Just heard from a friend (from Buffalo sports radio) that the Cardinals and Bills have agreed in principle to a trade for LJ Shelton and Travis Henry pending physicals.

I have no idea if draft choices where included or if the Cardinals plan on re-doing Henrys contract.

This is the first time that this person has actually given me any information like this so I don't know if they are just pulling my leg. I apologise in advance if this news turns out to be bunk.

Good, Cards trade a player who they don't want and who doesn't want to be in Arizona to the Bills for a player they don't want and who doesn't want to be in Buffalo. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Shelton was the second player drafted by the Cardinals in 1999 (#21 overall) in the first round. (Boston was the first player drafted in '99 by the Cards.)

Travis Henry was the third player drafted in '01 by the Bills in the second round.

Won't we have to wait until the start of free agency before any trade can be finalized? I thought no movement could be done until March 2nd or something like that? Anyone know for sure?

IF this trade is for real I hope before they make it official we are able to get an extension on Henry's contract, like maybe another 2 - 3 years on top of what he already has.

That's why it's a trade that's a agreed upon "in principle."

I gotta tell ya, I'm really disappointed to see Shelton go. I'd rather have him than Henry at this point. The one offseason it seems that RBs are growing on trees and we gotta go trade for one. Ugh.

But, that aside, I think this is one of the most equitable trades I've ever seen in football. Henry is a helluva back--I think he'll tear it up here. I'm excited to have him. The Bills are getting one heck of a football player, too. He'll be missed.

I've always thought this was a done deal since day one.
I also think Hovan is a done deal.

I also think it still makes sense to pick up a back in the draft if one is available in round 3 or 4, using the "Best Player Available" approach.

At least the Cards won't spend the house on Shaun Alexander and can add quality players at positions they have a need -- like a QB, CB, DT, and offensive line.

I would still hope to get a speed back in the draft (ie: late first day, second day).

This also frees us from "being forced" to take a back early in the draft.

You can bet I'll be looking to pick up Henry on my fantasy football team this season. Good thing I'm the only person in my league that follows the Cardinals.

That is crucial IMO. If Henry only plays here one year and then leaves via FA then the trade becomes terrible for us.

That said, I like the trade. We fill a big position of need with a proven NFL RB and get rid of a guy who doesn't want to be here.

If true, I hope we go defense with our first round pick.

If this is true, good luck to LJ. At least were getting a rb that won't cost us that much. I sure hope the Cardinals didn't give up any picks to the Bills.

Bidwill is paying out the butt on this one.... gave Shelton a huge bonus not even 2 seasons ago now is going to have to pony up bonus money for Henry.

Buffalo is getting a good deal

So are the Cards if it was unlikely that Shelton wanted to stay or was going to start. At least they are getting something for their player in that situation.

Look for Derrick Johnson or Pac Man Jones. And Alex Smith is a viable choice.

I haven't spent a lot of time on the Henry threads so what kind of runner is he that we would still need a "speed" back?

Henry is power runner that has enough speed to get to the outside.

Isn't that just like Shipp or does Henry have more Home Run potential? (No steroid jokes please.)

I hope this is true. I really like how this organization is beginning to become proactive. Dennis Green is the man.

I like Henry, but I am with other posters on here. With a huge RB draft class and a ton of free agents why are we trading a good LT at a good price when LT are so valuable ? I would rather have a high second and sign Lamont Jordan or if we wait another month I bet the Bills would take a third next year. I will be extremly pissed to watch Cement back there missing key blocks again.

Also will anyone give us anything for Raynoch ?? Maybe a 5th or a 4th if a team is desperate ? What about AC maybe a 6th or 7th ?

Hope Henry has some speed. Cards already have Shipp and Hambrick, power backs.

Henry is proburbly a bit quicker than Shipp. But Shipp and Henry are different types of runners even if they are tagged as 'power backs'.

If true, it is a great start to free-agency

I don't know what was wrong with our underachieving line the last years but finally someone like Green is saying screw it and lets just get some new guys in here and stop trying to make a group of guys play as a unit when obviously they can't. I wish L.J. the best, but he wasn't part of the solution in Green's mind and Henry would be a welcomed addition after the play of our backs of late (though, I think Shipp still has a role in this team).
