) Jim Bates, Cam Cameron and one other guy.

He also conjectured that Chow had the inside track "because he and Mr. B were good friends."

About a half-hour later on NFL Network, Rod Graves surfaced for some direct Q & A on Cardinals Cam and only confirmed the original 4 dudes (Chow, Rivera, Caldwell and Sherman). Responding to a question about whether they could interview Chow since his contract option was retained along with Fisher, Rod indicated that he could interview Norm and left the impression that he had the Titans' permission to do so.

I get the feeling that things are really, really fluid.

Question for Skkorp, Ian and Bright Eyes - From Rod's apparent willingness to be more open and communicative, do you get the feeling that the doors to Cardinals HQ will re-open for ASFN staffers now that DG has departed and a new era is about to begin?

Crossing my fingers for Jim Caldwell . . .

Being from the Indy area, do you have any insight into him that you can share? I think most people think Manning needs very little coaching at this point in his career. Why should we hire him?

He was pretty unspectacular at Wake Forest (26-63 in eight seasons) but then again so was Jim Fassel in Utah yet he later took a team to the Super Bowl.

I am really starting to get behind the idea of Jim Johnson the Eagles DC to at least be interviewed. He is old but he continully gets young players to bust their fannies for him. This go round he isn't even on the list????

Id be happy with Rivera or Sherman.

I don't see us going defense but in my mind...

Proven Record guy = Mike Sherman
Offensive Rising Star = Cam Cameron
Defensive Rising Star = Ron Rivera

I am leaning toward Mike Sherman at this point. Other than the GM stuff, I can't find any negatives on Sherman. He is an offensive coach that has specialized on the oline.

I am not very high on Clancy right now...it would be nice to see a defensive guy come in and make our defense dominant while allowing a proven OC to run with the talent on offense.
