You DO realize that the market was pretty much set for CBs when Oakland got a 2ND AND A 3RD for Buchanon - an INFERIOR CB to Surtain - right? So you're willing to sacrifice the future of this team for a RB with question marks AND will be a FA and a CB about to be 30 - and ALSO a FA.
You want to mortgage the future for one or two years - sorry - we ain't the Skins - we don't make stupid trades anymore - we'r ebuildsing for the long haul.
And tell me - how did we not manage our cap well this offseason? We spent a ton on FAs to upgrade the team considerably - still have money left over to extend Quan and STILL are in talks for both of those players.
Seriously - some of you guys will just bitch and moan to bitch and moan.
Not necessarily, Buchanon has played 3 years on his 5 year rookie contract so they were trading a guy signed for 2 more years, at base salaries of only 700 and 800K. That's one reason why the Raiders got 2 picks for Buchanon, he has a VERY cap friendly deal.
Surtain has one year left and counts 8.4 million on Miami's cap, so they are trying to trade him because of caphit, not performance, that's why they haven't gotten market value offered. I read an article today in the Sun Sentinel that said the deal with KC is less likely now because the Buchanon deal confirms Miami is right in demanding no less than a 2nd rounder for Surtain. Basically said if Oakland can get a 2 and a 3, no way Miami will take less than a 2. KC has been offering a 4 because they don't have a 3.
So if the Cards really want Surtain either offer the 2, you're making an offer KC has been unwilling to make for a month. If Miami now expects to get 2 picks for a guy who will be 29 in a few months and who they don't want to keep, they're crazy.
I assume SunCard meant that by releasing Thompson when we did, we took a caphit this year that we didn't have to take if we waited until June to cut him. If you're trying to scrounge caproom to sign Boldin and maybe fit a Surtain in, that wasted caproom might be important. If you're not, it may be wiser to save caproom NEXT year, which is essentially what we did. But next year the cap is expected to go up again so I don't think it's wrong to suggest we mishandled the cap by letting Ray go now.
