Everything was working for Blaine Gabbert this week. He’d been in the offense for six months, but had put no film of what he likes to do. Expectations were exceptionally low on a team with no future against a middling opponent.

Blaine Gabbert lead the Cardinals into Houston territory exactly twice — and zero times in the second half. Those drives resulted in zero points. After the Arizona Cardinals took the lead with 4:48 in the third quarter, Gabbert was 9 for 16 for 100 yards (6.25 YPA), 2 INTs and a meaningless 20 yard completion to end the game.

As predicted, whenever the Cards faced a tough third down, Gabbert bravely chose a completion with no chance of conversion rather than attempt a pass that could create a first down. If Blaine Gabbert is the future for the Arizona Cardinals, the future is bleak indeed.

Budda Baker - The rookie from Washington was the biggest bright spot of the game. He plays with reckless abandon that you love to see. This kid has a bright future.

Jared Veldheer - Without much help from the tight end, Veldheer was effective in both run and pass blocking.

Ricky Seals-Jones - The rookie from Texas A&M made the most of his 8 snaps, with 3 receptions on 5 targets and 2 TDs.

Blaine Gabbert - The NFL now has 70 snaps of Gabbert in the Cards offense, and he’s as likely to be as effective going forward as Adrian Peterson has been. Gabbert is 28 years old; he’s 9-32 as a starter. He’s just good enough to get you beat.

Tyrann Mathieu - Every time Paul Calvisi asks if the Badger is back, I want to drive a pencil through my ear. Over the Cap shows Mathieu having a $14.1 million salary cap number next season. He looks merely adequate in all phases of the game right now. He played 100% of the defensive snaps this week; it’s possible he’s being over-used.

James Bettcher - Tom Savage’s career passer rating is 68.5. Yesterday his passer rating was 97.1. The Texans are averaging 26.7 ppg (including games with Deshaun Watson), the Cards allowed 31 points. The Cards opening game plan inexplicably called for soft zones and Patrick Peterson covering people other than DeAndre Hopkins. Savage was allowed to become comfortable and get into a rhythm.

I concur that Gabbert is probably not a starter but he sure the hell was not a goat to prove that point... every damn guy on the OL was a goat including Veldheer in my opinion

Still don't understand why there weren't more blitzes as when they did, Savage made mistakes..

Bucannon did some good stuff, particularly against the run, in the first half. I had him on my list as a goat for a while. He was definitely bad. His coverage on that TD made me wonder — again — why people insist that he could be Kam Chancellor if only he were allowed to play safety.

Typical. Way overpaid and did Reddick even play?

He played about 15 snaps. I saw him actively engage an RT in pass rush situation and that effectively ended the play for him.

If Keim gets fired in three years, it will be because first-round picks continued to non-perform. Nkeimdiche and Reddick were non-entities, and Humphries is on IR. Humphries has ended one season without taking a snap and two seasons on IR.

You were crapping on Gabbert all week and now you are purposefully making his performance sound worse than it was just to pat yourself on the back. Cherry picked stats about his performance after half time aren't fooling anyone. We all saw the dropped balls and complete o-line ineptitude that hampered his ability to make plays. Once the Cardinals were dug in a hole (because of BA's bone headed decisions), Gabbert did make some poor throws. He doesn't belong in the GOATS list by a long shot.

Because James Bettcher does not have the ability to make proper adjustments.

As far as goats go, PP has played better. He got smoked badly a couple of times.

I agree. While Gabbert was far from perfect, he doesn't deserve to be a Goat. Especially when there were far more disappointing players/Units out there:

Every WR other than Fitz
BA and his terrible 4th and 1 call
The OL opening zero holes for Peterson
The DL getting no pressure and unable to stop the run

I said it at the time and I will say it again. The front office made a bad decision moving Valdeer from the left side. The kid should have been put at RT and we might have pulled out a couple of wins that were close.

Hard to argue with the Heroes. They all made the most of the opportunities they were given.

In regards to the Goats.

I agree on Mathieu...he is meh. I think his future should be as a 70% snap nickel CB. I don't know that Arizona will have the fortitude to make that tough call.

My feelings in regards to Bettcher are well known. You can pencil him in here every week.

While Gabbert did not play very well, I do feel like he met the reasonable expectations that teams have for backups. HE came in and executed the game plan well up until he had to make situational football plays. Once those came (red zone, third down, dictated throwing situations) he was exposed for the limited player that he is. Personally, I might have put Adrian Peterson or Haason Reddick as a goat over him, because I feel they failed to meet expectations at a higher level. Hell, you can add Nelson and Brown to that list as well.

So, in regards to Bucannon, I disagree with your wonderment from this perspective. Bucannon was drafted to be a Kam Chancellor type S. We changed him into an ILB to fill the hole Daryl Washington left. I can easily say that Bucannon has shown that he is a bad base ILB. I don't know what he could be as a base SS. Why is it odd for me to wonder if he could be more successful playing the position that he was originally drafted to play. Maybe he would suck less than he does now?

Oh, and Reddick sure seems to be running down that same career path. He might end up being the final nail in Keim's coffin. There are 14 players drafted after him IN THE FIRST ROUND who have made more of an impact than he has, 7 of which could be viewed as LBs. I think the argument can be made he is hot trash as an edge rusher...and at best develops into a KJ Wright level LB. Another reason to have little faith in Keim.

I think Chandler Jones, in retrospect, probably was more deserving of being a goat. Very odd he couldn’t close the deal even once.

Playing ILB is easier than playing safety. He’s an average ILB; I see no reason to think he’d be an above average safety. He’s not good in coverage, and he’s not trusted to carry TEs down the field.

The Reddick draft pick looks very, very bad right now. I don’t have time to read Somers’ weekly chats anymore... I wonder what other fans are saying about him?

Reddick would have been a solid second round pick and belongs in the NFL but he is no first rounder from what I have seen so far... at least in Bettcher's defense

Gabbert wasn't a hero yesterday, but he most certainly was not a goat. And FWIW, I believe he led a scoring drive into Texans territory in the 3rd quarter...it was Seals-Jones 2nd touchdown catch.

K9, I thought you would at least admit you nibbled on a little crow this week because Gabbert earned great praise from BA and SK and LF. He had the 3rd highest game QBR of the Cardinals' season, despite no running game and some very timely drops like the easy out pass to J.J. Nelson that would have moved the chains prior to BA's decision to go for it. Plus, you list TE Ricky Seals-Jones as a hero...who got him the ball?

Gabbert hadn't taken a snap in a live football game(by live I mean not pre-season) in nearly a year. Keeping that in mind, I thought he did well. Did I like his constant dumping? No but as I said, the guy was as rusty as an old bike chain. And, I, for the life of me cannot understand why BA refuses, REFUSES to gameplan to his strengths. Did we run any rollouts? Bootlegs? He is the most mobile QB we've had since Plummer so you gameplan for him, not try to get him to acquiesce to what he's not.

That drive started on the ARZ 49. Don't know if you really wanna get excited about that one.

Actually he was asked by the moderator of the board to do a weekly article, so he is volunteering to do this.

He doesn't like Gabbert, and defends his stance. He even brings some stats, and examples.

There are other posters who hate certain players, and provide little, if no, reason for it.

I read people bashing Patrick Peterson on this board, and with little to no reason beyond personal speculation.

Pretty safe to say that bashing Peterson game is finding illogical babble far beyond calling out Blaine Gabbert.

Don't think Gabbert was a goat either, and if there was a reason for a goat in concerns to the passing game, it would be the receivers not named Larry Fitzgerald, or Seals-Jones
