*clips*

Speaking about his future for the first time, Marion confirmed our earlier report that he ''definitely'' would like a contract extension and will have agent Dan Fegan ask the Heat for one this summer -- even though Miami's seemingly in no position to do that because it wants big salary-cap space in 2009. With few teams having cap space, Marion is not expected to opt out of the last year of his deal worth $17.4 million -- though he won't say for sure.

Marion, 29, said he wants a commitment from the Heat this summer because ``I've been in the league so long now and I just need that security. Everybody wants that.''

Hey shaun, you already have financial security after the 40-50 mil you collected over the last few years, how many kids do you have to feed? Tell you what, opt out of that contract, and I'm sure steve kerr will give you a multiyear vet min contract to get you the security that you really need!

its not just the money u know...

i bet, I think.... he will take a 14~15 million per year contract.
With his numbers and productivity and other players getting paid more... he deserves that.

When he said security, I think he meant he wants to be "tied up" to a team or to a contract long enough that he knows he will get playing time and a "home" per say..

I'm almost starting to feel sorry for Marion. It's gradually dawning on him what a colossal error of judgment he has made.

You feel sorry for him for being a narrow-minded fool? 95% of basketball fans realized how stupid his complaints were the last few years, see bill simmons column yesterday.

What was Marions fault besides a little whining? The Suns been looking to deal him for years and finally got a deal to go through and Marion was ok with it.

Agreed. I still really like Marion as a player. He was drafted as a Sun and set a ton of records, but I can't help feeling bad for him. His childish ploy to get attention on a team where he was the third best player, really came back to haunt him.

I've been saying for well over a year now (if not longer) that Marion wasn't likely to opt out. Theres almost no chance (though you can't account for idiotic GMs) that Marion would opt out and be able to get a bigger deal, especially since his athleticism will be declining over the life of his next deal.

Resigning Marion is probably a smart move for Miami too. Mario-Wade-Beasley/Rose is a nice core, especially in the East. Haslem is an above average PF and a nice piece too. If they get Rose, they'll have a nice 4, and need to find a center (as well as develop some depth). Unfortunately for them, the 2008 Free Agent class is EXTREMELY weak unless they can luck into a restricted free agent opting out.

Elton Brand for instance has an early termination option, would he leave LA? The west is super deep and with Golden State and Portland having high picks, it could be even tougher next year. Maybe Brand will decide he's got a better chance in the East. If Miami got him (obviously, this is a BIG TIME long shot), the lineup of:

5. Brand
4. Haslem
3. Marion
2. Wade
1. Rose

Is definitely out of the 1st round of the playoffs in the East, and possibly into the Conference finals.

Yeah I want to be haunted like that, be forced to take a player option for 17.4 mil next year to PLAY. Please someone in the NBA haunt me, HAHAHA!

It's not his fault that no team with him as a max player cap eater could ever win a championship, indeed. But he is to blame to not realize that his value to a championship team is no more than say 11mil per, and to then whine about the others did realize that fact!

They can't retain Marion for anything close to his current salary and still make a maximum offer to Brand.

Right, I'm not imagining they would keep Marion on his same deal. That is, I'd imagine they'd allow him to stay on it for next year, then have a cheaper (but longer deal which gives him the security he wants) deal after that. Like I said, Brand is beyond a long shot, they'll probably have to try to draft a big next year or this year if they don't take Rose or Beasely.

There are serviceable bigs out there, but certainly no stars. But in the East a serviceable big with Marion-Wade-Haslem-Rose/Beasely would probably be alright.

there's no way Riles wants to get locked into a deal with a mental midget like Marion. He's there to dunk a bunch and try and get people excited and more importantly, to clear cap space a year earlier than Shaq.

Um, have you seen Elton Brand play? That guy is a freakin' stud. Charles Barkley was a Hall of Fame PF at 6'4'', for some players, height doesn't matter.

it does if he's playing C. That team also has very little perimeter shooting, if any. It's really not a very well constructed team IMO.

Let me introduce you to this thing called the Eastern Conference where the Atlanta Hawks make the playoffs. I'm saying, a team like that (not that exact team per say) is certainly better than a lot of the junk in the East and could get hot/do well.

Either way, its silly to argue over something thats likely not happening. My point was, the Free Agent class is very weak barring some guys using their ETO's, Brand would probably be the best player who could do that.

He's no shot at all unless Marion opts out or Brand decides to accept half of his market value. The Heat don't have enough room under the cap to offer anyone a maximum deal as long as Marion is on the books.

It'll be interesting to see how the Marion saga unfolds, and to see if there really is anyone dumb enough to pay what he's going to be looking for.

Riles knew this was going to happen the whole time. Either marion opts and they get another lottery pick next year, or he stays and they can judge how well their team is by trying to get into the playoffs next year.
