He will have his choice of NFL jobs this year.

That is something else, why would he take the ASU job for $2.5 mil when he can wait out an NFL job for double that money in a few weeks? Keep in mind that just because Michael Crow is allegedly in Tennessee does not mean the candidate is there. Sean Miller met with UA originally in Santa Fe. Rich Rod never stepped foot in Tucson before he had already signed the contract and Byrne was not foolish enough to be seen at his front door in Michigan.

yeah... after what has been an absolute train wreck, I don't buy Fisher at all... Even in the wildest dreams, I can't think of a Scerenio where Fisher comes to ASU, UNLESS he really is done coaching in the NFL and agrees to a crazy buyout if he does take the job and then bolts two years later...

But that begs the question - wasn't nepotism in the staff one of the reasons ASU fans soured on the Erickson regime?

I'm not sure. But if you get the coach you want, nepotism become less of a factor. DE not being able to win was the big factor IMO.

Since we're speculating about this Tennessee thing - how about Phil Fulmer? Or Oxford is pretty close to Memphis as well if you want Houston Nutt? Dave Mac is also there, no?

Jeff Fisher doesn't interest me at all unless he brings in a super staff of West Coast recruiters which seems unlikely at this point. Adrian Klemm is headed to UCLA I think I heard. All the options are exhausted at this point, just bring in English and have him retain Mazzone and Broussard and be done with it.

How about hiring from within. Does Mazzone get it done?

I never thought June Jones would start to sound good.

My speculation, and this is pure speculation alone; this "coach in Tennessee not named Wilcox" is Phil Fulmer, who is all but begging to get a second chance at the coaching ranks.

Granted, his hiring would be met with as much excitement as the near Jones hire, but I have a feeling that may be the direction they're going.

I wouldn't think they honestly believe Fisher would come to Tempe at 2.5 million per, when he can just wait a few weeks and get a job with Miami, Dallas (potentially), Kansas City, or any number of NFL jobs which may pay him a fair amount more.

I haven't read all of the posts on here, but have you guys seriously not started a "What post # will we be on before a HC is announced?" pool?!?!

I'll take Post #905.

(As an aside, I'm a UA alum/fan, but definitely in the "it will be better for everyone if both teams are consistently competitive" mold -- so I hope you can salvage this botched situation by getting a good coach at the end of the day).

I agree. A rivalry benefits from two competitive teams going at it, although basketball is where the UofA has exceled.

Some recent development. Josh McDaniels has been reported to be 'very interested' in the ASU job. Not exactly sure how that would work out...

Nor do I. However, he is at least young enough to build a program. The assistant coaches he hires or keeps would be key.

Way earlier. I say #839.

Young is better than old. I'm not impressed by him, but his personality may work in college. However, is it common that an NFL coach translates into a good recruiter?

As a UofA alum, I would love that hire. Btw, looks like Mazzone and Brousard are headed to UCLA. Those are huge loses if true. Recruiting is going to take a big hit.

If ASU doesn't hire someone within the next couple days, it looks very probable that Broussard will go to UCLA, and Mazzone will be going to A&M.

Also:

Arizona State officials will apparently talk with Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple

Losing Brousard is big. Mazzone - not so much
But how realistic is it that the new coach would agree to take on Broussard and Mazzone anyways? The problem with this search is that ASU people think they can just plug in any head coach in Erickson's spot, get a defensive coordinator, and all of a sudden start winning big. In reality the program (and after this debacle likely the atheltic department as a whole) need a huge facelift and culture change.

Mark Whipple sounds like the sort of candidate ASU might be looking for, with local ties and head coaching experience not to mention coaching experience in the pros.

If I'm an ASU fan, the only thing more exciting than the guy who has electrified the Rams offense would be the guy coaching up the Browns QBs!!

Keeping the recruiting coordinator - that is someone I would think they would want to keep around, unless they are resigned to losing the class.

Per Doug Haller:

Talked briefly with ASU receivers coach Steve Broussard about UCLA reports. "That's news to me," he said. (Doesn't mean it won't happen.)

I think he's just waiting to see who ASU will hire as HC.
